"Who's there?" She wondered aloud. "No one." Heero muttered as he continued walking,
leaving her behind. "I could have sworn I heard footsteps." She
ran down the few stairs to catch up to him. "You're paranoid." "You know, a lot of people probably died in here.
This place could be crawling with ghosts or even zombies." "I don't believe in ghost or zombies." "When you reach the bottom of the stairs, you'll
be in the treatment area of the building." Relena stated out
of nowhere, causing Serena to scream in surprise. "Easy dumpling, it's just us." Seiya laughed
and the gentle sound calmed her. "What are we going to do down here?" Serena
wondered and walked even closer to Heero. "You'll see when you get there." Seiya assured.
They finally stepped off the last stair. Heero's flashlight roamed
about the vas room. "You want to go three doors down and enter
the door on your left." The two did as instructed. "This
room was where shock therapy took place." "Eeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkk!!!!!" Serena jumped into
Heero's arm, causing the flashlight to drop to the floor. "Serena, what's wrong?" Seiya asked concernly.
"Rats!" Serena screamed and buried her face
in Heero's strong shoulder. "There's a ton of them." She
cried clutching the Gundam pilot closer. Heero glanced down at the
rats. Only they weren't rats, they were baby mice. Without warning,
he released the blonde and she crashed on the floor roughly. "Ouch!
That wasn't very gentlemen like." She scolded as she stood and
rubbed her sore bottom. A loud whimper erupted from her throat as
she realized that she was admist the rodents. "That brings us to your first dare Serena."
Relena cooed. "You have to hold a mouse for a full minute."
"Heero, help her out." Seiya added nonchalantly. Without further encouragement. Heero picked up the nearest rodent by the tail. He then seized Serena's wrist and dropped it in her hand. Before she could pull away, he snatched her free hand and covered her gift to prevent it from escaping, or her dropping it. A blood curdling scream exploded from the Sailor Scout as she realized the size of the object in her hand. Heero didn't give her a baby mouse. He placed an adult rat in her hand. ********** "Did you hear something?" Duo asked and shined
his light down the hall that they were walking. "It was probably just an echo." Ami answered
and continued walking. "A echo?" Duo turned and jogged to catch up
with his teammate. "Don't forget, we just left a rotunda. The dome
probably caused someone's final words to bounce and carry into this
hall. What you just heard might have been the end of the sound waves
bouncing." "Yeah, that's what I thought." Duo tried to
sound as if he understood that. "Do you have an explanation for
everything?" "It comes from reading so much. You would be amazed
at how much one could learn if they took the time out to read."
"Sure." Duo ran his flashlight along the walls
of the hall. "How much further are we going to have to go?"
"Usually these halls aren't this long. It should
have been shorter so that the doctors could reach a patient in case
of emergencies. Then again, given the time period of this particular
structure, the doctors probably kept their patients tied to a bed
and only checked on them once a day." "Yeah, I was thinking the same thing." Duo
tapped the speakers near his ear. "Hey, are you guys still there,
or did Mrs. Book smart bore you to sleep?" "We're here Duo. It's just that we have no instructions
until you reach the end of the hall." "Well, can't you at least talk to us to keep us
company?" "Sounds like you have plenty of company."
Hilde laughed. "Besides, our silence is important to the whole
ideal of freaking you guys out." "Yeah, well, I think you're breaking that silence
thing." "I must be hanging around you too much. Okay, looks
like your near the end. When you get there, it's going to break into
three different halls. You want to go straight." "Again with the straight. Is this one just as long?"
Duo whined as they entered the area that Hilde spoke of. "That's cruel." "There's a dumbwaiter at the end of this hall."
Taiki spoke. "Whoa, you must be that Taiki guy Seiya was talking
about. I guess your name doesn't hold any truth." "That's no problem." Duo bragged as the dare
came into view. He placed his flashlight into his mouth and attempted
to slide open the metal door. The door was rusted from age and a little
rough to open. "Come on Duo, put some muscle into it." Hilde
joked. "Shut up Hilde. This damn door is rusted shut." Duo surrendered after trying a few minutes to open it. "Where's Heero when you need him?" "If you don't complete your appointed dare Duo,
you don't win." "Hey! How am I supposed to complete the dare when
I can't open the door to get in." "Try unlocking it." Ami offered and stepped
up to the door. She shined her light on the bottom part where a latch
was discovered. "Why didn't I think of that?" Duo wondered
aloud. "Because you're not Mr. Book smart." Taiki
entered. "Hey! How about showing a little sympathy? It's
not very bright here." "You or the room?" "Maybe we shouldn't do this Duo." Ami said
softly as she pushed a little on the metal elevator. "It might
not be all that sturdy." Under the light pressure, the metal
squeaked and bent easily. "This was used at one time to transport
food and garbage between floors. It might not be able to fully support
the weight of a person, let alone two." "Then we'll take turns." Duo suggested and
hopped into the small area. "You're seriously going to do this? What if it
gives out." "It'll be fine. Watch." Duo claimed and began
pulling at the ropes. The small metal box began to rise. "Oops,
wrong way. Where's the reverse on this thing?" He laughed at
his own mistake, then pulled the opposite rope. Ami peered down the
shaft. A sickening feeling overwhelmed her. The basement seemed so
far down, even though it was only two floors. Suddenly the dumbwaiter
stopped. "Duo are you okay?" Ami asked suddenly. There
was no answer. "Duo?!" "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just a little stuck. No problem."
He tugged at the ropes a little and finally became unstuck. He then
continued to the basement. Once the elevator stopped, Ami could hear
the rusted metal being pushed open. "Your turn." He called
and Ami pulled at the ropes to bring the box back up. Ami stared at the metal a moment. Something deep inside
her told her not to do this. That something would go wrong. What if
she got stuck and couldn't get out? What if the bottom gave out? "Come on Ami, you can do this. This is easy. Look,
I did it and I'm fine." The American called from the basement.
"It's not that far." Shaking a little, she climbed into
the metal elevator. As she grasped the ropes to start her descent,
the door slammed shut. She screamed a little out of surprise. "Are
you okay?" Duo called a little worried. "What happened?"
"I'm okay." Ami breathed and clutched the
ropes tighter. "The door just slammed shut." "Okay, then come on down. It'll be fine."
With Duo coaxing her, she pulled at the ropes. Her eyes were tightly
closed as the metal under her began to creaky even louder. "It's going to break." She realized and stopped
suddenly. "No it won't." Duo assured. "Look, it
supported me. I'm much heavier than you." Recognizing the facts,
she continued. All at once, the floor gave out. "Aaahhh!!!" Ami grabbed the ropes tightly
as the metal crashed against the ground below her. "Ami, are you okay?!" "I think so." She looked down to see Duo standing
under her. "Let go, I'll catch you." "But. . ." "It's not that far, I'll catch you." Ami held
tighter to the rope. "Trust me. I won't let you get hurt."
Sighing deeply, she released. She felt herself free fall for what
seemed like forever. As promised, Duo caught her. However, he didn't
expect such force on her falling and was knocked to the ground. The
two spilled out of the shaft and onto the hard floor where Duo hit
his head. "Are you guys okay?" Hilde blared over the
speakers. "Yeah, I'm fine." Duo commented and Ami climbed
off of him. "Me too." She answered. Duo tried to sit up,
but Ami pushed him back down. "Your head is bleeding Duo. Let
me look at it." "I'm fine. It's not like this is the first time
I ever bled." "You could have a concussion." Ami declared
and began to inspect his wound and eyes. "Look, I'm fine. My
head is a lot harder than you think." "How many fingers am I holding up?" "Two." "Can you follow my finger?" Ami asked and
waved it slowly from side to side. Duo easily kept up. "Look, I said I'm fine." "I don't want to do this any more." "What?!" "Duo, we should get you to a doctor." "I'M FINE!" Duo insisted. "No, I quit." Ami stood up. "Do you hear
me?" "Are you sure you want to?" Taiki asked. "Yes." "NO!" Duo scrambled to his feet. The sudden
movement caused a wave of lightheadedness. "Whoa!" He grabbed
onto Ami for support as he blinked a few times. "See, you do need a doctor." "I promise, I'll go to a doctor as soon as we win."
"No, I want out now!" Ami declared. "Well, you guys are done then." Hilde informed.
"Taiki is on his way to come and get you." "No! No, Hilde. You can't do that." "Duo, I already asked Relena. It only takes one
teammate to quit. Any ways, I think Ami's right. You need a doctor.
That floor is solid cement. Even your head can't beat cement."
"IT'S JUST A BUMP!" Duo yelled into the speaker
and became even more lightheaded and dizzy. He nearly fell over, if
Ami wasn't there to catch him. "Damn! There goes my prize."
