I'll Do Anything

Part 5

Heero leaned against the wall as he watched over Relena. She was giving yet another speech. In truth, it was because of these long speeches that Heero had learned to block out her voice. He wasn't concerned about what she was saying, but rather her stance.

Slowly his eyes loomed over the crowd listening to her. It was always the same group of people. One would think that a body would tire of hearing Relena. However these people didn't. Listening to her gave these people a relaxed piece of mind. His colbat eyes traced the crowd once more, then the surroundings. Finally they rested on Relena. But it wasn't her that he saw standing behind the podium talking.

The big violet eyes. The long auburn hair in a single braid. Heero blinked a few times and the image gave way to reality. All at once, his mind was filled with thoughts about Duo. He didn't know why he was suddenly thinking about the American. It had to do with Quatre and Trowa's wedding. Against his better judgment, he somehow managed to talk Relena into rescheduling her trip to Earth. He wanted to be there for Trowa, however deep down, he hoped Duo would show up at the last minute.

It had been so long since he seen his ex. He just wanted to know that Duo was fine and happy in his life without him. There were a few times when he was compelled to go see for himself, however, there was that one memory that kept him away. He knew where the American lived as well as the scrap yard of where he worked. Quatre conveniently allowed that information to seep out.

What surprised him was the fact that Quatre had said that Duo was still single. Who wouldn't want Duo? After all he was funny, energetic, kind, Heero could make a list a mile long, but didn't. It hurt too much to think about him. The Japanese bodyguard thought for sure that he had gotten over that part of his life. He had actually returned to normal and that's the way he stayed. That is until he saw someone with a long braid or violet eyes. When he did, he remembered that night with painful detail.

When Quatre actually went so far as to tell Heero how Duo was doing, it took all his will not to run from the room. Ever since, Heero was having a hard time trying not to thinking about him. He couldn't help but wonder why he wasn't seeing anyone. Was he between relationships? Did he ever think about him? Remember all the times that they had together. Did he remember that night? Did he have any regrets about it?

Presently, tears spilled from the icy colbat. Heero wiped them from his cheek and stared at the drops. He silently cursed himself. He was raised to be the Perfect Solider, and yet one person was able to destroy him like a poorly guarded base. Why do I still cry over this? He forced his tears away and focused on Relena. He couldn't help but wonder if proposing to her was the right thing. He was constantly having second thoughts. He didn't love her. He knew he didn't, but she loved him. She would never leave him. Heero didn't know when he developed the fear of being alone. Maybe it was because he was used to Duo always being with him. Now that he understood what it was like to be with someone, he didn't want to go back to Heero Yuy Perfect Solider. He wanted to be a person. A person with feelings and emotions toward others. A person unworthy of the affection of the only man he ever and could ever love.

"Earth to Heero!" Heero looked up at Relena who was sitting across from him snapping her fingers. "Hello? Are you alive? Some bodyguard. While you're zoning out, I could have been assassinated." She stared into his colbat eyes. "What's wrong? You have been acting funny since Quatre and Trowa came to visit." Heero stared at her a moment before answering.

"They're so happy together."

"Yeah, I know. It's like they were made for each other."

"Do you think we could ever be like that?" Relena couldn't help but gawk, she had never heard Heero ask such a question.

"I'm sure we could, if we work hard enough."

"Do you think they actually work at it?" Relena appeared confused. "I mean, for as long as I've known them, I've never once seen them argue."

"All couples argue Heero. If they didn't, that means that there's some feelings and thoughts that are being pushed aside. It's not healthy that way, since those repressed feelings and thoughts could sooner or later come back to cause more problems. . ." Heero had stopped listening after she said this. He thought about all the arguments that he and Duo had in the pass. Duo was always so blunt with how he felt and what he wanted. It was always Heero that hid everything from his partner. Silence broke through Heero's thoughts. It took him a second to realize that Relena stopped talking. She was presently staring at him.

"What?"

"You're thinking about him, aren't you?"

"Who?"

"Don't play games with me Heero Yuy. You know exactly who I'm talking about. . . Duo." She stood up and turned to leave. "I should have known." Heero sprang to his feet and blocked her path.

"Relena. ." She looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.

"Heero, if you want us to be truly happy, you're going to have to give up on him. He doesn't want you anymore. Can't you understand that? He left you!" The last three words tore at the Japanese's heart, but didn't show it. "He's already gotten over you. . .so why can't you get over him?" He didn't know what to tell her. He wanted to scream that he still loved Duo, but remained silent. "Heero, I love you more than life itself, but I refuse to marry a man who's heart I don't own." With that, she pulled off her ring and placed it in his hand. She then side stepped around him.

Buddy leapt into his owner's arms and began licking happily. Duo laughed and petted the puppy's head.

"Well, I'm glad someone missed me." Duo smiled and gently placed the dog on the floor. Quatre closed the door behind him as he entered.

"Are you sure it's okay that I stay here the night."

"Q, don't make me repeat myself." He walked over to the phone and pushed the button for his messages. Like clockworks, he then picked up the remote, turned on the TV, then headed into the kitchen.

"Hey Duo. . ." Hilde called cheerfully. "Just callin on my lunch break. I'm making sure you survived Quatre's look." She laughed. "Just give me a call when you get a chance. Bye."

"Don't have the chance." Duo snickered as he handed Quatre another beer, and erased the message. The second message was Hilde again. This time she sounded more concerned. "She'll stop by later tonight." Duo explained and erased that message as well.

"You ever thought about. . ."
"Been there, done that, turned the page. Next!" Quatre laughed and sat on the couch.

"It didn't work between you two?"

"Not a chance. A snowball had a better odds of surviving Hell."

"I actually had fun tonight." Quatre informed and glanced at the phone.

"Yeah? You really had that red head on your hooks. What'd you say to her to cause her to slap you?"

"I told her about Trowa."

"Well that was smart. She was actually kinda nice."

"She was pretty, but I'm an engaged man." Quatre smiled at the thought of his lover.

"Oh right, I forgot. Honestly does exist in some relationships."

"Would it be okay if. . ." The Arab looked at the phone again.

"Yeah, go ahead. Trowa's probably worried about you."

"Thanks." Quatre picked up the phone while Duo flipped through the channels. "Hi Kanissa. . .No. I'm at Duo's. He wanted me to stay the night with him instead of the hotel."

"Sisters can be a mother sometimes." Duo joked as he slumped next to Quatre. "Here, let me talk to her." Without waiting for an answer, he snatched the phone and moved to his chair. "Hey Nis! What's up? Do you know who this is?" Duo's grin widen. "Wow! You remembered. I always knew you wanted me. . . .OOOOHH. That might hurt, but I like pleasure spiked with pain." Quatre couldn't help but wonder what Kanissa was saying to him. "Hey, I'll be there next week. Maybe after hubby goes to bed, we could sneak off into the garden. . . .Hey, wait I was just. . . .Hi Tro-chan. . .NO! I wasn't harassing anyone. . .She's the one making naughty promises to me. . .Let's play a game. . . I'll give you one guess why I'm calling. If you guess wrong, I get to dye a very beautiful blonde head, ummm, purple." Duo laid back in his chair and continued talking. "You win. Soooo, how's the arrangements coming?. . .Oh? Has the sister from Hell gotten to you yet?"

Quatre waited patiently as Duo and Trowa exchanged small talk. He really wanted to hear the sound of the Latin's voice, but didn't want to seem rude. As if sensing his neglection, Buddy jumped onto the couch and laid next to the blonde. He then rolled over onto his back and waited for Quatre to give him another belly rub.

"Oooohhh. You wanted to talk to Quatre?" Duo said ten minutes later. He appeared to look and sound hurt. "You mean you didn't call to talk to me?. . . .But Tro-wa we've been carrying on for so long. You mean to tell me you never told Quatre about us? . . .I'm hurt. And here you are, calling me collect at one in the morning to talk about him! Are you cheating on me Trowa?" Quatre couldn't help but laugh as he imagined the look on Trowa's face at these words. "Well, fuck you Mr. Barton. See if I let you seduce me anymore. YOU CAN KEEP YOUR LITTLE WINNER YOU BIG LOSER!" Duo then hung up the phone.

"I can't believe you hung up on him." Quatre gaped at the American. Duo was definitely feeling like his old self. The phone began ringing. Duo coughed a couple of times, cleared his throat and hid his smile. He picked up on the fourth ring.

"Halo?" He answered with a thick Spanish accent. "No comprend!. . .Se, hablo espanglo." Duo's jaw dropped and he began to laugh in surprise as Trowa responded. "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? When did you learn Spanish? . . .Quatre?. .Well, he's a little busy right now. . .He's getting better acquainted with my roommate. . .Yeah, he moved in last week. It was either get a roommate, or be evicted. . . Buddy. . Yeah! He's hot. Long jet black hair, the kind you have to run your fingers through. Big pouting brown eyes to die for. If he wasn't my roommate, I'd jump him. . .I told you he's busy. . .Stroking Buddy. Those two hit if of real well. We even went clubbing. Didn't Quatre tell you?. . .And what's this? Ever since my sweet, innocent Quatre got with you he's become corrupt. . .Yeah, he's already drank two beers since he's got here. You turned him into a fish. Damnit I told you not to fuck him silly. Now you gone and warped his brain. . . I told you, he's having fun with Buddy. A little lower Q, that's his weak spot." Duo pointed downward. "Yeah, there you go, that drives him nuts. . .Will you at least wait until they're done? I'm sure Quatre likes to finish all his jobs. Speaking of which, don't you have a hand job to get to?" Quatre couldn't believe that this Duo was the same one that he woke up earlier. Before he could say any more to Trowa, Quatre snatched the phone.

"Trowa? I'm sorry. Look about what he was saying about Buddy. . ."

"He totally trusts you Quatre. He didn't believe a word I was saying." Duo explained at the same exact time as Trowa. Duo listened to Quatre's more calm and relaxed voice. Maybe it was just him, but he could have sworn that whenever Trowa and Quatre talked to each other, they used softer tones. He listened to his blonde friend. His voice was soothing Duo to the point of sleepiness. "He did? When?. . .why am I not surprised?. . .I better go. . ." Quatre said suddenly as he looked up at the clock. "Yes. .I should be home sometime tomorrow evening. . .Okay. I love you too Trowa. . .Goodnight." Quatre waited until the Latin hung up before doing the same.

"Is everything okay?" Duo asked suddenly sensing something was wrong.

"No, everything's fine." A smile curved the blonde's lips. "Wu Fei arrived today. Remember Novia?"

"Kanissa's daughter?"

"Yes. She seems to have fallen for our Preventer friend."

"Well, she's a little out of her league. Wu Fei prefers the older type. If they can't pass as his parent, then hit the road." The two friends laughed. Suddenly Duo stood and stretched. "And speaking of hitting things, I think we should hit the sack. We both have work tomorrow." Quatre stood and followed the American into the bedroom. "You can have the bed. I'll sleep on the couch."

"The bed looks big enough for both of us." Quatre observed. Duo just stared at him. "Or I can take the couch."

"I should have known."

"I feel bad about putting you out of your own bed."

"You're my guest Quatre. It's fine. The couch isn't all that uncomfortable." Quatre looked up at his violet eyed friend. "Fine! We can both sleep on the bed." He started and pushed back the covers. "Just remember, I'm not Trowa. I don't want to wake up with you kissing or hugging me."

"Okay." Quatre agreed and went to change for bed. Duo was preparing the covers when Buddy ran and jumped in the middle.

"Well, looks like Quatre's taking your place tonight Buddy." The dog barked at him. "Don't talk back to me. Get down." He pointed at the floor and the lab reluctantly obeyed. Duo slipped off his shirt and tossed it aimlessly to his right. He toed off his shoes and pulled off his socks and pants. He then climbed into bed and pulled the covers to his chin. Once he was comfortable, Buddy jumped on the bed again. "Buddy down!" Duo turned to look at him. "I mean it!" A small whimper erupted from the puppy.

"It's okay." Quatre said as he entered the room. "There's enough room for me." He turned off the lights and made his way to bed. A few minutes later, they were all comfortable. Each of the friends laid back to back. Buddy claimed the space behind their bent knees.

"Quatre?" Duo started suddenly.

"Yes Duo?"

"Thanks."

"For what?"

"Bringing me out of my depression."

"I'm glad I did."

"Me too. . .Goodnight."

"Goodnight Duo." Duo closed his eyes and recapped the day's events. "Quatre?"

"Mmm?"

"Did Trowa say 'I love you' before he hung up?"

"Mhmm."

"How long did it take for him to say it?"

"Four years."

"You waited all that time?"

"For some people it's not an easy thing to say. Especially if they never said it or been told it before."

"It didn't bother you that you were together that long and he never once said it?"

"No. He might not have been able to say it, but he showed it to me." Quatre laughed. "But after he did tell me that he loved me, he confessed to all the times he told me when I was asleep. Maybe he drove it into my subconscious and that's how I knew."

"Why does that sound like something he would do?"
