I'll Do Anything

Part 4

The annoying beeping wouldn't stop. Even the pillows couldn't prevent the sound from waking Duo. Frustrated, he threw the pillow toward the alarm clock. He must have missed, because it was still sounding. Not wanting to risk another, he buried his face as deeply into the soft materials and pulled his cover over his head. Still the beeping was heard.

"Damnit! That's what I get for setting it across the room." He looked toward the clock, then his dog. "Buddy! Go turn off the alarm. Go on boy. That's your new chew toy. Go on! Get the big bad alarm clock!" He tried to sound enthusiastic about the whole ordeal, but the dog wasn't buying it. It stared at the violet eyed owner as if he was crazy before laying back down. "Damn dog! What are you good for?"

"Maybe that's his way of telling you to get out of bed." Hilde suggested as the beeping stopped. Duo rolled onto his back and looked at her. "You're going to be late again."

"Who cares? I'll have a week off pretty soon. Maybe I'll be able to catch up on the latest clubs around here."
"You mean to tell me that you're still not going to Quatre's wedding?"

"Nope! But that doesn't mean I can't take advantage of the vacation Howard so wonderfully gave to me. I can use one."

"But what about Quatre?"

"I'll send him a gift. Maybe Buddy unless I can teach him to turn off the alarm." Duo muttered, and turned over to fall asleep.

"Don't you think this is a little selfish? I mean, you two are like brothers. Don't you think it would bother him that you didn't show up?"

"He'll have Trowa to comfort him. Besides, all his sisters will be there. With them around, he won't be able to talk to anyone else. He wouldn't even miss if I wasn't there."
"What about Trowa? Maybe he wants you there."
"Yeah, and maybe I can give birth to a child made of pure gold. Trowa will have Catherine, Wu Fei, and Hee-ro there for him. Now, if you would be so kind, to make sure you close the gate on your way out."

"But Duo, you have guest, it's rude to ignore them."

"I hardly consider you a guest. You practically live here and I'm thinking about evicting you because you're not keeping up on rent."

"I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the person sitting in your living room." Duo sat up straight. He didn't get many guests.

"It better not be who I think it is." Hilde nodded. "Damnit all to Hell!" He looked over at Buddy. "Why didn't you wake me up sooner?" He yelled at the dog. The lab jumped off the bed and disappeared in the hall. "I can't believe you let him in my house." Duo jumped out of bed and searched for clothes.

"It's only Quatre. I thought you might like to see him."

"No, you don't understand! He has this. . .this. . .look. . ." Duo stopped in front of Hilde. "Every time anyone looks at it, they just cave. I don't care if you think you're the toughest person in the world. You loose to this look. It should be labeled as lethal. Even Wu Fei and Trowa have been slayed by this look."

"Come on, I'm sure it's not that bad."

"You know why he's here? He's probably going to talk me into going to his wedding."

"What's so wrong about that?"

"If I know Quatre, everything. He's probably got this big plan in which he thinks he'll get me and Heero back together. And if the truth is known, this whole wedding thing is part of the plan. He's probably got Trowa and Wu Fei working with him." Hilde couldn't help but laugh. "It's not funny!" Duo demanded.

"You're being extremely paranoid. Look, just go talk to him."

"No. I'm not going in there."

"Why not?"

"Cause it only takes a second for the 'look' to work. If I go in there, I'm a dead man. Maybe I can sneak through the window." Duo climbed onto his bed and opened the window.

"Duo, don't do that."
"You don't understand."
"No, you don't understand. You're naked." Duo stopped dead in his tracks and looked down. She was right. He was butt naked. "If you go out like that, they'll arrest you for indecent exposure." Hilde chuckled as she watched him finish dressing. "Look, just go talk to him. Maybe his visit has nothing to do with the wedding."
"And maybe I'm the king of America."

"Duo?" It was too late, Quatre was standing on the threshold of his room. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt."

"You're not interrupting at all. Duo was just getting ready." Hilde said sweetly as she grabbed the American's hand and lead him toward the living room where they could all sit down and talk.

"I'm going to kill you." Duo whispered as she pushed him into one of the chairs. Quatre sat in his original spot on the couch, and Hilde joined him. No sooner had he sit down than Buddy ran up to him for attention.

"When did you get a dog Duo?" Quatre asked softly as he rubbed the puppy's head.

"If you want, you can have him." Duo muttered.

"Don't you like him?" The blonde asked looking up at his friend.

"His name is Buddy. . .Look, Quatre I have to go. I'm late for work."

"I'm sorry I must have come at a bad time."

"No, not at all." Hilde piped up. "Today's my day off. I'll go in for you Duo. That way, you and Quatre can catch up on lost time." She jumped to her feet.

"Hilde, I can't possibly ask you to give up your day off." Duo said through gritted teeth.

"It's no problem Duo. I'll just explain everything to Howard. He'll understand. You two have fun. Bye guys. See ya Buddy." She petted the dog's head as she headed toward the door.

"Bye Hilde, it was nice seeing you again." Quatre called and Hilde waved. A small silence descended the two friends. Buddy soon lost interest in the Arab and left the room as well.

"Perfect. Total privacy." Quatre stood up, his face was downcast and sorrowful.

"I'm sorry Duo. I feel as if my being here is upsetting you somehow." Duo's heart went out to his friend.

"It's not you Quatre. I'm just not having a good day. . .or life for that matter." Quatre looked up at the statement. "Please, I want you to stay. I haven't seen you in a while, and since Hilde so generously gave me the day off, why waste it?. . .So are you flying solo this time? Or is Trowa lurking pretty close, as if I don't already know the answer." Duo half asked, half commented. He knew that the love birds were partially inseparable.

"Actually, Trowa's at home. Since I've been so busy at work, he's pretty much been taking care of all the arrangements.

"Oh, well. . .this wedding should be interesting then." Duo snickered as he stood. "Do you want something to drink?"

"Yes. Thank you." Quatre answered politely. Somehow he had the feeling that Duo's ice was breaking. "Well, one of my sisters is helping him."

"That's good." Duo headed into the kitchen and opened the fridge door. "It won't be all that bad then. Which one is it?" Suddenly he realized that all he had to drink was beer.

"It's Kanissa." Quatre answered as Buddy reentered the room and padded over to the blonde.

"Isn't that the one that's so protective of you?" Duo asked as he rummaged through his drawers and cabinets. He thought for sure he had some kind of powder drink.

"Yes. . . Duo, are you okay in there?" Quatre leaned a little to try and see his braided friend.

"Yeah, I'm fine. . .it's just that. . ." Suddenly he found a jar of coffee. He didn't drink the stuff, but Hilde did. He silently thanked her and twisted off the cap. As he peered into the jar, he took back the grace and cursed her. It was empty. He couldn't help but wonder why anyone would keep an empty jar. Then again he was talking about Hilde. Frustrated, he appeared on the threshold of the kitchen. "All I have is beer." Duo apologized as he looked at the blonde. He knew the Arab rarely drank beer.

"It's fine." Quatre smiled.

"You're sure?" Duo couldn't believe his ears. "You want a beer? This early?" Quatre nodded sweetly. The American just stared at him a moment before shrugging and returning to the kitchen. A few minutes later, Duo handed his guest the requested drink, and slumped back into his chair. Noticing the contents of his owner's hand, Buddy invited himself on Duo's lap. His tail was wagging excitedly as he whimpered. "NO!" Duo commanded and pushed the dog to the floor. Quatre couldn't help but laugh as the puppy returned quickly and began to lick the bottom of the bottle. "Buddy, behave." Once again, the lab was shoved to the floor.

"How long have you had him?" Quatre wondered as he sipped his beer.

"About six months."

"And he already likes alcohol?"

"Yeah, well I got him from a kennel. The person who owned him before only gave him beer to drink."

"Thanks horrible." Quatre sympathized as Buddy jumped on the couch next to the blonde. He barked once, then sat on it's hind legs to begin begging. "Oh, you're so cute." Quatre squealed as he rubbed the exposed belly. Buddy enjoyed the attention, but as he was being scratched, he began inching toward the bottle in Quatre's hand.

"Buddy!" Duo softly scorned. The lab jumped to his feet. He bounced off the couch and sat by Duo's chair. "Go get a toy and we'll play." The puppy's ears perked at the invitation and sprinted toward the bedroom.

"He seems to be a good dog."

"Yeah, he is mostly. But there's times he can be a real handful."

"Now, who does that remind me of?"

"I have no ideal what you're talking about." Duo grinned mischievously as he stood and headed toward the back door.

"Of course you wouldn't." Quatre teased and followed him outside. Buddy was already outside, chewing on a tug toy. It was funny because Quatre didn't even hear or see the dog go out.

"Hey Q, can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"When you and Trowa get married. . ." Sitting his bottle on the ground, Duo walked over to the dog and grabbed the toy it was chewing. "Are you going to take his name, or is he taking yours, or what?"

"We talked about that for a while. . ." Quatre started and sat on the bottom step. He watched Duo manage to yank the toy away. "And he's agreed to take my name."

"That's odd. How did you manage to talk him into that?" Duo stopped and faced his friend, giving Buddy plenty of time to snatch the toy. Duo turned and started chasing the thief as he zig zag across the vas back yard.

"I didn't have to talk him into anything. In fact, it was his ideal. He doesn't really care too much for names, but he feels that the Winner name bares too much importance to be tossed aside."

"So why don't each of you just keep your original names then?"

"Call me silly, but I want us to have the same last name." Finally, Duo trapped the lab.

"Did I catch you?" Duo teased as he stepped closer. "Do I have you cornered?" The dog barked, then tried to run to the left, but Duo jumped in his way. He then tried going to the right, but it was the same scenario. "I think I won again." Duo taunted, then reached for his toy prize. Before his fingers touched the chewed material, Buddy growled and charged headlong between Duo's legs.

It was the first time the dog had tried that maneuver. Duo sought to grab him, but was a little too slow to react. The puppy ran to the middle of the yard, yelping victoriously. Duo walked over to Quatre. A little out of breath, he grabbed his beer and drank about a quater of it.

"I'll give you that one." Duo pointed at his pet and slumped onto the step. "He's getting faster." He breathed and turned to look at the ex-pilot. To his surprise, the big blue eyes were staring at him. "What?"

"I was just wondering what you were doing tonight."
"Why?" Duo asked skeptically.

"I was thinking that maybe we could go to a club or something."

"Okay, who are you and what have you done with my buddy?" Duo demanded as he sprang to his feet and studied the person next to him. Quatre laughed innocently.

"You don't go to clubs any more?"

"Yeah, I do. Since when do you?"

"I just haven't seen you in a while. You seem a little tense with just talking. So I figured if we did something you like, we could maybe get pass the tension. That's all."
"And the beer?"

"I just didn't want water." Quatre's eye fell to the bottle in his hands. Suddenly Duo felt bad.

"I'm sorry Q." He sat back down. "I haven't really been myself lately."

"And me being here isn't helping."

"It's not that."
"Then what is it?"

"It's just. . . I have a feeling that you're here to convince me to come to your wedding."

"You don't want to?" Quatre looked up at his violet eye comrade.

"We're behind at the yard." Duo forced. It was the first time he ever lied to his long-term friend. For that reason, he drown in his guilt the second he said it.

"Oh. . .I guess I can understand." Duo bit his lip to prevent himself from caving. "Do you still want to go out tonight?" He could tell that Quatre was trying to hide his hurt, which only made him feel even more guilty.

"Quatre, I can't face Heero." He blurted. "And if I see him with her. . ."

"I understand Duo. I had a feeling you would feel that way. It was harsh for me to expect you to come. It would just mean a lot to me if you did come. They haven't even confirmed that they were coming. Trowa said that they were expected on Earth that week, so he probably won't even be there." Duo stared at the Arab. He knew it. He knew this would happen. "Duo, please?" Duo turned from the sapphires, but it was too late. Quatre had already delivered the final blow. He only saw a split-second of it, but it was enough to become imbedded in his mind.

"Damnit Quatre, you just had to go and give me the 'look'."

"Does that mean you're coming?" Duo nodded solemnly, and Quatre hugged him happily. "Thank you Duo. Thank you so much."

"You can thank me by hooking me up with one of your available relatives." Quatre laughed. "I know you have a ton of them to spare."

Wu Fei paid the cab driver and turned to face the mansion. It sure looked the same, but not for long. By this time next week, it was going to be turned into something out of a bridal magazine. Which was why he was glad he didn't tell Sally about the wedding. Slinging his carry on bag over his shoulder, he walked up to the front porch. Just as he was about to ring the doorbell, the door flung open, and two small boys burst from the depths of the mansion.

Wu Fei quickly jumped out of the way as the children barreled down the stairs. They were twins, identical from their brown hair and eyes to the clothes that they wore. However, one of them appeared to be about a inch taller than the other. They were running around the circular drive playing tag.

"Sammy, Tyler, come back this instant!" A woman yelled as she stood in the doorway.

"We don't have to listen to you." One boy called.

"Yeah, you're nothing but a sister." The other laughed as he looked up at her. Suddenly he stopped running, and his brother ran into the back of him.

"Hey what'd you stop for?" The smaller boy asked, then looked up to see what was so interesting that it ceased their game. Both boys were now staring at Wu Fei.

"Whoa!" They cried in unison and ran over to him. Without warning, they began to feel his jacket.

"Hey, Mister, who are you?" The smaller of the two asked.

"You're a solider, aren't you Mister?" It took Wu Fei a moment to realize that they were talking about his Preventer's uniform. He had left straight after work and hadn't had a chance to change. In truth, he was so used to wearing the uniform, and being around others wearing the same thing, that he forgot how much it stood out.

"No." He answered softly. "There is no longer a need for soldiers."

"Yeah, I bet. That's what they want us to believe." The taller of the two boys stated.

"Mister, if you're not a solider, then what are you?" Wu Fei opened his mouth to answer, but the other boy interrupted.

"I bet you're a ex-Gundam pilot, aren't you?" Wu Fei's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"What makes you say that?"

"Are you kidding? You look like the type to be a ex-pilot. Look, you're all big and strong. Your muscles are as big as my head."

"I think that's enough." The woman standing next to the Preventer added. "You two need to go get cleaned up for lunch." She escorted the two boys in, then turned to Wu Fei. "I'm sorry about that. Sammy has an overactive imagination. Can I help you with something?"

"My name is Chang, Wu Fei."

"You're Wu Fei?" She asked a little too excitedly. "I'm sorry, I should have known. Please, come on in." She side stepped, then reached for one of his bags. "Here, let me help you."

"No. It's okay. I got it." Wu Fei countered and seized the bag before she could. Their eyes locked for a second.

"I'm being so rude, I never introduced myself. I'm Novia Absalom. Mother is on the deck with Trowa. They asked me to show you to your room. . .If that's okay?"

"It's fine." Wu Fei assured

"Are you sure you don't want me to carry something?" She asked as she started walking backwards towards the stairs.

"No, I can handle it."

"I've always been told that it's rude to not help guest with their luggage."

"Well, aren't you a guest too?" Novia slapped her forehead with the heel of her hand.

"Yeah, I guess I am. But I still feel bad about it." Wu Fei could tell that she was nervous. She lead the way to his room in silence. Once they reached their destination, she opened the door for him. "Umm. . We were about to have lunch. . .the bathroom is. . ."
"Over there." Wu Fei corrected knowingly and pointed in the opposite direction that she was about to. Whenever he visited Quatre and Trowa, they gave him this room. It was the only room that over looked the extravagant garden.

"I guess you know this place better than I do." She nervously laughed. Wu Fei smiled in return. "I guess I'll leave you to wash up." She closed the door and dashed down the hall as quickly as she could to the deck.

"I just don't think that Quatre would appreciate it Trowa." Kanissa said sternly as she pointed at the red tulips. "I still say we should go with the white ones." Novia bounced into the room smiling ear to ear.

"Trowa! You never told me that Wu Fei was so gorgeous." Novia plopped in the seat next to the Latin.

"Novia, that was rude. We were in the middle of a conversation."

"I'm sorry mother. I didn't mean to cut you off Trowa."

"Maybe we should just quit for a while." Trowa suggested. In truth, Kanissa had him on pins and needles. Every time he suggested something, she would insist on the complete opposite. She then would bring up the ideal that his suggestion wouldn't be to Quatre's liking. It was rather frustrating.

"Trowa, the wedding is next week. There isn't too much else to do."

"Which is why we should relax." Trowa stood up and left the room. Novia sprang to her feet to follow him. She wanted to know every last detail he had about Wu Fei.

"Where do you think you're going?" Kanissa asked suddenly.

"I was just going to have a word or two with Trowa."

"About?" Novia watched as her mother stood and collected the pamphlets.

"The usual, weather, how his day went. . ." Her mother turned demanding brown eyes at her. "And everything he knows about Wu Fei."

"Novia, I do not want you to get close to this Wu Fei."

"But mom, have you seen him? And I love his voice. He's so cool." The excitement fled from her tone as she met her mother's gaze.

"I mean it. Stay away from him." She waved a pamphlet at her daughter.

"Come on, you're just being paranoid."

"First off Novia, you're not even old enough to legally drink."

"Mom. . ."
"Secondly, he's too old for you."

"But can't I at least flirt? I mean with Uncle Quatre and Trowa around, I don't think he'll do anything. Not that he would any ways."

"What makes you so sure he wouldn't?"

"He's Chinese. Chinese fathers teach their sons to respect women."

"They also believe that their women should walk behind them."

"That's not true."

"Nor is what you said."

"Mom. . ."

"I said what I had to say. And you better follow."

" 'And you better follow.'" Novia mocked once her mother was gone. "Yeah, right. Like I'm going to listen to that." She left the room in search of Trowa.

It didn't take long. He was walking through the garden. She was about to approach when suddenly he stopped in his tracks and began to look around. She wasn't sure why, but she didn't want him to know that she was there. So she ducked behind the nearest bush and watched him. Suddenly, a figure emerged from a shrub behind him. Trowa only had enough time to turn around as Wu Fei pounced on him and easily pinned the taller man to the ground.

"You're reaction time is slower Barton." Wu Fei sneered.

"Nice to see you too." Trowa shot back. In one swift movement, Wu Fei was thrown from the oppressed body. As he landed, Trowa flipped to his feet.

"Congratulations on snagging Winner."

"Thanks. . .How are things with. . ."

"Don't even ask. I'm here to relax, and that means no thinking about any female."

"Well, it looks like you caught one girl's attention." Trowa observed as the two started walking.

"Novia." Wu Fei smiled. "What can I say?"

"Someone's ego sure did grow."

"As did someone's words per sentence. . .Heard you have trouble with the soon-to-be-in-laws a few minutes ago."

"What can I do?"

"How about telling her where to get off? It's your wedding too."

"Just between us Wu Fei. . . .I don't care what color the flowers are or anything else for that matter." Wu Fei stopped in his tracks and searched his friend for an explanation. "We're already married."

"Okay, you lost me." Trowa turned to face the China man.

"This huge wedding next week is just a renewing. We got married three months ago in Paris."

"Then why go through all this trouble?"

"Well, for one, all of Quatre's family wants him to have a formal wedding. Secondly, this is just a show for the news. Then there's the reason I asked you to come early."

"Which is. . ."

"Heero and Duo."

"Please don't tell me you're thinking what I think you're thinking." The look in Trowa's eyes confirmed the fear. "Damn that look. You have to find a way around that."

"I'm working on it. Will you help?"

"Well. . ."

"If you don't say 'yes' now, you will when Quatre comes home."

"What do you have planned?" Novia tried to listen to the rest of their conversation, but the two men were talking to softly.

"What are you doing here?" Sammy asked rather loudly. Novia threw her hand across his mouth to silence him, but it was too late. Trowa walked around the bush and stared at the siblings.

"Ummm. . .mother sent me out here to find you."

"No she didn't, because she sent me to find you and to make sure you weren't hitting on any Wu Fei. Whatever that is." Novia's cheeks gave way to a dark crimson as she glanced at Wu Fei. His coal eyes were staring at her, not too surprised by the statement.

"But mother wants everyone to show up for lunch. Which is probably on the table right now." Trowa turned to look at his friend.

"Have you eaten yet Wu Fei?"

"I only had some peanuts on the way here."

"You're Wu Fei?" Sammy blurted as he stared in awe. "That's a cool name. It would be a perfect name for a Gundam pilot."

"Gundam pilot?" Trowa's eyebrow arched.

"Sammy thinks I'm an ex-Gundam pilot."

"Yeah, and he came dressed in this cool uniform." Sammy continued excitedly. "But he took it off. You shouldn't have."

"Let's go Sammy." Novia interrupted and roughly grabbed his arm to lead him to the mansion. Secretly, she was thinking the same thing. She thought he looked more sexy in the uniform with the tight fitting jeans and shirt. Now he looked like a grandfather dressed purely in white baggy clothes.

"Why would Sammy think you're an ex-Gundam pilot?" Trowa asked as Wu Fei begin to follow the arguing brother and sister.

"I'm strong." He laughed and glanced back at Trowa.

Wu Fei could feel the young eyes watching him from across the table. He knew exactly what those eyes were thinking and he couldn't help but laugh inwardly. For yet another pair of eyes were glaring at the first for even noticing that he was there. Kanissa wiped her mouth in a very dainty manner and replaced the napkin. She then turned to face Trowa.

"Did you tell Wu Fei about his attire for the rest of the week?" She asked promptly and glanced at the Chinese guest.

"I didn't get a chance to yet." Trowa answered without making eye contact.

"Well, that was careless." She looked over at Wu Fei. "Today is fine, but for the rest of the week, we are to wear formal attire." Wu Fei stared at the woman a moment. Why was she treating Trowa like a child. Furthermore, why was he taking it from her. "Maybe after lunch, we can review the buffet menu." Trowa swallowed hard and forced himself not to snap. They have gone over that list at least four times since Quatre had left yesterday. The last thing he wanted to do right now was go over it again.

"We've been over it four times."

"Don't you want this to be perfect? Don't you want Quatre to have a beautiful wedding that he'll always be able to cherish?" The tone she used was clearly stating that Trowa didn't care if that happened. "Do you want someone to get sick at your wedding? I mean the guest list keeps changing. I'm sure you don't want to end up getting something someone is allergic to." Trowa remained silent. "Well, I can see that these trivial things don't matter to you."

"We can do it some other time, I have to take Wu Fei to his fitting."

"May we go too?" Novia asked suddenly.

"Yeah, can we go too mom?" Sammy added and glanced over at Wu Fei.

"No, you may not." Kanissa answered while glaring at her daughter.

"But mom, Sammy and Tyler haven't been for their fittings yet either. I can have them done while Wu Fei is. . ."

"I said no Novia. I'm sure Trowa and Wu Fei want to be bothered with children."
"I don't think it would be any problem." Wu Fei started. Kanissa had spent the entire lunch making Trowa seem like he didn't care about the wedding. He knew that his comrade was too passive to say anything. Wu Fei, on the other hand, couldn't take any more of it. "I think between the three of us, we can handle a couple of kids."

"Besides, you said this morning that you were tired of them getting in your way." Novia added. "And since you're so busy. . .this will be more convient."

"After all. . ." Wu Fei couldn't help but add. "I'm sure Quatre wouldn't want his nephews wearing blue jeans to his wedding." He imitated her so well, that even Novia giggled. Kanissa silently glared at him, wanting nothing more than for him to disappear. She had never been insulted as such.
