Summary: A single night of comfort turns into Relena's lifetime commitment to the children who came of it, but when their father's identity comes out, it's hard to see where other important people in their lives will fit into this strange picture, and if, somehow, they can all become a family.

Can't Have It All

Chapter 15

Kyoko slept serenely, her face flushed and warm, curled up against her father's chest, while Aiko was in a similarly comfortable
position on Heero. Light brown hair curled around each young face, soft and fine against their skin, while thick lashes cast shadows
over their cheeks. The sweet smell of young child and just a hint of lavender were in the air. Aiko's small hand was curled loosely
about Heero's index finger. The only sound was the occasional sucking reflex that young children have when they sleep. The two
men looked at each other and their gazes held. They didn't need words to express their joy at having each other and the two little
imps. Words would only ruin this, anyway.

Heero looked down at the beautiful child in his lap, marveling for the nth time that she was a product of the person he loved more than anything and one of his best friends.

It didn't bother him anymore, only awed and humbled him. People could do this. They could pick up the pieces of broken lives, and have enough of them left over to create more life. This one child he held would have made all he had done for peace worthwhile. The two of them together was more than he could have hoped for. But he knew that it didn't end there. Everywhere there were and would continue to be children, born because he had done things to ensure it.

Those nameless, faceless children, precious as they were, didn't concern him. The one in his lap and her sister did. He had been there when they were born, changed their diapers, held them when they cried. He had made them laugh. How could the cold machine he'd once thought himself to be make innocent children laugh? To put it simply, it couldn't. Relena had given Heero his hope for peace, Duo had given him his emotions, and their children had given him his humanity. Gods, but he loved them, for that if nothing else. But there was more. Part of him still couldn't believe it, that these precious, amazing creatures had come from Duo. Duo was his heart, and that made these his heart's children. His own children. They would be. They had to be. He was prepared to lie, wheedle, bargain or beg, whatever it took, to make them his own. He loved them, and they were his, and it really was that simple. He only hoped Relena could understand that.

"Don't think about it now, lover. Just enjoy being with them," Duo said softly, carefully cuddling his sleeping bundle.

Heero reached down and stroked Aiko's cheek. "They do look something like you," he announced suddenly.

Duo smiled, pleased in spite of himself. "You think so?"

"It's more noticeable when they are asleep, but yes. Look at the shape of their faces. Their eyebrows are shaped like yours, too. And their noses turn up more than Relena's does."

"I only hope Relena can forgive me enough that they aren't taken away from us completely. I'm terrified for my own sake, of course, but I worry about you, too. I know you love them. I may deserve it, but you haven't done anything wrong. Where will you be while I'm throwing myself on her tender mercies, anyway?"

"You do not deserve to be separated from these girls. You may have done wrong, but you thought it was right at the time. And to answer your question, I will be right there with you. You think I'm leaving you to face her alone?" Heero demanded.

Duo leaned over carefully and kissed his lover, mindful not to disturb the two little ones. His braid slid over his shoulder, but Heero caught it with his free hand and held it. His blue eyes were filled with a fierce kind of loyalty, the kind that only comes from love. Duo smiled.

"We'll be okay," he said softly, though he wasn't sure which of them he was trying to convince. Some of the tension he'd been feeling for weeks left him, though He leaned his head against Heero's shoulder and closed his eyes, shifting once for comfort. His smile returned a bit as he allowed himself to be reassured by the scents of Heero and lavender and the warm weight against his chest. He felt Heero's breathing become slower and deeper, and tried to match the change in pattern. In a matter of moments, huddled together on the couch, they were all sleeping peacefully.

"Some more of those juice packs for the girls," Relena decided, placing them in the shopping cart. She'd never had to do something
as mundane as grocery shopping before coming to stay with Wufei, but the novelty still hadn't worn off.

"Is there anything we've forgotten?" Wufei asked.

Relena checked her mental list. "I'd like to pick up some more body wash while we're here. I'll be out by tomorrow, and my skin is too sensitive for most kinds of soap."

They made their way to the section of the store that was devoted to hygiene and, after some searching, found her brand. As they walked toward the checkout, Relena stopped in the middle of the aisle.

She seemed to deliberate for a moment, then picked up a box of condoms from the shelf and placed them in the cart. Wufei felt his eyebrows raise.

Relena fought the urge to blush. "Oral contraceptives can take six to eight weeks to become fully effective," she explained, as though
quoting a pamphlet she'd read somewhere. "Which reminds me, we also need to stop by the pharmacy."

Wufei's lips twitched, and finally he couldn't help but smile. He caught her in his arms and kissed her, wondering in the feeling of
holding her. "Only get those if you're sure. I won't pressure you into anything. Especially now, when you have a lot on your mind."

"I know, but I don't want to wait. This is about you and me. Duo and Heero have nothing to do with it."

"She ain't really sick," one of the guards declared, waving his soda bottle in the general direction of the picture of Relena on the
television screen.

"What do you mean, she ain't really sick?" his buddy asked.

"Just what I said. Apparently, the Winner kid has been pullin' strings, making everybody think she's been bed-ridden, when the truth is; she's been missing for weeks. They finally found out she's been laying low in China, and sent that gundam pilot she was always
hanging around with after her. Somebody else, too, but they're not sure who it is yet. Hand me that sandwich, would you? Thanks."

"How did the boss lady find out about it?" he asked, chewing on the finger of one glove absently.

"Damn. I got mustard on my shirt. Are there any napkins over there?" The requested napkins were passed. "Monitoring her brother's mail. You remember, from the war, the dip in the mask? He got an encrypted message from that guy that lives with Winner kid. Another damn gundam pilot. Boss lady can figure maybe one word in three, but she's managed to get that much information."

"She gonna do anything about it?" the guard asked, looking down at the chewed glove. He'd have to replace it, again, but damn, the things got on his nerves.

"I think so. Seems the minister took her brats with her. The boss lady thinks she knows where they are."
