Relena's lifetime commitment to the children who came of it, but when
their father's identity comes out, it's hard to see where other important
people in their lives will fit into this strange picture, and if,
somehow, they can all become a family.
Can't Have It All Chapter 10 Wufei hung his jacket on the coat rack and braced himself. His house would be wrecked, he just knew it. Hed had some small experience with children, and he had been impressed. The impression was one of clamor, chaos, and, above all, clutter. The fact that they were Maxwells did nothing to ease his fears in this regard. He went into the living room and stopped short in amazement. Sunlight streamed through the windows onto a peaceful scene. Relena was curled up on the couch, absently biting her bottom lip, one eye on the paperwork she held, the other on the two children playing on the floor. The twins were playing a game where one of them would make a quiet, cooing sound and the other would imitate it. But the real source of his shock was a small pile between the pair and the couch. There were two dolls and a single toy lying on his living room floor. That was all. Suddenly, two pairs of bright blue eyes were on him, and there were twin shrieks of delight. Jumping up with seemingly no effort, the girls ran to him, wobbling a bit as they tested the limits of their still precarious balance. He looked down, feeling his astonishment grow as little arms were wrapped around each leg. Relena smiled from the couch. Theyve never met a stranger, but its rare for them to be taken with someone so quickly. Wufei knelt down beside the children, only to have them immediately put their arms around his neck. Just what do you two want? he asked. Dink, Kyoko replied promptly. Wufei smiled at her. Is that so? He looked at Aiko, What about you, little one? Aiko nodded, impossibly wide eyes looking into his. Dink, she agreed. He put an arm under each child and scooped them both up. I think we can handle that. Relena looked up from her work. Do you want me to do it? Well be fine, Wufei told her before disappearing into the kitchen. Relena nodded and looked back to her work. When she had reviewed the document in its entirety, she looked up to find the three still had not returned. She pulled her legs from beneath her, stretching as she stood, and went toward the kitchen to look for them. She paused in the doorway of the dining room. Two chairs sat side-by-side, with one toddler in each. Both rested a cup of milk in front of them on the seat. Wufei sat across from them, a smile on his face, elbows on his knees. Hmm and where is your ear? Both girls grabbed their ears and giggled. Excellent. What about your nose? Kyoko held her nose, but Aiko had a different idea. She leaned forward and gently wrapped her tiny fingers around Wufeis nose. Nose, she proclaimed. Then she laughed out loud, a joyous sound that Relena couldnt help but smile at. Yes, that is my nose. But where is yours? Wufei said, a smile tugging at his lips despite himself. He nodded his approval when she moved her hand from his face to her own. Looks like Mommy missed us. Show her what you showed me. The twins exchanged a glance, then impishly blew Relena kisses. Her heart melted all over again. My angels, she said warmly, moving around the table to pull her girls into a hug. Angels? They certainly look the part, though I suspect that means they act like Duo, hmm? They can be little terrors, sometimes, she confirmed. Thats why I dont trust the way theyve been all sunshine and sweetness today. Im waiting for the other shoe to drop. Shoo Kyoko cooed proudly, taking one of hers in her hand and nearly twisting it off her foot. Relena and Wufei looked at each other. I didnt teach her that, Relena said. Wufei shook his head. Who knows where children learn things. I dont understand little ones at all - especially girls. You seemed to be doing fine a minute ago, Relena smiled. Just be careful, because this pair will steal everything they can get their little hands on. Your wallet, your belt, shoelaces, jewelry, random articles from around the house, if it isnt bolted down, I suggest you look in their playpen when things go missing. They seem to have acquired nimble fingers from somewhere. She turned and went back to the living room. As she sat down, Relena considered telling Wufei that they could also steal his heart, but she rather thought hed find that out on his own. She was stabbed with a strange emotion, there and gone before she could examine it. She considered packing up her work and going back to the dining room and the trio it contained, but changed her mind immediately. If Wufei needed her help, he would let her know.
He sighed and shifted, yet again, under his blanket. He was turning into a regular insomniac. He tried to blame it on the stress, the bed, the nightmares, the light outside his window, but in his heart, he blamed himself. He wanted to be in his own bed, with his lover, and the knowledge that his children were sleeping, safe and well, just down the hall. He wanted to catch the latest horror flick with Relena, knowing that they would be the only two people in the theater who would laugh all the way through. He wanted - he wanted - damn it, but he wanted his life back. Giving up, Duo pushed himself upright in the bed. He couldnt help it; he cried. He didnt know how long he sat like that, with silent tears running down his face. He thought it was a long time, though. Certainly the sky outside his window seemed lighter. Finally he got up and went into the in suite bathroom.
A red-eyed figure stared back at him. They need time. You cant
just fuck up peoples lives and then expect them to forget it
overnight. It takes time. Everything will be okay, he told his
reflection. His slender fingers burrowed into his hair, digging at
the stress headache he seemed to have perpetually now. He saw his
reflections lips move, but the voice was his, the tone, doubtful.
Yeah, sure. ~ * ~ |
