Can't Have It All Chapter 11 Are you sure about this, Wufei? Relena asked -- for the third time since hed called to tell her of his idea. Very. Youve been cooped up in the house with your children for two weeks now. You need a break. Sally doesnt mind, and she has complete deniability. I just called to tell you now because I know how long it takes a woman to prepare for anything. Do you think you can be ready to go by six tonight? She gave him a mildly dirty look. Wufei, its eleven oclock in the morning. He leveled a steady gaze at her, and, when he couldnt help it anymore, smirked. Was that a yes or a no? I suppose, if I hurry, she replied, rolling her eyes at him. Her sarcasm didnt bother him in the least. But if Im really leaving my babies for six whole hours, this better be good, Chang. Youll never regret it. I have to go, Im getting another call. Ill be home early. Sally will arrive around five-thirty. Fine. Have a good day. Relena waited until he had replied in kind and then disconnected the call. She had a lot to do, so she decided to feed the twins an early lunch, bumping the rest of the daily schedule up enough to give Sally something of a break at bedtime. When she had put them down for their nap, she went to get a shower, unable to help feeling a bit excited about a night on the town, no matter where Wufei decided to take her. At five-thirty, Sally was there, as promised, hugging Relena and exclaiming over her children. She was a natural with children and the two were putty in her hands in a matter of minutes. Relena gave Sally some last minute instructions as she put on her dress in room she had inhabited for the past thirteen days. As she added a few final touches, Sally whistled. I hope Wufei is packing. Thats the only way hell be able to keep them off of you. That, my dear, is a man-catching dress. Relena frowned down at her choice. It wasnt that dressy, but very flattering, she supposed. Do you think so? Should I change? Oh, no, youre perfect like you are, Sally assured her. Now, dont keep Wufei waiting too long, and dont worry about us. Well be fine. Just have a good time. I would say that I will, but Wufei wont tell me where were going, she muttered. He can be so trying sometimes. Keep telling yourself that, and maybe your hands will stop shaking, Sally replied with a grin. Relenas head snapped around to where she sat, on the edge of the bed. What does that mean? she asked, feeling heat rise from her neck. Its nothing to be embarrassed about. Everybody gets first-date jitters. You should have seen Wufei when he explained the situation to me. He was so uncomfortable. Poor man, if I hadnt felt so sorry for him, I would have laughed then and there. As it was, I managed to wait until he was gone. Relena stared at the grinning woman, wondering which of them had lost her mind. Wufei had told Sally this was a date? Or had Sally assumed it was, because of Wufeis discomfort? Her mind in a whirl, Relena checked the mirror again and told herself it didnt matter if Wufei considered it a date. Wufei was waiting in the living room when Relena came out. She might have stayed in her room longer if Sally hadnt accused her of hiding. She told herself she was taking too much of what Sally said to heart. Wufei stood quickly when she entered, giving her an appreciative once-over. He took her hand and kissed it. You look lovely, he said before releasing her. Her body did a weird twisty warm thing where her stomach decided to see what happened if it turned upside down. She firmly told herself to stop it. Wufei didnt like her like that, she wasnt his type. Wufeis own thoughts were an echo of Sallys, and he jokingly wondered to himself if he should bring extra ammunition, just in case. His thoughts were interrupted by two giggling little imps. He bent and picked them up, kissing each on the cheek before passing them, one at a time, to their mother. If you dont watch Aiko, shell climb out of bed in the middle of the night. We should be back before her nightly dash for freedom, but I thought you should know, just in case, he told Sally. His friend smiled at him. Dont worry. Ill watch them carefully. Now, get out of here! Shoo! SHOO! Kyoko shrieked in delight. She and Sally laughed, and after a moments alarm, so did Aiko. Relena and Wufei smiled at each other as he held the door open for her to exit. Bye! Have fun! Sally called after them. When the door had closed, she looked at Kyokos earnest face. So, I stretched the truth with your Mommy, a little bit. Shell thank me later. Meanwhile, Relena was trying to coax Wufei into telling her where they were going. At last he relented enough to tell her at what restaurant their evening would start. The name made her stomach flip-flop again. It was a well-known fact that lovers were the most frequent patrons of the classy bistro. It was too cozy to serve as anything practical. She took a deep breath and tried to relax. She decided her nervousness came from the fact that this was the first real date shed been on, ever. Oh, sure, shed had escorts to any number of functions and events, but it was clear to her, and had been for a while, that they were just doing their jobs. They werent really interested in her. This was different. She stole a glance at Wufei. She liked him, she decided. Shed never really disliked him, of course. It was just a matter of not knowing him very well. Now that she had spent time with him, knew him better, she respected him and enjoyed his company. The most surprising thing, Relena concluded, was his sense of humor. The way others had spoken of Wufei, she had expected him not to have one. Two weeks in his home had shown her quite the opposite. His humor was dry, intellectual -- and generally wicked. When she thought about it, it was a good balance to his stoic, if somewhat arrogant, nature. He was never more appealing than when he looked at her with innocent eyes and gave some invariably witty and self-depreciating remark that they both knew he didnt mean. She suddenly chuckled. What are you laughing at? he asked, glancing briefly at her before turning his eyes back to the road. You, she said with a smile. You really are amazing. He gave her a smirk that was purely his. Of course I am. It was kind of you to bring it up, though. His hand found hers briefly and squeezed. Youre pretty amazing, too. Wufei, I Im glad were doing this. Thank you. And not just for tonight, but for everything. Its my pleasure. You needed someone, and
Im just glad it could be me, he replied, giving her the
gentlest smile shed ever seen cross his face. It was at that
moment that Relena Peacecraft knew herself to be in very real danger
of falling in love. ~ * ~ |
