Welcome Home

Part 12

Duo stopped at the doorway to his bed room. He watched as Wu Fei continued to his own. Suddenly, a wave of courage and yearning washed over him. He dashed down the hall toward the Chinese boy and leaned against the door to the bed room before it could be opened.

"Something wrong?" Wu Fei wondered aloud.

"Why not come sleep with me tonight?" Duo grinned.

"Why?"

"Why not?" Wu Fei stared at the American. "Look, Heero and Trowa aren't fighting any more, so they're probably going to be loud all night again. . .and Quatre's bent on sleeping alone tonight."

"Don't you?"

"Actually, I wouldn't mind having a bed fellow. . ." Staring into the hopeful eyes, Wu Fei caved. Duo didn't have to ask to know that he won over. Taking Wu Fei's hand in his, he lead him back down the hall to his room. As the two walked into the room, Duo listlessly removed his shirt and tossed it on the floor. He then toed off his shoes and reached for his button and zipper of the pants. At that moment, he caught a glimpse of Wu Fei in the corner of his eye. He stopped the procession and faced the Chinese boy. "Would it be too uncomfortable if I slept in my boxers?" Wu Fei shook his head and tore his eyes from the half naked boy. He also discarded his shirt; but, as always, left his pants before climbing in bed.

At first, he kept his back to the American. Though they had slept in a bed room together, it was never the same bed. . .and for some odd reason, he was feeling a little nervous about sleeping next to Duo. As he felt his companion climb under the sheets, the uneasiness grew slightly. The lights were turned off, and the next ten minutes were spent in uncomfortable silence. Wu Fei noted Duo's breathing, and knew that the braided boy was still awake.

"Can I ask you something?" Wu Fei's question sliced through the darkness.

"Sure."

"Why me?"

"Huh?" Duo, who was originally laying on his side as well, rolled onto his back and looked at the dark area where Wu Fei was laying.

"Why do you want to be with me?" Duo was quite a moment as he decided on the words to chose.

"I've never met anyone like you Wu-wu. Just one look, and I fell head over heels for you. . .and ever since that, the more I learn about you. . .the more I like."

Heero pulled the sheet more to the left to eliminated a crease that had formed in the middle. He picked up the two pillows and tossed them onto a chair in the corner. This allowed him to pull the sheet to the top of the mattress and tuck it under. Trowa stepped up behind his lover and slipped his arms around Heero's waist. Heero jumped at the touch. In truth, he hadn't heard Trowa approach, so when he was hugged, it took him by surprise.

"Are you losing your touch?" Trowa teased and kissed the nape of his neck.

"What are you up to Trowa?" Heero question and a devious smirk pulled the Latin's lips.

"I'm sure you don't have to really guess what that is." He assured and pressed himself against Heero's back. The intention could be felt against his lower back.

"I'm talking about Duo. You're being unusually nice toward him."

"I meant what I said at dinner tonight Heero. I know how much it bothers you when we fight. So I've decided to ease off." Heero turned to face his boyfriend. "I know I've been a prick lately, but let me make it up to you." With that, he tenderly kissed his partner's lips. Heero returned the gesture, though he couldn't help but feel that something wasn't right. . .something wasn't normal. Trowa began to slowly push the stronger boy back on the bed; their lips never parting. As Heero was laid back, Trowa straddled him, and allowed his hands to roam the muscular body.

"You know that if you are planning anything, I'll find out about it." Heero stated once they pulled apart. "It would be better if you'd just come out and say it now."

"I told you Heero. . .I wouldn't lie to you." As he stared into the emeralds, his doubt only increased. It was true that Trowa never lied to him before. . .but something in his eyes wasn't right.

"You're getting awfully close to him." Heero assured but kept his eyes to the eggs that he was frying.

"To who?" Duo wondered and plopped down on the counter top next to his friend.

"Wu Fei."

"Is that a bad thing?"

"Did you forget how he treated you?"

"So he made a mistake. I forgot and forgave."

"Is it worth it Duo?" Heero asked and looked up into the violet eyes. "Can you truly trust him? Or is what you have a physical attraction?"

"No. I have a physical attraction to you. His is more deeper. Come on Heero, you should be happy for me. I was for you when you got together with Cyclops. I didn't approve, but I still supported you."

"This is different."

"How's it different?"

"Trowa never acted the way he did. Wu Fei is just too unpredictable. . .besides, what's going to happen when the three weeks are up and he goes back to work? Are you going to be a Preventer too?" Duo was silent a moment. Both boys knew that Duo had a problem with authority. . .and becoming a Preventer left no chances of avoiding that.

"I'm sure that we'll work something out."

"Like what? Him quitting?" Heero made sure to let the other boy know what he really thought about the suggestion in those four simple words.

"Why can't you support me Heero? Don't you want me to be happy?"

"I do. . .but I just don't think you can be with him."

"Just because you don't trust him. . .well I do. I trust him as much as I trust you. I think it's bullshit that you can't back me up Heero. Just because the two of you have had a few sour times doesn't mean I should stay away from him. I mean, it's the same deal with me and Trowa, but I let it slide."

"Duo. . ."

"Don't give him a hard time Heero. . .please don't. Look, I stopped fighting with Cyclops. Can't you do that for me?"

"You didn't stop fighting with Trowa, he stopped fighting with you."

"Heero."

"I won't say anything Duo, but that doesn't mean that I won't beat the hell out of him if he hurts you again."

"It is so hot." Duo whined as he slumped onto the grass. "How can you stand it?" He asked, and looked over at Wu Fei, who was continuing to replace the siding of the house. "It's like the frickin desert out here." Wu Fei only laughed as he stopped long enough to wipe the sweat from his forehead. "Why don't we got sneak off to the pond for a cool dip? The others wouldn't have to know." For the pass three days, the four boys had done nothing but work around the house, eat, and sleep. Duo's complaining only occurred now because the temperature was well into the nineties. "Come on, just a quick swim. It'll feel good for a change."

"I know you. If you stop to take a swim, the rest of the work would be forgotten."

"I'm dying here. I need something to cool down, or at least relax. Do you want me to get a heat stroke?" Wu Fei stopped and walked over to the American. He kneeled in front of him and stared deeply into the other's eyes.

"One quick swim, and if you don't get right back to work, then all of us get the rest of the day off."

"Deal." Duo jumped to his feet and ran toward the pond. Smiling, Wu Fei stood and started to follow.

"Where are you going?" Heero asked and the Chinese boy turned around to face the question.

"A swim. . .want to come?"

"No." Heero's tone was as cold as it was when they first met.

"Hey Heero!" Duo called several yards away. "Why not come and cool down with us? Get Tro and Q too." Heero hesitated a moment before nodding. For the previous few days, Heero had been keeping a close eye on Wu Fei. He still didn't trust the Chinese boy. Wu Fei had already hurt Duo once. . .once too many. For that reason, there was a strained air between the two boys. Pushing the thoughts away, Heero headed back in and upstairs to the room that Trowa and Quatre were working on together. As he entered, he was surprised to find that the room was nearly done. The walls had been cleaned spotless, the furniture reupholstered, and the windows that were cracked had been replaced. The strange thing was that they had started only a half an hour ago. Trowa was the first to look up at Heero.

"You okay?" He asked, noting the astound look in Heero's eyes.

"Duo thinks that we should take a break and go swimming. . .what do you think?" Trowa and Quatre looked at each other quickly.

"Maybe once we get this room done." Trowa answered emotionlessly. "But you can go ahead. We shouldn't be long." A chill ran down Heero's spine as he listened to his boyfriend. Ever since Trowa had come to, he had been acting strangely. . .and if that wasn't bad enough, Quatre seem to have joined in the weirdness. The Arab appeared just as cold and lifeless as Trowa always have. However, since Wu Fei and Duo were more wrapped up in each other, Heero was the only one to notice that their friends had changed at all. Due to the sheer creepy feeling he was getting from them, he turned and headed outside to join Wu Fei and Duo.

He was at the top of the stairs when he heard someone humming a familiar song. At first, he thought it was Trowa. . .but as he held his breath to listen more closely to the soft sound, he realized that it wasn't. Curious, he walked back to the room that he had just left. As he stood on the threshold, he found that the room was like new, and neither Quatre nor Trowa could be seen.

"Trowa?" Heero called and looked up and down the hall. The humming was still going, but other than that, it was silent. After giving the room a thorough check, Heero set out to find the source of the humming. It seemed to be coming from the attic. He followed it upstairs and half way down the hall. As he stopped at a door to the right, he grabbed the knob to open it. . .however, it was locked. He tried turning the other way, but it didn't help. The humming was much louder here. Determine to know what was going on, Heero slammed his shoulder into the door, in hopes of breaking it in or at least jarring it open. Neither happened.

Confused, he released the door knob and took a few steps back, prepping himself for a running ram. As he started to run, the door opened without being touched. He stopped at the threshold and looked around the large room. It seemed to have been a child's play room. It was literally divided in half, with one side filled with dolls and the other action figures.

There was a girl sitting on a on the floor, next to a table that sported a model town. Her back was toward Heero, as she was humming and brushing the pink locks of a doll's hair. Heero stared at the girl, wondering where she had come from. . .and what she was doing there. As he stepped closer, the girl didn't seem to have noticed him approaching. It was when he was on the opposite side of the table that she stopped humming and brushing.

"You're a very mean person." She whispered and turned around to face Heero. The deep violet eyes seemed so familiar to him; but he wasn't granted long to think about it as the door to the room slammed shut. Heero spun around to stare at the door.

"Who the hell are you?" Heero questioned as he turned back to the girl, but she was gone. It was then that he realized that he was outside. He was standing on the grass, staring at the road in front of him. Confused, he looked around, trying to figure out where he was. He turned around to find himself staring at a house. . .but it wasn't Duo's. . .in fact, it didn't even look real.

He walked up to the house and touched the window to find that it was only paint. Loud laughter brought his attention above him. He could clearly see the girl, but she was the size of a giant. Heero stepped back as he found that he was staring at the ceiling above her. He then realized that he had somehow been shrunk and placed inside a model town.

"You won't bother Benny anymore." The girl smiled and began to cover the town with a cloth. Heero was stunned to silence as the cloth was pulled over him and darkness enveloped him.

"Benny?!?"
