Welcome Home

Part 11

Wu Fei stepped onto the threshold of the bedroom. Heero was sitting on the edge of the bed watching over Trowa. The Latin had yet to wake from earlier that day. Since Duo emerged into the woods and told them that he was found. Heero seemed surprised. The room that Duo describe wasn't one that he had come across when he searched the first time around. It was possible that he did miss it. . .though unlikely. Further more, it made no sense why Trowa would have been in the attic alone anyway.

"Yuy, do you need anything?" Wu Fei asked softly and Heero shook his head. "Good night then."

"Night." Heero responded, without looking up at the Chinese boy. Wu Fei headed toward his room, stopping first to say goodnight to Duo and Quatre. He knocked on the door and was shortly followed by Duo telling him to come in. The American was sitting cross legged on the bed brushing his wet hair. Wu Fei stared at the figure a moment before speaking.

"I just came to say good night." He stated quickly and started to leave.

"Oh, you came to say good night? Thank you." A smile pulled at Duo's lips. "You know, the offer of staying the night in my room still stands." Wu Fei looked over at the heart shaped frame.

"Where's Winner?"

"He said that he wanted to stay the night in his own room. You know, with all the weird stuff going on. . .I might not like being alone." Duo smirked and slightly titled his head.

"Goodnight Maxwell." Wu Fei called and left, closing the door behind him. He leaned against the closed door a moment, wondering if he should stop trying to resist. After all, it has been two years since Duo started this cat and mouse game. He seemed more determined now than ever. His interest didn't waiver in the least. Maybe Wu Fei had been quick to judge him. While lost in thought, the bed room door opened, catching Wu Fei off guard. He fell backward ontop of Duo. The American grunted in pain as they hit the floor. Wu Fei sat up straight and turned to look at Duo. "Are you okay?" He asked suddenly.

"Yeah." Duo assured with a mischievous smirk on his lips. "Were you standing guard at my door?"

"No. . .I was. . .just. . .um. . ."

"Mhmmm?" Wu Fei pushed to his feet and left the room. "I really don't mind." Duo called after him. Duo watched the strong frame disappear into his own room. Wu Fei slumped against the closed door of his own room. Part of him wanted to take Duo up on his offer. . .but he knew how quickly the American switched from one boyfriend to the next. Everytime that he talked with Duo on the phone for the pass two years, he heard about some new guy that Duo claimed he cared a lot about. . .at least until the next time they talked. If Duo was having a hard time keeping a relationship with those guys, what would make Wu Fei any different? He would definitely consider a relationship; but never anything that was done as a good time or fun at his expense. Sometimes it was hard to tell what Duo's true intentions were.

On the other hand, it's been two years since the American started chasing Wu Fei. . .and in those two years, he didn't appear to lose interest or waiver in the least. Perhaps all the other guys that he dated was just his way of telling Wu Fei that he could easily get someone else. . .or maybe none of them made him happy. He remembered how much the heart shaped face lit up when he had appeared at the funeral home that day. Especially after hearing from everyone else how upset Duo had been that day. As soon as Wu Fei got there, his mood shifted to the normal happy-go-lucky boy he knew.

Then again, their lives were completely different and separate. Duo worked in a stress free, laid back, stationary salvage yard. Wu Fei was in a tight lip, nail biting, always on the go career. It wouldn't be right to ask Duo to give up something he loved to do for him. . .then again, when the house is done, then this would be his work. He would definitely need someone to help him come up with good plots and clues for the guest every weekend. Wu Fei had always enjoyed reading good mystery novels; and due to that, his mind was always working as a problem solvere. Wu Fei would definitely give up being a Preventer, if properly motivated. . .and Duo was more than enough motivation to do that. . .but what good would it do to quit and stay with him to only be rejected a few weeks later? Would it really be worth it?

Being with Duo made Wu Fei, for the first time in his life, comfortable. He wasn't sure why, but for some reason, he felt that the braided boy understood him in a way that others didn't or wouldn't. He knew the other boy to be strong. Every time he looked into the depths of those purple eyes, he could see his strength. . .he could also see through the mask that he was wearing. . .he could see the hurt and pain from a part of his life that he didn't want to remember or talk about.

Duo laid back and stared into the darkness. Who would have ever guessed that the God of Death wouldn't be able to sleep alone? He asked himself and turned onto his side. Part of him was tempted to sneak into Wu Fei's room and crawl in bed with the Chinese boy, but somehow, he had the feeling that Wu Fei wouldn't appreciate that. Instead he laid in bed, silently singing songs in attempts of lulling himself off to sleep.

I'm going to hell,
Who's coming with me?
Somebody, please help him.
He mimicked in a little girl's voice. It was a song that Heero had played for him a while ago, and it sort of stuck with him. He couldn't remember the name of the song, but he was for sure that the rapper's name was Eminem. As he came to this line, he tried to remember the rest of the lyrics, but for some reason he couldn't remember it. Forgetting that song, he remembered another one. . .

Your butt is mine
Gonna tell you right
Just show your face
In broad daylight
At this, he started laughing at himself. The next song was a little more upbeat and not as funny. Aside, he placed his own words into the lyrics, making him laugh even more. He laughed after each lyric, and wondered why that song suddenly popped into his mind.

Step Heero, we can have lots of fun.
Step Duo, there's so much we can do.
Step Trowa, please go away.
Step Quatre, I can give you more.
Step Wu, don't you know that the time has arrived?
Huh!
Singing this song brought forth another song that he always made fun of. He always claimed that it was Heero and Trowa's song. Heero's because of the lyrics, Trowa's because the singer was Latin too.

I can be your Heero.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
Damnit. Why did I have to start singing that one? He sat up straight in bed and tried to force the song from his mind. He didn't want to think about that right now. Thinking of it always reminded him of the fact that he was alone. All of a sudden, he heard someone step into his room.

"Wu-wu, is that you?" He asked aloud and waited for an answer. "I might not have piloted in a while, but I can still sense when someone is sneaking up on me." He informed and waited. Tired of the silence, he reached for the light. Before he could turn it on, he felt someone grab his wrist.

"What's the matter Maxwell? Don't you like being in the dark?"

"Damnit Wu Fei, why didn't you answer me?" He felt the Chinese boy sit on the edge of the bed.

"I've been thinking. . ." Wu Fei started, obviously trying to avoid Duo's question.

"About what?"

"About us." Duo stopped breathing at these words. "I think we should stop playing these games Duo." It was the first time he had ever heard his first name roll off Wu Fei's tongue, and in truth, he liked hearing it. Though he couldn't see well, he could feel that the speaking lips were only centimeters from his. "I want to put an end to our friendship." He whispered passionately.

"So do I." Duo agreed. The next instant, he felt Wu Fei's lips cover his own in a deep kiss. Duo lost himself in the gesture. It was everything he had expected. He lightly smooth Wu Fei's black hair. As he came to the rubber band, he released the shoulder length locks from its stronghold. His fingers ran through the silky hair as Wu Fei laid him back against the sheets and pillows. When their lips finally parted, both boys were breathless.

"Duo. . ." Wu Fei called between gasps. "I don't want to get hurt."

"I won't hurt you." The American assured and was rewarded another kiss. While lost in the kiss, Duo's hands started tugging the tucked shirt from the pants. There was a brief break as the shirt was removed and thrown somewhere to the left. His hands then set out to feel every muscle that his eyes were already familiar with.

Duo rolled over in bed and allowed his hand to roam in search of his late night lover. When he couldn't find him, he slowly opened one eye to find that he was in bed alone. Yawning, he sat up in bed and stretched. A smile pulled his lips as he thought about last night. Wondering where Wu Fei was, Duo climbed out of bed and pulled on his boxers. He walked over to the balcony and looked out toward the pond. Wu Fei wasn't there either. Silently scorning the Chinese boy, Duo finished getting dressed and pulled his hair back into a loose ponytail. If there was one thing he couldn't stand, it was waking up in bed alone after a night of great sex. That was something he was going to have to set straight with his new lover.

He stepped into the kitchen to find Wu Fei and Heero, starting breakfast with Trowa sitting at the counter. This day was already off to a good start. Not only did it mark the first day of the fall of the Great Wall, but the sunny whether was promising that a lot of work would be done. . .especially since now Trowa was back. Grinning his usual smirk, Duo entered the room and glanced over to Trowa.

"Enjoy your time off?" He asked in a lighthearted tone as he walked over to Wu Fei. Without waiting for an answer from Trowa, he slipped his arms around the Preventer's waist. He then planted a kiss fully on the other boy's lips. Heero stopped in his tracks as he noticed Duo's boldness. The Japanese boy wondered what had gotten into his braided friend. Duo was definitely feeling audacious this morning. Wu Fei's eyes widen at the touch. He couldn't think clearly as he stared into the relaxed features of the American.

"What was that all about Maxwell?" Wu Fei wondered once Duo pulled from him.

"We're going back to this Maxwell thing again?" Wu Fei appeared confused.

"What do you mean, 'going back'?" Duo stared deeply into the coal eyes. He couldn't help but question what was wrong. He wondered why Wu Fei was acting like this.

"If you think I'm going to act one way when we're alone and another in front of people, you can just forget it."

"What the hell are you talking about Maxwell?!?"

"You know what I'm talking about." Duo barked and glared at the other boy. When there was no kind of reaction, anger got the best of the American. He slammed his fist as hard as he couldn't into Wu Fei's jaw and left the room. Both Wu Fei and Heero appeared surprised by the action. Trowa remained stoic as he watched Duo leave.

"What was that all about?" Heero wondered and glanced over at Wu Fei.

"I honestly have no ideal." The Preventer answered as he lightly touched the place where he had been punched.

Duo slammed the door behind him and leaned against it. Tears spilled from his violet eyes. He still couldn't believe that Wu Fei acted the way he did. Of all people, he believed the Chinese boy to be the last person to ever act like that. His attention was diverted as there was a light knock on the door.

"Duo, are you okay?" Heero's voice emerged. Wiping his tears, Duo pushed himself to his feet and opened the door. He usually talked with Quatre about things like this, but the way he was feeling right now, Heero would be enough. Though it was rare for the Japanese boy to show comfort toward him, or suggest advice like the Arab did, at least he listened. He side stepped and allowed his friend into his room. Once inside, Duo closed the door back. "What's going on?"

"Last night, Wu Fei came into my room, and we had sex. I thought he was ending the chasing game. I thought I finally got through to him. . .but I guess he was just using me." Tears reappeared in his eyes. "I thought he was different from everyone else Heero. That's why I've wanted him for so long. I thought that as soon as I finally got through his wall, that. . .I should have known better." He slumped against the door. "True happiness belongs in fairy tales and movies. . .not real life. Especially for the God of Death." He bowed his head and closed his eyes tightly. Heero studied the grieving boy a moment before pulling him into a hug.

"You do deserve happiness Duo. . .and it is out there. Maybe it just wasn't in him." Duo hugged the stronger boy firmly.

"But I wanted it to be him." Heero lightly rubbed Duo's back. "He told me last night that he didn't want to get hurt. . .then he turns around and does it to me." Heero wanted to say something to make his friend stop hurting, but he wasn't sure if any words could do that. He hated to see Duo cry. Though it was tough to believe that Wu Fei would take the first step, Heero believed Duo. After all, Duo never lied before, why would he about this?

Wu Fei stared aimlessly at the wall. His hand had seem to have taken a mind of its own as it continued to wash the filth from the walls. He couldn't stop thinking about Duo. Ever since that morning, he's been painfully ignoring the Chinese boy. . .though there was no reasonable explanation. The only thing he could think of was his not staying the night with him. . .but Duo never got that upset over something that small and useless before. Asking Heero proved useless. The Japanese boy merely suggested that he should leave. At first, he was going to. . .but he found that he couldn't leave Duo. . .especially knowing that the braided boy was mad at him for no apparent reason.

"Wu-wu." Wu Fei turned around to face Duo as he appeared in the room. "Can I talk to you a moment?" There was regret in the violet eyes as he spoke. Wu Fei only nodded, not sure that he could trust his voice. "I'm sorry that I socked you. . .and for the outburst this morning. I guess my dream must have still been lingering in my mind."

"What dream?" Duo's cheeks turned red instantly as his gaze fell to the hard wooden floors.

"Let's just say that it included you and a hard on when I woke." Wu Fei was surprised at the statement, but not surprised at the same time. Duo stepped closer until he stood only a few feet from him. "Wu Fei. I really like you. . .more than just friends. I want to be more." The violet eyes looked up into his face in hope. "I've wanted to be more ever since we met, but I was always unsure about how you felt. Now, I have a good ideal about how you feel."

"You do?"

"You're still here, aren't you? Even after Heero told you to get lost. . . .You're afraid to get hurt. . .so am I. . .but if we don't take that chance, then we'll never know." Wu Fei studied the heart shaped face, wondering what to say. The two boys stared at each other a moment before Duo closed the gap and lightly kissed Wu Fei's lips. This time was different from the first as Wu Fei dropped the rag and wrapped his arms around Duo's petite frame. He crushed their bodies together and began to return the kiss.

"Duo, are you okay?" Wu Fei asked as he stepped into the room that the American was painting. All day Duo had been trying to avoid any type of contact with his friend. Presently, he kept his back to his guest and attempted to focus on the paint roller. Suddenly he felt arms wrap around his waist in a tight hug. "I didn't mean to act the way I did this morning. Please forgive me."

"Then why did you?"

"I've never had a real relationship before. . .and it scared me. I wasn't sure how to react. That's why I wasn't there when you woke up." Duo pulled from the embrace and turned to face the Chinese boy. "I never meant to hurt you. Give me a second chance."

"Are you going to act that way again?"

"I'll try not too; but there'll be times when I need time and space. Last night, I'll admit, I rushed. Now that I've thought about it, maybe we should proceed at a slower pace. . .that is if you still want to." Duo thought about this. "Last night meant a lot to me. . .I just moved a little quicker than I anticipated. The outcome was less than desirable. . .I can't stand to know that I've hurt you." A smile pulled at Duo's lips.

"Well, that just means you're going to have to make it up to me."

"How?" Duo placed a hand under his chin as if thinking hard about this.

"Mhmmm. . .we're talking public humiliation, neglect, attempt at making me look foolish, not to mention emotional and possible relationship scarring, and let's not forget. . ." His words were interrupted by a gentle kiss. When Wu Fei pulled from him, a pleased smile pulled the American's lips. "Maybe another one of those would settle things. . ." He teased, and Wu Fei leaned forward again, but Duo placed his index finger over the approaching lips. "Only this time, longer, deeper, and do it like you mean it." Wu Fei lightly grabbed Duo's wrist and pulled it from his path. With his free hand, he seized the side of Duo's neck and roughly pulled him closer. Before the American could react, his mouth was ambushed by Wu Fei's.

"Well, it's nice to see that the two of you have made up." Quatre informed with a smile as Duo and Wu Fei sat down at the dinner table next to each other. Earlier that day, after Quatre woke up, Duo had told his blonde friend everything that had happen.

"Yeah, well, we buried the hatch." Duo grinned and side glanced at the Chinese boy. "So, now that we got pass all the soap opera plots, we can get back to the original purpose of being here." The American announced as he looked from one friend to another. Suddenly, he noticed that Trowa wasn't there. "Where's Cyclops?" As if on cue, Trowa stepped into the dinning room with the main course. Duo laughed. "For a moment there, I thought you got clunked with another lighting cover."

"No. Maybe I should start wearing a hard hat though." Duo's eyes nearly bugged out. When he had made his statement, he was ready for a snide comment from the taller boy. Surprise was with him at the response.

"You mean all the hairspray you use isn't enough of a helmet?" Trowa only looked over at Duo. It wasn't even a glare or narrowed eyes. . .in fact, they seemed different somehow. "Nothing smart ass to say?"

"No." Trowa answered and sat next to Heero. Duo looked over at the Japanese boy, a little speechless to his boyfriend's new attitude. Heero knew that his friend was looking for an explanation, but he didn't have one and just slightly shrugged.

"Is this leading up to something?"

"No. By the way, the carpet upstairs has been replaced. . .and it's clean too."

"Already?" Wu Fei asked.

"Yeah. Me and Heero did it this morning after breakfast."

"Wow, you get conked, and you become a nice work alcoholic. . .we should have done it two days ago." Duo laughed, and waited for a retort. He still didn't believe that Trowa was giving up his cross two cents. However, Trowa didn't react, he only handed the potatoes to the American to dish out. "I think I'm dumbfounded." He waited for Trowa to reply, but there wasn't one. Duo wasn't the only one that was shocked at the silence. So were Wu Fei and Heero. It wasn't like Trowa to not have a come back or take a cheap shot at the braided boy. "Don't think I'm letting my guard down. I have a feeling that's what you're up to."

"Actually, I figured that for the next three weeks, it would be easier on both of us as well as Heero if we didn't bicker like children. Don't you agree?" The mysterious emeralds returned to violet.

"Umm. . .yeah." Even Heero was staring suspiciously at his lover. Seeing this, Duo made a mental note not to consider this as true just yet. If Heero was leery of it, then that was more than enough of a reason for him to be too.
