The Tie That Bonds Chapter 2 "So storks really do bring babies. The one that
delivered this one must have flown way off course somewhere."
Duo laughed as he leaned over the basket and made a face. The baby
started crying loudly. Hilde pushed her coworker from the basket and
picked up the child. She bounced it lightly and patted its back. "There, there. Mean old Duo won't scare you any
more with his big ugly face." She cooed softly. "Hey, I didn't scare it. It probably saw you."
"If that were true, then she wouldn't be laughing
now. Isn't that right? Yes it is. Just because Duo has a mean scary
face doesn't mean everyone does." She spoke in a childish voice
as she pulled the baby away and lightly rubbed her nose against the
infant one. The crying had evolved into laughter and gentle cooing.
"Did you make a list of the baby's needs yet?" Hilde asked
as she looked up at Trowa. The Latin was sitting in a nearby chair,
lightly scratching Sheba's head. The dog sat obediently by his side,
watching the baby intently. "Duo, grab some paper and a pencil. We'll make
a list." "Hey, it's Trowa's baby. Shouldn't he do it?"
Before another argument could break out, Trowa pushed out of his chair
and searched for a notebook and pencil. Once ready, Hilde rambled
off everything that they needed to buy, as far as essentials go. Ten
minutes later, the list was complete. "Let's see. . .I think that's everything."
She looked over Trowa's shoulder to reread what she had already listed.
"Yeah, that's everything." "You forgot a kitchen sink." Duo mocked. "Damn,
I don't even know what half of that is for." "Well, you don't need to know until you have kids.
Heaven forbid that from happening. One of you is enough." "Hey!" "What about a crib, and stuff like that? Don't
we need that too?" Trowa asked, trying to avoid another fight.
"Thanks Hilde." "No problem. No sense in buying the big stuff when
you don't really know how long you're going to have little Amelia
here." She smiled down at the child, and Trowa thought about
what he had said to Heero about getting attached. "Well, we should
go. I have to be at my mom's in a couple of hours. We should get this
done before then." They left the house and headed for the mini
van parked in front. Hilde claimed that it would be better if they
used her mom's mini van since there was a car seat in it. Hilde demonstrated
the proper way to place a child in the seat, with Trowa watching attentively.
"I appreciate you taking time out of your vacation
to help." "No problem. That's what friends are for. Besides,
we'll still have two weeks left before we have to head back home.
. .right Duo?" "Yeah. I can't believe you and Heero are going
to try to take care of this kid." Duo stated as he followed behind
Hilde and Trowa. "It's just for a little while, until the mother
comes back." "How will you know who it's mother is?" "The note said that we'd be able to tell because
of the locket." "Is anyone else thinking 'Annie' here?" "Duo!" "Well, I feel sorry for the kid with the two of
you watching over her, she'll probably come out. . .like you. Oh,
man! What was that kid's mother thinking?" "Her mind was probably on her daughter's safety.
I wouldn't trust anyone else to watch over my kid." Hilde informed
as she slid into the driver's seat, and Trowa took the front passenger
side; leaving Duo to the back next to the baby. "What about me?" "Duo, you have problems taking care of yourself."
"I do not. . .and why do I have to sit back here?"
"Because little kids aren't allowed to sit in the
front." "Ha. Ha. That was so lame." "Well, you asked for it." "'Well you ask for it.'" Duo mocked as he
leaned forward between the two seats. "So what's the kid's last
name going to be? I mean, she might get sick and have to go to a doctor.
So is it going to be Barton or Yuy?" "Neither. Both would stick out too much."
"So what's it going to be?" "Lowe." "Lowe? Where did that come from?" Duo's question
went unanswered. Trowa looked down at his rear view mirror. There
was a black Camaro that seemed to be following them. Trowa tried to
notice the driver, but the windows were tinted and wouldn't even allow
silhouettes. "Hey, you know, this kid is going to seriously cut
down on your nookie time." Duo chuckled, catching part of Trowa's
attention. "Duo! Is that all you think about?" Hilde
scolded. Though Trowa didn't respond, he knew the braided boy to be
right. "I'm not the only one. . .right Trowa?" The
Latin avoided making eye contact with his comrade. "WHOA!! This
kid just self destructed back here!" The American groaned loudly
and Hilde started laughing. "Oh, man. Someone open a window.
What'd you feed this kid? Phew!" Trowa kept his eye on the Camaro;
as they pulled into a parking lot of a grocery store, the black car
continued down the street. Maybe it wasn't following them after all.
Perhaps he was just being paranoid. . .then again, he was never wrong
about something like that before. Just because they drove pass this
entrance didn't mean they couldn't go to the next. "Trowa, are you okay?" Hilde questioned as
she pulled into an available space. "Fine." He assured and looked back at Amelia.
"I'm not fine. Let me out of here." Duo tugged
at the door, trying to open it, but it was locked. "Damn child
proof doors. Open it Hilde! Hurry, my eyes are burning!" "It's not that bad. . .and definitely no worse
than you." She chuckled and unlocked the door for the braided
boy. The aroma, however, was fairly foul. They headed inside the store
and straight for the baby isle. Hilde scrambled to collect everything
she needed to change the crying baby and headed straight for the ladies'
room. Trowa waited just outside the door as the helpful friend disappeared
inside. He leaned against the wall next to the door and before
long, began receiving stares from customers as they passed. A couple
of woman that looked ready to go in, declined as they noticed him
standing there. Just to ease their minds, Trowa stepped away and started
pacing the isle. Finally Hilde emerged from the rest room with a fresher
Amelia. "There we go. All clean and smelling good."
She slightly bounced the baby before turning to Trowa. "You know,
it would do her good if you hold her some. I can't always be around,
and she needs to get use to you." "I've never held a baby before." "First time for everything." She proceeded
to tell him how to position his arms. When he had it right, she tenderly
placed the child in his hold. "See, that's not so bad, now is
it?" Trowa looked down at the innocent face and sympathized with
her. She reached to grab his bangs. Hilde laughed as Trowa pulled
away at the last second. "I think she likes you." "Either that, or she sees you as a tug toy."
Duo snickered as he approached with a cart. He leaned on the handle
and smiled brightly as Hilde threw the excess baby material into the
buggy. "Awwww. . .look at mama Trowa." The Latin looked
up and glared at Duo for the comment. "I guess, that makes you auntie Duo." As Trowa
said this, the baby managed to catch the end of his bang and began
tugging harshly. . . .a little too harshly for a baby. "She must not like the ideal of Duo as a family
member." Hilde mused as Trowa freed his hair from the little
grip. "Who would like it?" He asked, while making
a mental note to fix the bang problem as soon as they got home. "What is this? Pick on me day?" Duo whined
and they headed back to the baby isle to finish their shopping. "That's because you're an easy target." Trowa
ignored their verbal brawl and focused more on the child. As he stared
down into the little face, he noticed that Amelia had colbat eyes
extremely close to that of Heero's. "Trowa, are you listening?"
He looked up from the baby to face Hilde. ". . .hn?. . ." A smile passed over a pair
of knowing lips. "Is someone getting attached?" She teased
and Trowa averted his eyes. "See, babies are addictive once you
have one of your own." "It's not mine." Trowa corrected. "The
mother could be back anytime to claim it." "Will you cry?" Duo mocked and Hilde slapped
his arm. "Look, what I was saying is that until the mother
does come, you're going to have to do something with Sheba. Dogs tend
to get jealous when they have to share attention with babies. The
two of you are barely going to have time alone together, let alone
to give Sheba the attention she's use to." Trowa remained silent
as he thought about this. Sheba was originally his dog, but Heero
had grown fond of her, and she became theirs. He didn't really want
to push the Doberman away for a child that wasn't even theirs, let
alone might not stay with them for long. He and Heero had raised Sheba
for the pass two years, since she was a pup. "You can always
place her in a kennel for the time being. I have a friend that works
at one on the other side of town. I can assure you that they'll take
good care of her." "I'll keep that in mind." Trowa answered swiftly. "I'll talk to Heero, and see what he says." He added once he noticed the accusing look in Hilde's eyes.
