Something to Talk About

Part 14

Duo shook his head in shame for his friend as he looked down at the third scratch that Heero had placed on the green pool table. Knowing that Heero wasn't in the best of moods right now, the American tried to hold in his jokes and laughter. However, he couldn't.

"Keep that up buddy, and they'll demand that you pay for the table." Duo chuckled, but stopped as he noticed the glare in the colbat eyes. "Look, if you're still fuming over Trowa, just go talk to him."

"I'm not fuming over Trowa." Heero sneered as he tried his shot again.

"Yeah, but you haven't been around him for three weeks Heero. That's a lot for the two of you. What the hell did you fight about that caused this? I mean the most I've ever seen you guys mad at each other was like for three seconds."

"We didn't fight."

"Then what happened?" Heero remained silent as he tried again. Since his mind wasn't on the cue ball right now, he missed the ball he was aiming for completely. "Look, just tell me what happened. You'll feel a lot better about it."

"Why? So you can blab it to everyone you know?"

"I don't blab. I swear I won't tell a soul. Whatever this is, it's big. It has to be if you're not talking to each other." Heero returned to his thoughts. Though Duo was a good friend, Heero didn't like confiding in him. The only one he could ever talk openly with was Trowa. With the separation, he was starting to understand why Trowa acted the way he did that day. The fact was clear that if they didn't have each other, they didn't really have anyone they could talk with about things that were bothering them.
The pass few weeks were so strange for him that he often felt as if he had stepped into someone else's life. The emptiness that he thought he had filled after the war was starting to return; since it was Trowa that filled it the first time. The last time he talked to the Latin, he told him what he thought about them. . .and what they should do. It was Trowa that got scared, so he stepped back. It had been hard for him. There were countless times that he wanted to call Trowa, or go visit him, but forced himself not to.

It hurt to be away from him. . .it hurt more than when he left Aya. Since that day, simple things had changed in his life. . .things that seemed trivial before. Such as the fact that he was finding it harder to wake up each morning. As of lately, he found that he had hit the snooze button at least three times before actually getting up. Food seemed expendable; as did work. Somehow, he managed to drag himself from the apartment everyday to go to work, and to the bar to shoot pool with Duo like he was now.

"Heero." He looked up at the sound of his name and was greeted by a pair of violet eyes that held a seriousness that he didn't know they could accomplish. "Go talk to him. I'm sure the two of you can work it out, whatever it is. You're Heero and Trowa for Pete's sake. Take away one and all you have left is two lonely robots." Heero stared into the depths of the violet eyes as he realized what Duo was saying. Without another word spoken, he laid his pool stick on the table and left the bar.

"Are you all right?" Ken asked as he looked over at Trowa, who was sitting across the table from him. Trowa's green eyes were focused on the table top, and didn't seem to have noticed that Ken had said anything. Confused, and slightly worried, Ken snapped his fingers and the trance was broken. Seeing the question in his eyes, Trowa realized that he had been dazing again.

"What were you saying?"

"Trowa, are you feeling okay? You've been distant all day."

"My mind just won't stay still."

"Do you want to talk about it?" The Latin shook his head. He didn't feel that comfortable with Ken just yet to talk about this. It's been three weeks since he had kissed Heero. Since then, the Japanese man sort of backed off, as if giving him time to think about the situation. . .which Trowa had been doing non stop. In those days, he found that he missed Heero like crazy. He couldn't eat, nor sleep. He's been messing up at work, and his mind was never where he wanted it. It just didn't seem right not going to Heero's apartment, or coming home and finding his own empty. He wasn't sure how long Heero was planning to make himself scarce, but he wished that it would end soon. Without him there, Trowa was starting to feel as lonely as he did when he was with the mercenaries. Though Ken was often great company, he wasn't Heero. "Look, maybe we should try this another time." Ken broke through his thoughts. "Obviously, you need time alone. . .or maybe you should call and talk with Heero."

"I'm sorry." Trowa spoke softly as he couldn't bring himself to look Ken in the eye.

"Hey, it's okay. Give me a call when you're ready to try again." Trowa nodded as the older man stood and left the table. Trowa remained sitting and drinking his coffee, still thinking of Heero.

Part of him wanted to advance their relationship. After all, they've been practically boyfriends for the pass five years. . .the only difference was the lack of sex. Their friendship was strong. Everyone else he ever dated, never started with friends. It just jumped into a full fledged relationship. On the other hand, going any further ran the risk of losing the friendship as well as Heero altogether. It was no secret that all of Trowa's relationships in the past have failed. Ultimately, ending with him never seeing the person again. He didn't want that with Heero. Compared to how he was feeling after only three days. . .he wouldn't be able to live the rest of his life without the Japanese man.

Reaching into his wallet, he pulled out enough money to pay for his and Ken's coffee. Laying the money on the table, he pushed from the booth and headed toward the exit. The afternoon sunshine had given way to thunder storm. With his apartment only four blocks away, he had walked to meet Ken at the cafe. Now, with the current rain, he found himself wishing that he would have drove. . .or at least a jacket. As he got started, the rain didn't seem to bother him. In truth, he forgot that it was even raining, as he wondered what Heero was doing. He was so deep in thought about the colbat eyed man that he didn't realize just how cold the rain was beating on him. . .let alone when a truck sped by, sharing a extra spray of the freezing water.

By the time that he reached his apartment, he was soaked to the bone and feeling worse than he had before he left. He was shocked as he walked into the apartment to find Heero sitting on the couch with Freesia curled in his lap sleeping. The colbat eyes were never so inviting. He stood in the hallway, slightly shivering from the cold as he stared at the man sitting in his living room.

"Are you going to stand there and freeze, or are you going to get out of those wet clothes?" Heero asked as he slid the cat from his lap. "I'll run a warm bath for you." He assured and headed toward the bathroom. Trowa followed him into the room, as a comfortable silence fell between them. Even without exchanging words, both men felt that everything between them was calm and settled. All that was left was to voice these words. He watched as Heero adjusted the temperature of the water as it gathered in the bath tub. When he stood and turned to face Trowa, he was little surprised that the Latin was still in the drenched clothes.

As if sensing the thoughts. Trowa removed his turtleneck and dropped it to the floor. He then worked on removing his jeans. As he did, Heero seized his shirt and walked over to the sink. He began wringing out the excess water. After that, he worked on the jeans and Trowa slid into the warm running water. Trowa watched as Heero hung the clothes on the back of the door before leaving. Without needing to ask, he knew the Japanese man was going to take care of the trail of puddles leading from the hall to the bathroom.

Sighing in relief, he sank further into the depths of the warmth. For some reason, having Heero close brought forth a feeling of sheer comfort. . .and sleepiness that he hadn't experienced since the last time he saw his friend. Just as he began to lull into the space between being awake and asleep, he was pulled from it by Heero stepping back into the bathroom to take care of the last bit of water. Said task completed, Heero looked up at the Latin.

"Feeling better?"

"Yeah." Heero sat on the edge of tub and stared into the deep green eyes. They sat in silence, staring at each other. Knowing what they wanted to say, but feared to say it. Neither of them wanted to hurt their friendship in any way. Seeing the mixed and confused emotions clouding Trowa, Heero broke the silence.

"I can't stand not having you around. You know how I feel about this Trowa, but if you just want to remain friends, I'm okay with it."

"Are you sure?"

"I'd rather have you as a friend than not at all. All I want to know is how much this is going to affect our friendship?" Trowa looked down at the water as he pondered this. "I mean, are you going to be afraid to touch me the way you used to without thinking I'm taking it the wrong way?"

"I know neither of us can truly forget about what happened and what we really feel about each other. Even if we both get started in separate relationships, in the back of our minds, we'll be thinking about this. I don't know how it's going to affect everything." Heero reached down and lightly pushed the matted bangs from Trowa's face. "In a way, I still just want to be friends. . .but I also want to be with you."

"Do you need more time?"

"Don't leave me again Heero."

"I wasn't talking about that. I'm sorry I did that to you. . .I meant, do you need time to think about it instead of talking?" Trowa nodded and Heero slid off the edge of the tub to kneel on the tile. He tenderly cupped Trowa's chin and brought his face to eye level. "No matter what ends up happening between us Trowa, I will be here for you." With that, he pulled the taller boy into a comforting hug.
