I'll Do Anything

Part 8

Trowa glanced across the table to his lover. Quatre was engrossed in a conversation with Desdemona. If one didn't know any better, they could have sworn that the younger brother's full attention was focused on his sister. However, while he spoke cheerfully to his older sibling, his foot was gently caressing the Latin's leg. Thankfully, both men concealed the events that were taking place under the white table cloth.

"So, Quatre, where are your other two friends?" Kanissa asked suddenly as the meal was being served. Curious, Quatre looked around the table. He noticed for the first time that Duo and Wu Fei were both missing. Not only them, but Novia was gone as well. He looked back at his sister. The gleam in her eyes told that she wasn't happy with the fact that Wu Fei and her daughter were missing at the same time. He opened his mouth to answer when Novia entered and sat in her seat next to Sammy.

"Sorry I'm late." Novia apologized and one of the servants pushed in her chair. Kanissa glanced toward the door as if waiting for Wu Fei to show up.

"Please excuse me." Quatre said suddenly and began to stand.

"Where are you going?" Sammy asked and all attention turned to the blonde.

"I'll go find them." Trowa offered.

"Find who?" Novia wondered then looked around the table for the empty chairs. "Oh, Wu Fei and Duo? I saw them running toward the garden a few minutes ago." Heero nearly choked on his water, but hid it. What was Wu Fei doing with Duo in the garden? There was only one reason that Duo ever went there. As if on cue, the two absent men appeared and took their seats.

Heero watched the American out the corner of his eye. Duo didn't seem as energetic this morning as last night. Maybe Wu Fei was the cause of the unusual behavior. Then again Duo wasn't exactly a morning person. He didn't fully wake up until around noon. A quick glance at Wu Fei proved that the China man wasn't acting any different than he normally did. If anything was going on between the two, Heero was going to find out about it, and if what he thinks is happening, was. . . . . .the Chinese Preventer won't be punching in next Monday morning.

"I guess you were right." Quatre whispered as he held Trowa closer to him. "I should have never mingled with this."

"You were only trying to help."

"But all I'm doing is torturing Duo." He looked over at his American friend. Duo was sitting at one of the tables alone. After the wedding rehearsal that day they gathered in the back yard the same evening for a pretend reception. Everyone was having a great time talking, dancing, and eating. Everyone except Duo. The braided man was ripping a napkin into smaller pieces. He had danced with so many people that night, he needed a rest, however resting was boring when done alone.

"The week isn't over yet." Trowa said softly, his green eyes seemed to be fixed on something. Quatre turned slightly to see that Heero and Relena were arguing again. The vice foreign minister yelled something at her bodyguard, and stormed away. Heero made no movement to follow her.

"You think there's still a chance?"

"One must never give up until the end." Quatre smiled.

"Maybe you should go talk to Heero." He offered and turned back to his lover.

"You're one step behind little one." Trowa assured. Confused, the Arab looked back to see Catherine approaching the Japanese guest.

"Catherine? You brought her into this?"

"No, but she seems to have picked up what we were doing." Quatre turned back to face Trowa. "She can be quite convincing at times."

"And if words don't work, I hear she has a good right hook." Trowa glared at the blonde. The subject was still a little touchy for him. "I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. Forgive me?" Quatre pleaded and lightly brushed their lips together.

"Hey, long time." Catherine greeted as she approached Heero.

"Hi Catherine."

"You look really depressing sitting here by yourself. Would you like to dance?" Heero looked up at her. "I heard you have some really smooth moves. Why not show them off?" Without waiting for an answer, she seized his wrist and pulled him to his feet.

"Catherine. . ."

"Look, it's just dancing. It's not like I'm asking you to marry me." She teased and pulled him onto the dance floor. "Relax. If Relena shows up, I'll tell her that I kidnapped you." Heero half heartedly fulfilled the request. It was while he was dancing that he noticed Duo sitting alone. Though he tried not to, he couldn't help but watch him. Heero had noticed earlier that night that his ex was as energetic as usual. He had so many dance partners and moved about the area so quickly that Heero had a hard time keeping track of him. In truth, he did somehow managed to take note of where Duo was. It was when he and Relena started arguing that he completely lost the American. "Maybe you should go ask him."

". . .hn?. . ."

"I'm sure Duo would want to dance."

"Why not go ask him yourself?"

"Something tells me he's looking for just the right partner."

"What makes you say that?"

"Call it a hunch." Catherine giggled and winked at him. Heero's eyes averted back to the auburn haired man. "He didn't really come with someone either. Must be tough to be alone when it's supposed to be a fulfilled night." Heero looked back at Catherine. "It's just a dance. Doesn't mean anything."

". . .hn. . ."

"Do you want me to go ask him for you?" Catherine asked bluntly. "Are you afraid to ask him?" Their eyes locked for a moment and nothing more needed to be said. "Go on, I don't mind." She pulled from him and pushed him in the direction of Duo. "Have some fun." When she realized that he didn't take another step, she grabbed his hand and dragged him to the lonely figure. "Hi Duo." She called happily. Violet eyes turned toward her.

"Hey Catherine." Duo answered, then noticed who was standing behind her.

"This is Heero. I'm sure you remember him. He wants to dance with you, but he's feeling a little shy right now. So show him he has nothing to be shy about." With that, she seized Duo's hand and pulled him to his feet. She then connected the two hands she was holding and pushed them onto the dance floor. As their finger tips touched, Duo felt his heart race.

"Are you sure you're not a Gundam pilot?" Sammy asked and studied Wu Fei closely. The boy was sitting on one of the amps swinging his legs. "Cuz, you know if you are, you can tell me. I can keep a secret." Wu Fei stared at the boy a moment.

"How old are you?"

"I'll be seven next month."

"You really believe that I'm a pilot?" Sammy nodded. "You know, Heero is a lot stronger than I am, do you think he is too?" Wu Fei asked and nodded toward the man arguing with Relena. "His muscles are twice the size of your head."

"No, he can't be a pilot. You have to be more than just strong to be a pilot."

"Really?"

"Yeah, you have to be smart too. People who are too strong, like him, are probably not too smart. And you have to be fast too. All those muscles must slow him down a lot."

"You don't say?" Wu Fei laughed at the boy's reasoning.

"Yeah, and my dad's cousin was a captain of a ship. . .can you keep a secret?" Wu Fei nodded and Sammy motioned for him to come closer. "My dad's cousin was captain of Mr. Treize Khushrenada's ship. And he told us that one time when he was sailing with Mr. Khushrenada that a Gundam attacked the ship. He said that he saw a Chinese boy jump from the Gundam cockpit and duel with Mr. Khushrenada."

"That's enough Sammy." Novia assured as she stepped up behind her brother. "I'm sure Wu Fei doesn't want to hear tall tales."

"But it's true!" Sammy insisted.

"Sure it is. Mother is looking for you. She's in the kitchen." Novia pointed toward the mansion and Sammy started toward the appointed direction.

"Mr. Chang, remember to keep it a secret."

"I will Sammy."

"I'm sorry Wu Fei."

"What for?"

"Our cousin probably never saw a Gundam before, let alone a pilot." Wu Fei chuckled. "Our cousin was a drunk. He did use to be an Oz solider, but quit shortly after supposedly seeing the pilot. . .He was a drunk. No one believes he did see one."

"What's so unbelievable about it?"

"Come on, who would think that a boy would pilot a Gundam. My grandfather on dad's side used to be a soldier. He did really see a Gundam and lost both his legs and left arm during the battle. He said that the pilot must have had years of training in order to fight the way he had. So the ideal of the pilot being a boy is just plain silly." A small silence descended the two as Wu Fei changed the song. "Would you like to dance?"

"Not really."

"Don't you like to dance?" Novia asked as she sat on one of the amps. Wu Fei shook his head as he searched through Quatre's selection of music. He finally found the song that Trowa was telling him about. He checked the number of the track, then turned his attention back to the table that Duo was sitting at. Surprisingly, Duo was no longer sitting there. He scanned the area to find him and Heero near the edge of the dance floor.

He watched the two of them for a moment. They seemed nervous about being together. Well, he can fix that. As the song that was being played ended, he turned on a more upbeat one. He then turned to face Novia.

"Could you do me a favor?" He asked causally. Novia's blue eyes widen slightly.

"Sure." She answered almost too quickly. Wu Fei smiled at her nervousness and reached into the box sitting behind the amp where she was perched. He leaned on the amp next to her and handed her some medallions with numbers on them.

"Quatre wanted to have a dance contest, just for a little fun. Would you mind passing them out for me since I can't leave from behind here?"

"No problem."

"You can start over there." He stated, pointing at Heero and Duo. "Make sure you give them a medallion, even if they resist." Novia hopped off the amp and started to complete her task. She barely took a step when Wu Fei lightly snatched her arm and pulled her back a little. "Thanks Novia."

"You're welcome." Smiling widely, she walked over to Heero and Duo.

Duo couldn't bare to look in the colbat eyes. He was too afraid of the criticism that may lurk in them. He silently scolded himself for allowing Catherine to do this to him. But then again, Heero wasn't really pulling away from him. Maybe what Catherine said was true. What if Heero really did still have feelings for him, but didn't want to risk getting hurt again? Maybe Relena was playing a big part in his insecurity. Then again, maybe Duo had too much champagne tonight and his mind wasn't working properly.

Heero tried his best not to stare at his dancing partner, but couldn't help it. Duo was just too beautiful to ignore. Having him so close, and yet so far away was tearing him apart. He wondered if Duo even wanted to be dancing with him. He wasn't even looking at him. The big violet eyes were downcast, and it upset Heero that he couldn't see them. Why didn't he resist when Catherine dragged him over to the American? He was a lot stronger than she was, it wouldn't have been difficult. He should have retaliated. Should have stood still or opposed the ideal, but he wanted too badly to be with Duo.

"Here you go." Novia interrupted each of their thoughts and slipped something over their head. "Dance contest will begin shortly." She smiled and headed to the next couple. Duo and Heero both looked down at the red medallion around their neck. They were couple number 12.

"Did you want to be in the competition?" Duo wondered as he ran his index finger along the number."
"Did we have a choice?" Heero answered.

"The direct approach. Why didn't we think of that?" Quatre wondered aloud as he noticed Heero and Duo.

"Because you like to be sneaky." Trowa answered.

"I'm not sneaky. I'm crafty." Quatre chuckled. "Looks like it's time for part two." Just as he said this, Novia appeared and handed Trowa two medallions with the number 7 on them.

"Uncle Quatre," Novia started before leaving.

"Yes?"

"Is Wu Fei. . .I mean your other friends. . ." She nodded toward Heero and Duo. "I guess what I want to ask is. . ."

"Wu Fei isn't like that." Trowa interrupted, knowing what she was wanting to ask.

"Then you mean. . ." Trowa nodded. "Thanks." She called and bounced over to the next couple.

"Are you encouraging my niece to pursue Wu Fei?" Quatre's jaw slightly dropped in surprise as Trowa slipped the medallion over his head.

"No."

"I think you are." Quatre teased. "I think you're trying to play matchmaker."

"No, I'm not."

"I think you are Trowa. You have a sneaky look in your eyes. I can see it."

"That's not sneaky you're seeing."

"Then what is it?"

"Yearning." Quatre couldn't help but laugh.
