International Relations Chapter: IIPyrotechnic USSR
"The Russians arent very receptive to the nuclear reduction parameters in the START Treaties." Quatre laughed lightly, one arm moving in a windshield wiper-like imitation as he erased the board in Trowas classroom. The teacher was rambling about the history of disarmament policies in the United Nations, and the two were getting along well, this afternoon. "Thats because theyve worked their country into the dirt to get as many weapons as possible without outlawing matches." Trowa chuckled at his students sardonic sense of humor, though the sound stopped abruptly as his green eyes fell on the exposed, pale skin of the boys forearm, his black sleeve falling back as he erased the board to reveal dozens of angry red cuts and jagged scars. The teacher swore under his breath, crossing the distance between them and snatching the boys arm, pulling his sleeve up to his elbow. "Quatre, what is this?" he demanded, voice quiet and almost angry. The blonde pulled away, quickly covering the marks with his sleeve and turning away from his friend. "Its nothing. Dont worry about it." The two stood in silence for a long while before Trowa broke the hush, moving to the younger boy and pulling him into an awkward embrace. "It is something. What did you do that with?" he asked softly, and Quatre replied reluctantly into the tall mans chest. "Razor blade." The teacher nodded. Only something that sharp could have left the atrocious marks he had seen engraved in the boys flesh. "Why did you do it?" Quatre fell limp in Trowas strong arms, laying his head to the mans chest and closing his eyes. "I wanted to focus on something other than the pain." +++ Trowa sighed as he lay back on his couch, the television on in the background. He wasnt really watching it, however. He was more concerned with the idle thoughts troubling him. Trowa was thinking about scared blue eyes and the jagged scars that covered those thin, delicate wrists. <Ring, ring> The teacher reached behind himself idly, fumbling for the cordless, and he answered it as if through a daze. "Hello?" "Mr. Barton? I need your help " Trowa bolted upright, eyes narrowing in concern. "Quatre?! Whats going on? Where are you?" The blondes soft, terror-laced voice sent a jolt of fear through the man and he grit his teeth against it. "They wont leave me alone and I think I might have cut too deeply. It wont stop bleeding Im scared " "Calm down, Quat. Tell me where you are." "Im at a rave In the bathroom. I think I might have taken too much E." Trowa sighed, shaking his head. "Quat, I need an address." "Rostenos Church. Off of Main Street." Trowa was already up and throwing his jacket on. "Stay right where you are. Im coming to get you." +++ TBC. During the Cold War, the United States held the advantage over the Soviet Union for the first few years. American military and technological advances had been proven superior after the bombings of the Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the results of the American-led Manhattan Project. The Soviets and Americans entered into a fear and nationalism "arms race," each building up their arsenals and accumulating as many weaponsmostly nuclearas possible. It wouldnt be until the Nixon Administration of the late 1960s that the first attempts at détente and disarmament would occur; The Strategic Arms Limitation Talk (SALT) treaties and subsequent Strategic and Tactical Arms Reduction Treaties (START) would set "ceilings"limitsand reduction mutual reduction parameters for both the Soviet Union and the United States. *As a side-note: so many historians today focus on Nixons domestic flawsWatergateinstead of the foreign policy (Ha! Its back!) advances that he made. Nixon was the first US president since before the conversion of China to communism to visit the Far Eastern country, despite his well-publicized hatred of the nation. He also did wonders for lessening tensions between the United States and Soviet premier Breshnev. Cmon, whose your favorite president? -Jack Switchblade |
