AN: Well this chap is a chance for Duo and Heero to have some fun without it ending badly. About damn time, ne? I mean, 1st movie, the party, and then the 2nd movie... They were long over-due. This chap is comedy, some innuendo-ing, and a little bit of cruelty(but only to a character who really deserved it) and is fun to read. I think you'll like it. ^___^

SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:

CHAPTER 41: PAINFULL FAREWELL

It had been a month. The moon had become full and was now waning with each passing night. Winter was fast approaching, large, deep gray clouds threatening to rain but seemingly unable to follow through as they passed by overhead.

Heero was sick of this. He waited and watched as Duo left the bed and got dressed in his hastily shed clothing. After dressing himself, he braided his hair for him, loving playing with the silken strands, and then walked him to the door. Once there, he kissed Duo passionately, trying to quell the nerves that were making his stomach flip flop so Duo wouldn’t sense it and worry. Wouldn’t suspect.

Duo smiled up at him when they parted. "Don’t be so nervous. I'll be back soon, Hee-kun."

Heero smiled as he nodded. "Ah. I'll be here."

Duo flashed his best grin and then headed out the door.

Heero waited for a moment until he heard the engine start and become distant from the house. He then hastily put on his shoes and left the warmth of the house to Wufei who was in his room. He got onto his bike and headed down the road as well. 'What's that saying about Mohammed and the mountain?' He wondered idly. He also wondered if what he was about to do was wrong. 'I can stop asking myself that. I know the answer. I just don't want to admit it.' He got to the gate whose chain was still swinging after being draped through the groove that locked it in place. He quickly opened it and rode out, closing it behind himself and heading down the road. He loved Duo with all his heart, but he wanted to know what it was like to hunt. He HAD to know. He wanted Duo to trust him.

And Duo couldn't do that while he was hiding from him. 'Quatre said that Duo wasn't shy around him anymore because he had seen him hunt already. I hope this works. And, frankly, I'm tired of waiting.'

He followed the taillights at a distance, thankful that, for some odd reason, Duo could not sense him. When they turned onto the freeway, headed South, Heero figured that he was heading for San Louis.

He pulled onto the freeway and got on behind a car behind Duo's. 'I hope this isn't a bad idea.'

* * *

Duo walked into the alleyway, calling the man behind him, silently commanding him to follow. He had more than a slight headache and was very hungry, so when he found the man he was more than happy with the aura he had to present.

The man had been looking for a fix, a heroine fix to be exact, when Duo had seen his aura. Dark red. Wisps of burgundy.

When the man followed him into the dimly lit alleyway on the nearly deserted street, Duo covered his mouth with his hand and drew him back to the end even as the man tried to struggle, pushing him against a wall. He stared into his eyes. 'Just as I thought.' He read what was there.

The man, if he could be called one, had killed once and was married to a woman with three children. Two daughters, one son, all under the age of reason. And he had touched each in the way a parent should never touch a child. And he had done it before.

His vision became red as Duo felt a rage he had been suppressing for over a month. It quickly took over and he let his anger and hurt for the things his own father had done surface to dictate him as if he were nothing more than a marionette. "Do you know what is going to happen to you?" He asked the man menacingly.

The man shook his head as fear played in his eyes.

Duo smirked despite himself, even as things became a little hazy like a dream. Or nightmare. "I'm going to kill you. Slowly. And painfully." Keeping a firm hold over the man's mouth, he emphasized his point by snapping the man's wrist like a twig. He smirked wider as the man let out a scream into his palm. "Do you know what happens to children who's only mistake was to trust people like you? Nothing is ever the same for them. Everything changes and it is all harsh and horrible. They never look at people the same way. You were supposed to be a father to them. What you did_" He snapped his other wrist, muffling the scream. "_hurt them. And you did it, knowing it would." Though he felt ill by what he was doing, Duo found he couldn't stop, as if he were caught up in a dream from which he could not awaken. "You were supposed to be a father. Not a predator. They were supposed to go to you for safety. Parents are shelter for a child. What you did took that from them. You betrayed their trust and have wounded it for others."

He brought a knee into the man's abdomen. Hard.

The man went limp as his eyes began to slide closed.

"Oh no, I don't think so." Duo slapped him to keep him conscious.

When the man's eyes snapped open again, he tried to speak but Duo cut him off.

"Shut up, Papa." He hissed. He didn't even notice what he had called him. "You're killing the moment." He smacked him again and again until his rage cooled somewhat. Then, his fangs long with adrenaline, anger and hunger, he bit savagely into the man's neck, deliberately missing the artery to draw out the death. The man tried to scream again, but Duo had replaced his hand over his mouth, silencing him. ‘"No noise. Isn't that what you always told them? 'No noise'? 'Keep quiet'. 'Don't tell mommy'. You must now remain silent as one takes something dear to you. 'Keep quiet, Dear, it's almost over'."’ He crushed the memories of his father and focussed on the moment, the life he was draining from the horrible man not fit to live.

Once the man was dead, he released his neck, closing the wounds with a drop of blood, not wanting to touch the repugnant specimen of humanity any more than he had to, and let him fall. He gazed down on his blank face for a moment. He felt numb and his insides were shaking harshly. 'I can't believe I just did that. He DESERVED it!' He argued with himself. 'Even so, I should not let my rage effect my hunting. I might slip up. God, I feel dirty.' He shoved his hands in his pockets before heading out of the alleyway.

*

Heero felt ill as he watched the goings on from the other side of the street, crouched behind a few bushes that had been planted in a cement flower bed on the sidewalk. He could make out Duo's lips moving and see the rage plain on his features just barely in the soft, yellow light that shone down to reveal the harsh things happening in the alleyway. Had one not been peering into the alleyway, they would never have seen what was going down. He nearly threw up when he saw Duo snap the man's wrist and heard a keening wail muffled by Duo's other hand, barely audible. 'God. Is that Duo?' He watched, unable to look away despite his desire to do so.

He had always known that Duo killed to live, had heard it from Duo himself, honest as he was. But he had never pictured it. He had refrained from doing so as if the very thought would be too much. He knew it would be bad. He had blocked out the truth in what Duo was and what he did to survive so he did not have to think on it. Curiosity made him follow Duo to see if it really was so brutal and that was why he could not imagine it.

But nothing could have prepared him for what he saw at that moment. The reality of it all hit him and he wished he had not come.

Duo was hissing something at the man and then he snapped the other wrist, again muffling the cry of pain. After a moment of speaking, Duo kneed the man in the stomach and then slapped him to keep him awake. He slapped him a few more times and then Heero's eyes widened as he saw him bite into the man's neck.

He watched, transfixed as the man tried to scream again only to stop abruptly and become dazed and frightened looking as he struggled for a few seconds before standing still.

After a few moments that seemed to stretch for eternity, the man became limp.

Another moment later, Duo released his neck and bit a thumb, touching the side of the neck that Heero could not see and then let the man fall unceremoniously to the ground. Duo seemed to think on something as he gazed at the man's face for a moment before putting his hands in his pockets and leaving the body to be found by someone in the morning. He turned and headed up the street.

Numb, Heero stood from his crouched position and silently walked to the other side of the street, still behind Duo and not wanting to be caught. He stayed a good fifty yards behind him, wanting to follow him to where ever he was headed now.

A gust of wind blew past him suddenly, ruffling his hair to travel forth and make Duo's braid whip in the wind to his side.

Duo stopped walking and merely stood there with his back to him.

'SHIT!!!' Heero realized his folly. While Duo could not sense his presence, he could smell him.

Duo spun around to him.

When Heero's eyes met those of his lover's he felt like he wanted to die.

Duo looked angry and sad at the same time. But most of all, he looked betrayed. "…What are you doing here, Heero?" His voice was hard.

Heero gulped. "I..."

Duo walked towards him briskly to stop right in front of him and glare up at him. "I'm waiting."

"I... I wanted to see what a hunt was like."

Duo scowled and closed his eyes, lowering his head slightly. "So you followed me. Made me think that you were going to stay home and then followed me out here."

Heero felt himself become angry. "Well, maybe if you trusted me with this, I wouldn't have had to! I wanted you to trust me!"

"So you thought AMBUSHING me was the best way to go about it?!" Duo nearly yelled, his eyes flashing dangerously as they returned to his.

"Well YOU weren't about to give me a reason to think you would EVER trust me with this!"

Duo grabbed his wrist and pulled him back into the alley.

Heero was suddenly very afraid of his lover. He pulled to get lose and leaned back, grounding his feet but he was no match for Duo’s strength.

Duo all but dragged him to the corpse at the end and pointed to it. "IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?!"

Heero looked away.

"IS it?! Is that what you want me to do? Make you like me so you have to do this every night?! Be surrounded by these things?!"

Heero glared at him. "All I wanted was your trust! But now I see I'll never get it!"

Duo glared right back at him. "Oh no, don't you DARE turn this around on me! This is all your mess, Heero! Now take a good look!" He shoved him towards the body.

Heero growled as he tried to get his wrist free. "Let me go, Duo!"

"Iye! You take a good long look and then realize why I will never do this to you!" Waves of anger and hurt flowed from him in a torrent of emotion to assault Heero’s uncaring senses.

As Heero continued to struggle to get free of the manacle grip on his wrist, he spoke. "So you'd rather let me die?! Let me live with the guilt of knowing that I would die and leave you in a few short decades?! Don't you CARE what that would do to me?!"

Duo snarled at him. "I'm doing you a fucking favor, Heero! Stop being an idiot for one moment and see that!!! You think you can deal with killing every night?! I saw how badly shaken that ordeal with the marks left you! I never want to see that again. I love you too much to do this! If that means I have to let you go and watch you die to save you, SO BE IT!"

Heero wasn't sure what happened next. His fist just flew towards where Duo was standing, the hard blow connecting with his lower lip.

Duo took the blow, didn't flinch, didn't stumble, didn’t so much as blink, as his lip began to bleed. But his eyes changed. He gazed at Heero for a moment, not saying a word. Then, slowly, he brought his hand to his lip and wiped off the blood with the back of his hand. He licked it from his skin, his eye's never leaving Heero's. A painful farewell.

And then he was gone.

Heero cradled his sore wrist and looked around.

Duo was nowhere to be found.

"Fine!" He shouted to no one as he left the alleyway. Fuming, he walked to where he had parked his motor bike a few blocks away and got on it, starting it and driving towards home.

Not Duo's house. His apartment.

‘DUO! Your cock was cold when you fucked me!' He shouted in his mind, projecting the thought and hoping Duo heard him.

* * *

Duo stumbled into his house and made a beeline for his room, slamming both doors closed behind him so hard the walls shook. He dove onto his bed and buried his head in his pillow.

After a moment, there was a knock at the door.

By some act of god he kept his voice steady. "Go. Away."

He heard the door open and looked about to throw something at Wufei but came up empty handed, so he glared instead. "Chang. Leave me alone."

Wufei nodded but entered the room. "What did he say?"

"OOOOOOH!" Duo roared. "Get OUT! GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT!!!" By the time he was screaming the last few words, he was crying. 'Kuso.' He buried his head under the pillow once more, not wanting Wufei to see him in such a weak state of mind. Wufei had a way of looking down on people and, no doubt, he was doing that now.

To Duo's startlement, he felt a warm hand on his shoulder.

"What happened? I know this has to do with Heero."

Duo cursed him for picking up on the feelings that were too strong for him to mask. "Nothing."

Wufei snorted. "Bullshit."

Duo groaned. "He followed me. The little bastard followed me out."

Wufei was silent for a moment. "So that's where he went."

Duo turned over and glared at him. "You knew?!"

"I knew he left. I did not for where."

Duo wanted to yell at him but he knew the fault did not lie with him. So he groaned once more and buried his head once again in the pillow. "Kuso."

"So he followed you. What did you do?"

After a moment of deliberation, Duo merely closed his eyes and spoke. "I yelled at him. He wants me to sire him."

"And?"

"And I won't fucking do it!"

Wufei sighed. "Maxwell, do you love him?"

Duo snorted. "I love him unconditionally. Give me a gun and I'll prove it."

"Nani?"

"I'd rather watch him die than sire him."

Wufei was silent for a moment and then, in a hushed tone, he spoke. "It's very hard to watch your lover die."

Duo nodded. "I know. He died already once."

Wufei jumped slightly. "Nani?!"

"He was Solo, my best friend as a mortal. He got reincarnated."

Wufei seemed to think on that for a moment. "Hn. I know how you feel about this. But I do not know what to say."

Duo scoffed. "So say nothing."

Wufei nodded and stood. He left the room, closing the door behind himself.

Duo let his tears fall then and curled into a ball, sobbing and wishing that none of the night’s events had happened, praying to any deity that would hear him to wake him from the nightmare.

'Heero...'

* * *

Heero woke up on the couch. 'That bastard.' He thought to himself as he drudged to his room. He took out the box of photos and removed Duo's braid, fingering the softness for a moment before carrying it to the door and throwing it onto the walkway, into the sunlight.

The rope of hair shone beautifully for a moment before crumbling into dust and blowing away on a breeze, even the band being consumed by the reaction.

"Hn." He slammed the door closed and stalked to his computer, selecting a song off the CD of which Duo had let him burn a copy. He carried the computer into his room to try to go to sleep but found he could not close his eyes without seeing the smiling ones of his lover. He sat up and picked the box he took with him everywhere he moved off the floor, opening it.

Another turning point

A fork stuck in the road.

Life grabs you by the wrist

Directs you where to go.

He took out the pictures from Quatre's party, looking over them with unbidden tears in his eyes.

Duo pointing at Wufei who was red with rage, and laughing at something or other while the Chinese looked as though he were about to kill him. Quatre looking like he was going to break it up, but Trowa holding him back to see what would happen. Heero standing off to Duo's side and laughing.

Everyone smiling at the camera with an air of happiness and joy, not a care in the world.

One of everyone smiling, while Duo hung off Heero's back an arm around his neck and the other over his heart possessively as he rested his chin on Heero’s shoulder and smiled to the camera.

So make the best of this test

And don't ask why.

It's not a question

But a lesson learned it time.

One of Duo with an arm around Heero's waist, the other hand pointing to himself with a thumb while he smirked at the camera.

It's something unpredictable

But in the end it's right.

I hope you had the time of your life.

One of Heero and everyone else smiling at the camera while Duo looked to him with love shining in his amethyst depths.

So take the photographs

And still frames in your mind.

Hang it on a shelf

In good health

And good time.

He took all the pictures and tore them in half, crumpling them into a ball and chucking them into the trash.

Tattoos of memories

And dead skin on trial.

For what it's worth,

It was worth all the while.

He fell back against the mattress, an arm over his eyes while he cried.

It's something unpredictable

But in the end it's right.

I hope you had the time of your life.

Hating Duo and himself, Heero cried himself to sleep.

It's something unpredictable

But in the end it's right.

I hope you had the time of your life.

* * *

Duo awoke the next evening. He moaned piteously at the pain in his soul and got out of bed, stumbling into the living room where Wufei was. He checked his watch. "Aren't you going hunting?"

Wufei shook his head. "Iye."

Duo shrugged. He certainly was not going to order the man out to kill anyone. He shuffled into the kitchen and took out a pint of blood and the glass, heating it. When he removed the glass from the heater, he looked about the kitchen. "Chang?"

"Ah?"

"Where is that alcohol?"

Wufei walked in and took a large bottle out of a cupboard, handing it to him.

Duo read the label. 'Wild Turkey. Good, it's strong.' He opened the cap and poured a ridiculous amount into the glass.

"Good god, man, are you trying to kill yourself?" Wufei asked as he watched him with an incredulous look on his face.

Duo snorted. "If only this worked." He downed the glass and grimaced. "Damn."

Wufei took the bottle from him. "No more."

Duo shrugged nonchalantly and washed the glass. He turned to head back to his room but stumbled, barely saving himself before he fell to the floor and remaining standing by sheer luck alone. 'Woah. That was fast.'

"Baka." Wufei helped him into the living room to sit on the couch. He sat next to him and watched him for a moment. "Dai ja bu ka?"

Duo shrugged again, closing his eyes and leaning his head back as he hiccuped. "Does it matter?"

Wufei sighed and leaned back, still watching him.

Duo realized something and then began to laugh hysterically. He opened his eyes to look at Wufei as he wiped away tears of bitter mirth. "We ARE pathetic, ne?"

Wufei seemed to bristle. "I am not_"

"Both of us sitting here with broken hearts." Duo interrupted. He glanced at Wufei who still seemed a little angry and sighed, leaning his head back again. "I may be love’s bitch, but at least I’m man enough to admit it."

Calming, Wufei smirked sadly. "I suppose." He seemed to think for a moment. "What are you going to do?"

His head lolling to the side as the room spun pleasantly, he shrugged. "What CAN I do?"

"Go to him."

He shook his head. "No way in Hell. I do NOT want to deal with it. He's only going to bring it up and I'm tired of fighting about it. Also, he saw me kill someone. Brutally."

Wufei nodded. "Hn. Time?"

"Ah. And booze. Lots and lots of booze." He said as he waved his hand limply with his words as if they were music.

Wufei snorted. "That's an emotionally sound plan."

"Hn." He concurred. The room began to spin with abandon then and he leaned onto the arm of the sofa, liking that idea better than leaning on Wufei. "Look at it go." He said as he watched the walls spin.

It was his last memory before things became black.

I hope you guys don't hate me after that. It gets even worse and WAY more complicated in the next few chapters. I won't begrudge you for hate mail. There's much more angst ahead.
