SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:

CHAPTER 36: SURREALITY

Heero felt his blood run cold. "You... *YOU'RE* HIS *DEALER*?!"

The few students still on the campus turned to look at him as they walked to their cars or classes.

He glanced around before hissing his next words. "Doug, if you're kidding, this is beyond not funny."

Doug gave him a somber look. "Heero. I'm not kidding. How the hell would I know about Maxwell? You think I can just make this shit up? I know. Everything. Vamps are real. I've known since I was a kid."

Carelessly chucking his bottle of soda aside, Heero grabbed his friend’s wrist and pulled him to Doug's car, all but pushing him against the door. "Keys. Open. Now."

Doug reached a hand into his pocket and pulled out a small key chain, fumbling slightly before unlocking the door to his old car and getting in.

Heero got in the other side and stared at the friend he thought he had known better than anyone else until he met Duo. "Spill it. All of it." He said with a menacing glare.

"Not until you calm down. This is obviously no shock to you, the fact that vampires exist. So stop glaring at me and THEN I'll talk, Yuy." Said the boy.

Heero took a breath and forcibly dropped his scowl. Mostly. "Ok. Now will you talk? How do you know all this?"

Doug looked out the windshield. "I found out when I was Ten. My mother was attacked by one. It was what Duo has probably told you by now is a mark. Am I right?"

Heero nodded. "The bad ones, yes."

"Yeah. The Doci's_the 'docile' ones_named them that because that's what an assassin calls the one he or she is hired to assassinate. Makes sense, huh?"

He nodded and waited for the other boy to speak.

"Yeah, so my mother invited this guy into the house who said that his car broke down and he needed to use the phone. He damn near killed her. She got lucky and my father and I walked in. My dad picked up a baseball bat and went to town on the guy's head while he was still latched onto my mom. The vamp hissed and then disappeared. We got mom to the hospital in time and she got a transfusion. Plus we kind of interrupted the vamp so he didn't kill her." He sighed. "A hunter in the area_has he told you about vamp hunters?"

He nodded again.

"Yeah, well one that was scouting that hospital read the file that said 'two puncture marks to the neck and extreme blood loss' and asked us some questions. We told her what_"

"Her?"

Doug smiled. "They usually work in teams. And it can be a woman or a man. Anyway, we told her what happened and she filled us in. And then she and my dad worked together to find him. She killed him. My dad basically gave her a description and she teamed up with a doci and hunted him down."

Heero processed all that information. "Why didn't you tell me any of this?"

Doug smiled a crooked, wry smile. "Would you have believed me?"

After a moment, Heero shook his head. "Not until a few weeks ago, I wouldn't have."

"Wait a sec. You've only known the guy for a few weeks and you're already jumping into bed with him? Christ on a cracker, Yuy! Just how desperate were you?!"

Heero narrowed his eyes at him. "Shut up. It's complicated and you wouldn't understand." He thought about all the things that had been said. "So, I take it you don't hate them. Vampires in general. Seeing as how you supply a few with blood."

Doug shook his head. "I hate marks. I'm a part-time hunter. Up for hire when a full-fledged is in town and needs a hand. Or a doci. It's safer to fight along side a doci cause they'll protect you with their lives and are way faster and stronger than hunters could ever HOPE to be. And even though some hunters have a vengeance thing to settle, most usually hunt for money. Doci's, on the other hand, won't settle for losing. They have more riding on the fights than a paycheck. I don't mind doci's. I don't wanna get all chummy with them, but I don't hate them. It's kind of a 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' deal. And they're half my income. On the other hand, I hate marks with a fiery passion. I'll probably keep hunting until I die." He pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his backpack on his lap and rolled down the manual window on his side, lighting a cigarette with a disposable lighter and blowing the smoke out of the car.

The stress triggering a craving, Heero did the same. "Think you and I could go hunting some time? There's one in particular I have to get. I think that then I could sleep easier."

Doug shook his head. "Sorry, Yuy, but you're untrained, and that means vulnerable. Plus, I could get in big trouble, taking a civilian out."

"I'm not a civilian, Doug." He said before he took a drag. "I killed one already. Duo taught me how to fight and gave me Ki."

Doug's head whipped to him. "The energy?"

"Yeah." Another drag. "I want this particular mark dead. It's giving me grief and I think it bugs Duo, too."

"Wow. He must REALLY like you to trust you with Ki. I wasn't even sure if that was possible. Wow." He took a drag. "So who's the mystery mark? And why do you want him dead so bad? Aside from the obvious of course."

"I won't get into detail. I just want him gone. I have a bad feeling. I dusted one of his kindred and Duo took care of his sire but he got away."

"Haha! You're even using the lingo. I can't believe you've only known for a few weeks. You seem like this is no big thing. ...Are you Ok? I mean, with the dusting and all."

Heero nodded. "Yeah. It was a matter of life and death. I'm surprised we were the ones that lived. There were seven of them." He ignored the squawk that Doug made and continued. "Only one survived. And Duo got staked."

"Shit! Is he dead?!"

"No. Really close, though. He's recuperating at home right now."

There was a short moment of silence in which the two took drags from the cigarettes and looked about the oblivious people walking around the campus.

Heero almost envied them. Almost.

"Pft. Small world huh? You meeting up with my client by chance? I guess this place is smaller than it seems."

Taking another drag, Heero nodded.

At last, Doug spoke with a chuckle. "This explains it."

"Explains what?"

"I drop by your place every now and then to see what's up and you're never there. I mean, like, if you had a cat, it would be dead by now. You've taken that song by Cake to a whole new extreme, my friend."

Heero nodded. "Yeah. Between school and work and Duo, I don't spend much time at home anymore."

"I know. So how did you two meet anyway?"

"I caught him hunting. Then he found me in a bar and we talked stuff through. I was pretty merred out."

Doug nodded. "Yeah. The world is a very different place at night..." He took a long drag. "Say hi to him for me, will ya? And ask him to give me a call. I'm low on cash and he pays ridiculously well." He said with a wide grin.

Heero smiled slightly as he stepped out of the car. "Will do. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yep." Doug smiled around the cigarette in his lips as he started the car with one hand and put his seatbelt on with the other.

Sighing mentally as he took another drag from the cigarette, Heero walked to his motor bike, steeling his will for a day with Relena and hoping she left him alone.

* * *

Heero shirked the dirty feeling he had from having to be near his mortal, blonde-haired nemesis, and walked up the steps and into his apartment. He had to be there SOME of the time. He walked straight to his room and put the double collection of pictures from Quatre's party in the box beneath his bed. Duo had been sent one envelope with two sets of copies in them and one was for Heero. He did the same for the braid he still had. That morning, he had been shocked to find his bike bloodless but Duo had explained that the sun burned it off. He had asked why they had not done so for the couch but Duo said it would have eaten a hole in the thin fabric. So Heero deftly kept his lover's hair out of sunlight, keeping it safe and then putting it in the box where he kept all things dear to him. He looked about the apartment and hated it. 'It's too quiet. And empty. It seems.... Wrong.' He decided to go straight home and laughed when he realized that he was now calling Duo's house "home". 'That's cause wherever Duo is, is home to me.' He put his backpack down, not having to attend classes the next day due to cancellations, and decided to do his homework later. 'Right now I wanna go see him. I have to tell him that I know Doug.'

He walked out of the bedroom and made a beeline for the door.

Ok Ok, I know. "Doci"? Jeez. Well I tried other words but they didn’t quite work. Oh well.
