"Insight to the Past"

Written By: Stone Angel

Disclaimer: Oh, please. Do you honestly think I'm making money off this? If I was, I'd be writing a whole lot more and it wouldn't take getting drunk to do it. I don't own the characters or the show, if I did, it would be SOOO different. Screw the war, let's see how we can get Heero and Duo in a locked room after taking away their clothes. (wolfish grin) I just like to make the creators cry with the way I write their characters. ^____^ Mission accomplished. hehehe

Rating: R (just because because)

Warnings: Occult? Definately AU, Blood, insanity(not funny stuff, characters on the edge)
and some older style English. If you are squeamish around blood and/or death, skip this
one. It's kinda dark. Also set in the 18th century.

Pairings: None (gasp! Actually this is a first for me)

Authors Notes: This fic is here by demand. Enough people asked for a better description of how Duo and Quatre met in the 1700's so here it is. It is a prologue and then three parts that are too short to be called chapters. The whole thing is pretty tiny, about 10 pages. The begining is fuzzy but it's SUPPOSED to be as Duo is not in the best state of mind. He's kinda insane.

THIS FIC IS A PREQUEL TO "SHADOWS AND LIGHT AN UNBREAKABLE BOND". IF YOU DID NOT READ THAT ONE, SKIP THIS ONE AS IT WILL MAKE LITTLE TO NO SENSE TO YOU..... Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Insight to the Past

Epilogue:

Duo looked about the room in which Quatre had left him for the day.

There was a large bed with heavy blankets that were made of the softest material he had ever felt. There was a window, but the curtains over it were so heavy that one would not guess that it was nearly day. A large vanity was next to the bed with a mirror that offered a perfectly clear reflection of himself and a hair brush with many ties upon the polished surface of the reddish wood. He decided that, while he liked his exotic surroundings, he hadn’t done anything to deserve them. He recalled what Quatre had said about letting him stay and teaching him, and he also recalled that Quatre said that he desired no money in return.

Looking over to the bed, he saw the deep red robe draped on the foot of it. ‘Oh.’ He quickly disrobed and walked over to the fine garment, slipping into it a bit awkwardly and then looked at himself in the mirror. Pulling it around himself, he tied the sash. Then he pulled his braid forward and took the small ribbon from the tip, letting the plait loosen. Running the brush through his hair a few times, he examined himself critically. The deep red made his skin seem even creamier than it already was, his hair shone in the light, and he did seem to look better now that he had fed. Plastering the smirk that the customers always loved onto his face, he stepped out of his room and made his way to where he had seen Quatre go.

* * *

Pushing the door open, Duo peeked around the edge to see Quatre reading from one of the many books that filled the bookshelf against the wall and sipping from a small cup of tea. Not able to read, himself, Duo did not know what the letters on the cover meant, but he knew that Quatre’s night was about be much more interesting than the book. He planned to do everything he could think of to repay Quatre for his kindness.

Stepping into the room, Duo closed the door quietly. Most wouldn’t have heard it, but he and Quatre were not most.

Quatre’s eyes raised from the book and he lowered it from his face. "Duo." He looked down to see that Duo wore only the robe and he adopted a confused expression. "Duo?"

Slowly stepping closer to the bed, Duo pulled on the sash and let the robe fall from his shoulders to the floor where it pooled at his feet.

Quatre watched it fall and blushed deeply before looking away. "Duo! What..."

Duo smirked at him as he walked closer and bent over him, letting his hair fall into Quatre’s lap as he waited for the other to look at him.

When the long hair touched him, Quatre jumped and his eyes snapped to Duo’s. "Duo? What are you doing?"

Placing a hand on Quatre’s thigh and sliding it upward slowly, Duo brought his lips close to Quatre’s face. "I’m repaying you. The way you want me to."

Quatre blushed even deeper and placed a hand over Duo’s, halting his progress. "E-excuse me?"

"You said that there would be no money here. Even if there was, I have no money. I’m repaying you the other way." Duo said. This shouldn’t have been confusing for the other man.

Quatre’s eyes blinked as he understood what Duo was saying. "Oh… Duo." He placed his tea on the small table next to his bed. "Duo, no." He lifted the hand from his thigh and grabbed the blanket from his bed. Draping it over Duo, who now had a very confused expression on his face, he pulled it closed and looked into his eyes.

Duo frowned. "You don’t want me?" What was wrong with him? This had never happened before. Was there something the matter with him that Quatre did not want him?

"Duo..." Quatre seemed as though he was looking for the right words. "I... I don’t want you that way." He stroked Duo’s hair away from his face. "You are going through a difficult time right now. And I don’t want you to feel that the only way that you can repay me is by whoring yourself. I do not want money from you. I also do not want your body. However, this house is empty and I have not had a friend with which I lived for many years. I would be grateful if you stayed with me here." Pulling Duo slightly closer, he lifted him completely off his feet and set him on the bed next to him.

Duo gasped as he was once again reminded of how much stronger than he Quatre was.

Quatre smiled sadly to him. "Duo, for us, things are different than they are for mortal men. Such as our relationships to people. Keeping human friends or lovers... It is next to impossible." His eyes became sad as he said that and it was obvious that he was grieving for someone. "Humans keep friends often for their entire lifetimes. For us, a lifetime can span centuries, for some, even longer. And keeping human friends is not something that one can do for that long of a time. I have not had a friend in years. What I want from you is friendship. You are free to stay or go, there is no obligation here. If you wish, after I am done teaching you the things you need to know, you may leave. Or you may stay. I would prefer it if you did the latter." Quatre graced him with a genuine smile and Duo looked forward in thought.

‘To have a friend that understands everything... I have wanted that. And while I will tell Solo, I also want to be friends with Quatre. After hiding myself from everyone for so long... To find another... He’s like me. I need that. He obviously needs it as well.’ He felt Quatre’s hand on his face and realized that he was wiping away a tear. Looking to the other, Duo launched forward and buried his face in Quatre’s necktie, bringing up his arms and holding tentatively to the other. Quatre’s arms were then around him as well and he was rubbing his back as Duo cried silently.

"What say you?" Quatre’s voice was soft, right next to his ear and Duo suddenly noticed the tension in the other’s body.

He realized that Quatre had just asked for a long-term friendship and he was just as scared of being rejected as Duo was of being alone again. Nodding, Duo spoke. "I want a friend like me. I’m staying." He smiled just a little as the tension left Quatre’s body. "I would be lost, still on the street, as confused as I have been for the last two years, hiding from the sun but knowing not why, unable to stop myself from killing people close to me when I hunger, were it not for you. I can never thank you enough. I was nobody. You told me that I can become somebody and offered to teach me how to do it. No one ever offered me that. And while I am not happy that this is not something temporary, I am happy that I have met someone as permanent as I with whom I can be friends. I don’t think that I could leave that for anything."

Quatre was quiet and still for a long moment before chuckling softly. "That’s the most you’ve said since we met."

Duo realized that that was true and also that this was the most contact they had shared since they had met. He began to pull back but Quatre’s arm around his back kept him in place with gentle reassurance.

"Don’t be so scared. Not all contact is bad. Is this so loathsome?" Quatre said softly.

Duo stopped trying to pull back, but he did not relax completely. "Iye. It’s just..."

"I know." Quatre removed his arm and waited for Duo to move away from him.

Thinking about it, Duo decided that he really didn’t mind Quatre touching him and he stayed where he was.

"The sun will rise very soon." Said Quatre, his voice more than a little surprised at Duo’s social behavior.

"Hn."

"Are you staying here for the day, or are you returning to your room?"

Duo pulled back just enough to look into the sincere blue-green eyes. "Which should I do?"

"Your choice." Quatre replied with a smile.

Thinking hard, Duo made yet another decision that night. He moved to the other side of the bed and, keeping half of the blanket for himself, offered the other side to Quatre.

Smiling brightly, Quatre took it and lay back, resting his head upon a pillow. "Arigato."

"Doitashimashite."

Quatre handed him one of the two pillows he had.

"Arigato."

"Doitashimashite." Quatre smiled again and then turned to face the other way.

Duo rolled over to face the other way as well, resting his head against the pillow and thinking hard about the night’s events. As he did, he realized that he was grinning for the first time in years, and he felt that he could for years more.
