Disclaimer: I WISH I was making money off this. And I wish I owned the characters. But, sadly, they're just my playthings and other people who are richer and happier than I can claim otherwise.

Rating: R

Warnings: TWT, shounen ai, sap, fluff, occaisional silliness, humor, angst, blood, violence, language, kinda super natural.

Archive: Steal it or any parts of it and I WILL kill you. I’m not kidding, I’ve seen me do it

Pairings: 1x2

Authors Notes: It's Super Natural in a really wierd way(that isn't even a good way to describe it), *NOT* SCI-FI, *NOT* DARK in the least, and it's something that I'm sure many of us have thought of at one time or another but I've never read anything about it so I'm changing that. Hmph.

I hope you like it. ^_^

Spoilers: Yeah, a few. Unfortunately, they are from several episodes from all over the the series(including the Episode Zero manga) so listing them all would be pointless. And they are things that I think everyone knows already. But, to cover my own ass, if you have not seen the show, don't read. Also, why would you be here? 0_o

Feedback: I will love you forever if you let me know what you think. Good comments adored, CC welcomed, flames laughed at.

THANKS TO... KOHAKU!!! (glomps!), who helped me work out a few things with the fic. You rock!

"Birds Of A Feather"

Chapter 4

At last, everything went still as Duo stared at the wings that looked to be a part of Heero.

They were perfectly white and only slightly damp from his shower, and so long that the tips of them just barely touched the floor. Though they were folded, they arched up well above his head, and they seemed large and strong.

Heero's eyes became steadily wider and wider.

Looking back to meet them, Duo suddenly wanted to run.

Heero didn't give him the chance. He walked forward quickly and grabbed the base of Duo's braid in one hand, holding that hand out in front of himself so Duo was right in front of him, facing him, and pulled him backwards towards the door.

Duo yelped in pain but Heero ignored it.

"Duo." He said in a voice that could only belong to a killer. "Remember that talk we had about you NEVER coming in this room when the door was closed?"

"Yeah?" Duo squeaked as he was pulled to the door.

"Do you remember what you said to me?"

"That I would never open it or go in." He replied as he reached back and tried to relax Heero's grip on his hair.

Heero pulled the braid roughly and opened the bedroom door, pulling Duo's hair hard and forcing him out into the hall. He released the braid and grabbed Duo's collar instead, hauling him forward so he looked him in the eyes.

His frame shook with rage and every muscle in his body was tense. His deep blue eyes were narrowed dangerously under a deep scowl and the emotions in them were so plain for anyone to see that screaming them could not have been more telling. He was PISSED!

Duo had never seen such anger in Heero's eyes before.

"You lied." He said coldly.

He then shoved Duo backwards into the wall across from his door and Duo bounced off it and fell to the carpet.

Heero stepped back and slammed the door closed so hard that the doorjamb flew off the wall and almost hit Duo's shoulder.

For a moment, Duo stared at the closed door in shock. He remembered his motto. `I may run and hide...'

He heard a brief rustling sound like before and noises of movement within and recognized the sound of Heero's duffel bag's zipper. `Oh no.'

Less than ten seconds later, Heero opened the door, wings gone, dressed, and carrying his duffel over his shoulder. He stepped over Duo as if he wasn't there and walked quickly down the hall.

Duo pulled himself up, wincing as his back complained, and chased after the other pilot. "Wait!"

"Not a chance." Heero responded as he ran down the stairs.

"Just let me talk!"

"You talk too much already, WHY do you think I want to hear you talk NOW?" Heero shot back as he opened the front door and exited the house.

Duo was right on his heels. "Just listen! I need to talk to you!" He caught up and put a hand on Heero's shoulder to stop him and Heero spun around and punched him.

Pain radiated through his skull and Duo placed a hand over his left eye and looked up to Heero with his good one.

Heero glared at him for a couple of seconds before spinning on his heel and heading straight for the hangar.

`If he leaves, he's gone for good.' Duo realized. He suddenly felt the icy hand of panic close around his heart, over-riding any pain and indignation, and lunged for Heero, throwing himself at him. Catching his waist with his shoulder, he tackled Heero and forced him to the ground, quickly circling his arms around the pilot, and not intending to let go until Heero had listened to him.

"LET ME GO RIGHT FUCKING NOW, DUO!!!" Heero yelled and flipped himself so he was on his back.

Duo loosened his arms enough so that he wasn't flipped as well and was now hugging Heero's hips with his face pressed to his lower chest. "No! Not until you hear what I have to say."

Heero tried to sit up, but Duo did everything he could to keep him still and somehow managed. He tried to get Duo's arms off him, but it was simply easier for Duo to keep his arms there than it was for Heero to reach behind himself and remove them. "Nothing you say is going to help!" Heero snapped at him and grabbed his braid and
pulled downwards.

The action forced Duo's head back but he refused to let go. "It might!" He insisted and then almost released Heero as he was struck in the eye again. "FUCK, Heero! Did you have to go for the same eye?!"

Heero made to go for the other one and Duo buried his face in Heero's shirt again.

"No! Stop!" He yelled into the fabric. "Just stop it and let me talk!"

"There is NOTHING you can say to me right now, Duo!!!" Heero yelled at him.

Duo noticed that the timbre of Heero's voice was rising as he said that and looked up.

Heero was glaring at Duo for all he was worth, his eyes narrowed, his frame shaking with rage. "Nothing." He whispered. Tears formed in his eyes and he let his head fall back and turned it to the side in the grass so Duo couldn't see his face. "Nothing you say is going to make this all right." He said softly.

Duo swallowed his emotions and spoke. "I... I went in to try to make things better."

Heero's frame stiffened, his hand tightening around Duo's braid. "HOW is this better, Baka?"

"I fucked up, Okay?!" Duo responded before taking a breath and continuing. "I went in to apologize. For biting your head off out here. All you did was shut the door. That's just one of the things I hate the most, but you didn't know that and I totally over-reacted
and attacked you. Heero, you are THE *SINGLE* rudest guy I've EVER met. But you're not cruel. What I said... That was cruel. So I wanted to say that I was sorry. And I am. I'm sorry, Heero."

Heero didn't say anything or respond in any way.

Duo sighed. "By yelling at you, all I ended up doing was creating an even bigger rift between us, when all that I want is for us to be friends." He laid his head on Heero's ribcage. "I guess that's a lost cause now, huh?"

Heero didn't say anything and Duo remained perfectly still and silent, unwilling to move.

`As soon as I let him up, he's gone and I'll never see him again.'

Then, slowly, Heero's hand released Duo's braid and fell to the grass.

Duo looked up at him.

Heero still had his face turned away from him. "Let me up, Duo."

"Will you come back to the house?"

"I can't if you don't let me up."

"That's a double answer."

"I'll go into the house. I'm not going to promise that I'll stay." He said in a low voice.

Duo didn't release him. "Is that the best answer I'm going to get?"

"Yes."

"Are going to stop hitting me?"

"I won't promise that, either. ...But I will try."

Duo slowly released his arms from around Heero's waist and sat back.

Heero immediately sat up and sprang to his feet. He glared down at Duo.

Duo stood up because sitting there with Heero standing over him and glaring at him was awkward.

As soon as Duo was standing, Heero delivered a punch to his abdomen that made him fall hard and sit back down again. Picking up his duffel bag, Heero walked towards the house.

"Not fair." Duo croaked as he held his abdomen and fell to his side in the grass.

"Isn't there one of those many annoying American sayings that don't really mean anything that goes along the lines of `All's fair in love and war'?" Heero responded as he vanished into the house.

`Meaning he considers me an enemy right now.' Duo thought bitterly. He focused on breathing instead of giving some smart remark. He looked at the blades of grass right in front of his eyes and waited until the pain died down enough for him to move. In the meantime, he thought over things.

`So... Is he an angel? He's where the feathers came from, there's no doubt about that. Did the Doc do this to him, or was he born that way? I wonder if he can actually fly. I wonder if I'll ever find out. This must be why he acts the way he does. He's rude on purpose to push people away so that this would never happen. But he wasn't counting on my stupidity.'

His abdomen felt a little better so he slowly got to his feet and very carefully walked into the house.

Heero was just coming down the stairs as Duo closed the door. He looked at Duo from the corners of his eyes before heading into the kitchen.

Duo heard him fill a glass with water.

A moment later, Heero stepped around the wall that separated the kitchen from the living room and leaned against it, crossing his arms and looking Duo over. "You look like shit."

Duo would have glared, but his eye hurt too much. "Yeah. Well I hope I at least bruised your fist with my face."

Heero shook his head to indicate a negative. He sighed and looked at Duo's eye that felt swollen. "That's turning black."

Duo brought his hand up to it but didn't touch it. "Shit. Really? I was hoping it would just be swollen for a day or two."

Heero used his shoulder to bump himself away from the wall he was leaned against and walked over to Duo.

Duo watched him warily, unsure if he was going to hit him again, but not wanting to make matters worse by backing away.

Heero obviously noticed his concern but acknowledged nothing. He grabbed Duo's wrist and pulled him into the dining room.

"What are you doing?" Duo asked right before Heero shoved him into a chair at the table that he pulled out and turned to face the kitchen.

Heero moved to the fridge and took out the second half of the raw steak Duo had bought and carried it over to him.

"Oh, no, don't_" Duo protested before Heero gently slapped it onto his face over his eye. He groaned in pain and exasperation. "So what are we going to eat for dinner tonight then?"

"Obviously something else." Heero answered as he made sure it wouldn't fall off when he took his hand away. "Keep that where it is."

"This is so gross." Duo protested. He watched as Heero washed and dried his hands before he opened the med cabinet, took out a bottle of painkillers and set it on the counter. "So, are we even now?"

"No." Heero then took out a glass and filled it with milk. He shook six of the tablets out of the pill bottle and carried them and the glass over to Duo at the table.

Duo took the glass when it was handed to him. "Are you going to beat me up everyday, then?"

Heero placed the pills in Duo's other hand. "I don't have that kind of time. Swallow these." He moved away and put the pill bottle back in the cabinet and washed his hands in the sink again.

Duo brought his head forward, careful not to let the meat slide off his face, and popped the pills into his mouth before gulping down the milk.

Heero took his glass when he was done and washed it. "You left a pretty good-sized dent in the wall in the hallway."

Duo rolled his eyes before wincing. "Yeah, well I'm not taking credit for that when Goldy Locks shows up."

Heero put the clean glass in the dish-rack and walked back to Duo, crouching in front of his chair.

"What?" Duo asked suspiciously.

"You winced. What hurts? Your eye or your stomach?"

"It couldn't have been my pride?" He asked sarcastically.

Heero stuck two fingers against Duo's abdomen suddenly, making Duo grit his teeth, and he watched his face for signs of extreme pain as he felt his abdomen.

Duo groaned a little as Heero checked for serious injury.

"Nothing here." He removed his hand and brought it to Duo's face, lifting the steak from his eye. "Can you open it?"

Duo opened his eye as much as he could, barely enough to see through it.

Heero held up a finger on his other hand. "Follow it."

Duo kept his eyes on Heero's finger as he moved it to the right and left, then up and down.

"Can you see all right?"

"Yeah."

"Any double vision?"

"No."

Heero then stood and grabbed the flashlight out of the emergency cabinet and brought it to Duo. He turned it on and held it a foot away from Duo's face, aimed at his eye. "The pupil is constricting. The only thing causing you any pain is the swelling. You're fine." He slapped the steak back on the eye, making Duo hiss.

Heero remained there, crouching in front of Duo's chair with a troubled look on his face.

"What?" Duo demanded.

Heero shook his head. "What am I going to do with you, Duo?"

Duo blinked his eye. "Uhh..."

Heero sighed as he stood, setting the flashlight on the counter as he walked to the sink to wash his hands again. "No one was supposed to know." He said as he scowled out the window over the faucet.

Duo swallowed hard. "Well, it's not like anyone would believe me if I told them."

Heero's head turned to him quickly and he gave him his "Just how dumb ARE you?" look.

"Not that I would." He added quickly.

Heero was silent as he dried his hands on the dishtowel.

"Ne, Heero... You're not gonna kill me, are you?" Duo asked in a small voice.

"Yes." Heero answered without missing a beat, still paying attention to drying his hands on the towel. He continued in a serious tone. "But first I thought I'd check you for serious injuries then give you something for the pain and take the swelling off your eye_ Of COURSE I'm not going to kill you, Baka!" He scowled at him. "Think BEFORE you speak."

Duo waved his hands in front of himself to try to calm the other pilot down. "Hey, hey, it's just ya never know these days, ne?"

Heero sighed and looked away.

Duo played with a bit of bunched fabric by the knee of his pants. "So... Are you an angel?" He asked carefully.

Heero looked back to him, his blue eyes annoyed. "No."

"Then_"

"Look, what does it matter? We both fight for the same cause, that's all you need to know."

"But_"

"Duo." His voice meant business. "Drop it."

Duo chewed his lip a little. `There's so much I want to know.' "Okay, how about this. Just tell me why you became a Gundam Pilot."

*

Heero glared at him. "Why should I?"

Duo gestured to the hunk of meat on his eye and Heero scoffed, dropping the glare and looking away.

"You got what you deserved, I don't owe you anything. Actually, you got off easy."

"Okay, well can you tell me just because I'm so likable?"

"Who in their right mind_"

"Please?"

"Why do you want to know?" He returned his eyes to Duo and glared again.

The braided pilot looked annoyed and his tone had attitude. "It's a personal question, okay?"

Heero narrowed his eyes and mocked his tone. "I don't have to answer personal questions, OKAY?"

"Just tell me?" Duo begged.

Heero sighed and looked up to the ceiling. `I can't tell him about the whole story. Why I fight... My calling. But I can tell him why I agreed to work for J. Even though they are directly related.' He thought about it for a moment before answering. "I make it a rule to
think before I do anything. I analyze my actions from every possible angle before I do them. As a result, everything I do is very deliberate and I never regret anything. I started piloting because I wanted to. I analyzed it first, and decided to do it because it
seemed like the right thing to do and I wanted to. It's that simple."

Duo shook his head. "But why did you start fighting in the first place?"

"That wasn't your question." Heero responded.

"That's what I meant."

"Then you should have said it. Try thinking about what you say before you say it for a day."

Duo glared with one eye. "I thought that was YOUR problem, not mine."

Heero blinked. `Touché.'

Duo looked at the floor. "Ne. About that. I just want you to know that, even when you're rude, I know what you're trying to say. So don't worry about it."

Heero looked away. "Talking is harder than normal people make it seem."

Duo nodded. "I know a pilot with a uni-bang who would agree with you." He paused. "Hey, Trowa's not a... A... You know...?"

"Why?" Heero asked as he crossed his arms. "Because he has trouble communicating, too?" He snorted. "As far as I know, he is not."

Duo nodded silently and his stomach growled.

Heero wanted to smile at the easy way out of the conversation but was too busy jumping on it. "You eat breakfast?"

"Not yet." Duo admitted. "This morning was kinda busy."

Heero nodded and took out the milk, cereal, a bowl and a spoon and set them all in front of Duo. "Eat. I'm not going to feed you. And you're not seriously injured, so I'm not obligated to take care of you."

Duo nodded and poured some of the cereal into his bowl.

Heero headed for the stairs. "I'm going to re-attach the doorjamb and see if there's anything I can do about the Duo-shaped dent in Quatre's wall." He called over his shoulder as he took the stairs two at a time, grateful to be done with the talk. `He's handling this pretty well, considering.' He thought to himself as he walked. `I wonder if that has anything to do with my beating the crap out of him. Maybe he has a small concussion. Maybe he'll pass out and not remember anything when he wakes up.'

For some reason that Heero had to classify as insane, that thought bothered him.

*

Duo took the steak off his eye with one hand and pushed his cereal around with his spoon with the other. `So now, with one fact, I know even less about him than I did before. How am I going to get us to be friends if we can't even get to know each other?'
