It was the calm before the storm. Lieutenant Zechs Merquise stretched one leg in front of him. The sound of creaking leather drove home the boredom that hed felt the past few days. Theyd heard the rumors about Operation M and patrols such as this one were on the lookout for shooting stars. So far it had been nothing more than routine, but there was no way that this could continue. He hoped they would not make him wait too long. There were only so many times he could read the same report on the plans of the colonial rebels. The gravity of the situation had weighed over him heavily and he pushed aside thoughts of how his life might be different if the Sanq kingdom hadnt fallen and his parents had lived. Relena would have grown up knowing her rightful place in the world, even if he was destined to disappoint his father. His current position as an officer of OZ had to be making the deceased king roll over in his grave. At a very young age the boy then known as Milliardo Peacecraft had started to question things that others took for granted. He wondered how long it would take before the pacifists learned the ugly truth, that man was a bloodthirsty animal and that violence was likely to erupt in even the most tranquil settings. Those who believed that peace and utopia were permanently attainable were doomed to disappointment, and hed found bitter satisfaction at being proven right. He crossed one leg over the other and listened to the pilots of the spacecraft with growing ennui. Even when the report that a potential meteor was falling toward earth came, he felt nothing but scorn that theyd assume that it was probably nothing to worry about. That theyd informed him to be on the safe side told him more that they wanted to keep their jobs than that they felt any concern that theyd found evidence of Operation M. He got to his feet and watched it fall, gaining speed. Hed been right. It was certainly sent by the colonies and if the fighter pilot was smart, he would have to slow down to let the civilian craft remain intact. Witnesses for a covert operation were a liability that the pilot couldnt afford. Zechs was disappointed. Hed hoped for something more impressive from the colonies. This was nothing to be concerned about. Hed engage in battle, shoot the object down, and be back onboard with nothing more to do until the debriefing afterwards. The least the pilot could do would be to give him a workout. Even after the fight, when he watched the Gundam and the Leo fall to the ocean, locked together in an embrace that gave added weight to the enemy mobile suit, he had no idea hed see the pilot, the real weapon, again. He didnt know it then, but it was the last time hed make the mistake of underestimating this particular soldier.
