Disclaimer : Someone told me I didn't own them. I'm still reeling from the news. And I still have no money if you want to sue. Hey, if I did own them, I'd probably be too busy to experiment some PWP scenarios to have time to even think of writing this !

Rating : Probably PG-13 in the beginning, but PG-15 is safer for the rest because of language and other stuff

Warnings : AU, high school fluffy fluff --> teenagers discussing love, sex and relationships. Shounen ai and het romance and sap. Bit of OOC-ness of the 'I am normal' kind. Mild Relena-bashing (it won’t last for he whole story, since I found out I am unable to be mean to that girl for extended periods of time)

Intended for fun and relaxation, although I'm not sure I'll be able to keep it completely angst-free. Angst just seems to creep up everywhere I go. In fact, it's not me, It's Kawaii Lil' Lia who says it, teenagers angst away about anything, so ... *sighs*

Pairings : Main 2+1 and 4+3+4, 5+M. Unreciprocated R+1 and H+2. 6+9, Solo + Cathy, Odin + Sally

Dedicated to 'the stalker' (she knows who she is).

"Hey I'm New!"

Part 2

[Two days later]

Heero had managed to find a nice empty corridor in which to sit and finish that History essay about the Civil War. He had left Wufei with Quatre and Trowa, and somehow managed to lose Relena on the way. It was exasperating how the girl always seemed to turn up everywhere he stepped. Her friend, Dorothy Catalonia, was always smirking behind her back, and Heero never really knew if she was laughing at Relena or at him.

He had also escaped Duo Maxwell. That was both a relief and a disappointment. Just like Relena, Duo seemed to appear out of thin air just when Heero thought he was alone. Unlike her, Duo was not all over him. Sure, the braided boy’s chatter had nearly driven him crazy. Duo never shut up when he didn’t have to, talking about everything and anything just to fill the silence, and apparently not stopping to take his breath back. On the second day of school, Wufei had developed an interesting theory : Duo was a vampire and as such didn’t need to breathe at all. Heero had shattered the theory by reminding Wufei that vampires were supposed to burn in the sunlight, but it had merits anyway.

But then, there was the fact that Wufei actually liked Duo and his friends. Wufei had always been more open than him, Heero freely admitted it. And Duo, Trowa and Quatre were nice guys, or looked like nice guys anyway. The Japanese boy had hardly talked with any of them, and Quatre’s invitation thrown on the first day had made him a bit uneasy. Who would invite two strangers in their home after sitting in a class for a few hours with them ?

Heero brushed the thoughts away and opened his laptop, intent on finishing this before the end of his lunch break. Dealing with relationships had never been his forte, but he trusted Wufei’s instincts. If the Chinese boy thought those guys were okay, he was probably right. Now he only had to survive the week, get this stupid study session over with, and most of all finish his essay.

But the gods had decided otherwise. No sooner had he begun typing that he heard footsteps in the corridor. He looked up, and saw two second-years wearing football jackets who were apparently making their way to the sports grounds and talking to each other. Dismissing them as unimportant, Heero turned back to his essay. Until the footsteps stopped right in front of him.

Heero did not look up. If the guys had business with him, they would talk, if not then he didn’t care.

“Hey. You’re one of the new guys, right ?”

Heero raised his gaze, nodded once, and turned once more to his History essay.

“Heero Yuy, right ?”

“Hn.”

“Peacecraft told us about ya. She seems to think you’re the hottest thing around.”

Heero shrugged, eyes still glued to his laptop screen and fingers typing away.

“Ya shouldn’t be hanging out with Winner and Maxwell, y’know ? They’re freaks ! Hey, I tell ya what, how about hangin’ out tonight ? We know some nice places …”

The voice trailed away, promising lots. Heero looked up again, eyebrows raised in question. What did those jerks think about, that he’d go out with them when he didn’t even know their names ? Apparently, the other one kind of read his mind.

“By the way, I’m Mueller. This is Alex. We’re on the football team”, he added stupidly.

“Hn.”

Alex frowned.

“Y’know, it’s not polite not to look at people when they’re talking to you !”

Heero abandoned his typing and looked up again, eyes blazingly cold.

“Do you guys actually have a point trying to talk to me ?”, he finally asked. “’Cause I’m trying to work here, and you’re wasting my time. And my space”, he added, shifting against the wall.

They were far too close and closing on him, giving him the uneasy sensation of being pinned against the wall. Actually, if they did not back off in the next minutes, Heero was quite sure he would start having a panic attack due to claustrophobia. And his panic attacks usually did not end well for the people who provoked them.

“Who do you think you are ?”, Mueller snapped. “You’re just a rookie here, so don’t take it that way with us ! You’d better learn soon who’s worth having as a friend and who’s not !”

Heero looked at the two of them pointedly and shrugged, going back to his essay. This infuriated Alex, who tried to take the laptop away from the Japanese boy. Only to have his wrist caught in an iron grip before he reached his target.

“You. Never. Touch. My. Laptop.”, Heero said in a low menacing voice. “Never. And if you hold your life dear, you never ever talk to me like that again.”

Mueller smirked.

“Oh, c’mon, Yuy, you think you actually scare us ? And now that you mention it, it’s a nice machine you got there. I wouldn’t mind … borrowing it, if you know what I mean ?”

This time, Heero had enough. He pushed Alex back, closed his laptop and started to stand up, intent on going away. He had sort of promised to Odin that he would not get into trouble, but damn it, it just looked like trouble was actually looking for him.

“Where do you think you’re going, Yuy ?”, Mueller called, and he blocked the way. “We’re not finished.”

“I am. Get out of my way.”

“Whohoo, what do they teach the first-years those days, Mueller ?”, Alex laughed. “Never heard of respecting your elders, Yuy ?”

“I respect the people who deserve it.”

“Ooh, my, I think we’ve just been insulted, Alex. What do you think ?”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right, Mueller.”

“What should we do about it ?”

“Well, you know what they say. If they won’t listen willingly, you gotta teach it by showing.”

“Then we should show Mr Yuy, right ?”

“I think we should.”

Heero rolled his eyes as the two thugs went through what looked like a rehearsed intimidation routine. That wouldn’t have scared a kindergarten kid. They were ridiculous.

The Japanese boy dodged the first punch easily, throwing Alex off balance. The older teen stumbled and almost fell flat out on his face. Angered by his partner’s demise, Mueller tried to catch Heero’s arms, and failed, when his hand closed on air. But then, they were two and Heero was alone and handicapped by the fact that he was carrying his laptop. And as he was trying not to get into the fight, he soon found himself trapped in a corner between a wall and a row of lockers.

Alex and Mueller smiled to each other. Now the little prick was gonna learn that when you were clever, you licked the boots of the football team or stood out of their way in the least. They were about to throw the first punch, when a new voice interrupted them.

“What do you think you’re doing ?”

Alex and Mueller turned around, and Heero looked past them to discover Duo, hands on his hips.

“Fuck off, Maxwell ! When we need sissies around, we’ll call ya !”

“Look who ya’re callin’ a sissy, Mueller. You’re two against one here, bud !”, Duo smirked.

“So what ? Wanna get beaten to ?”, Alex snapped.

His hand snaked out and caught the long swinging braid. Using it as a leash, Alex sent Duo crashing in the wall, the smaller boy yelping in pain.

“Let go”, Duo growled, trying to take his hair back, but Alex was taller than him and stronger, and kept him against the wall without effort.

“Leave him out of this”, Heero said.

“Why ?”, Mueller sneered. “Gonna defend the little fag, Yuy ? Or maybe you’re one too, right? You’re a little fag too !”

“Takes one to know one”, Heero bit right back.

“What ?”

“You deaf now ?”, Duo joked, not fazed by the fact that he was pinned against a wall and in no position to make threats. “Didn’t know you swung that way, man ! I shoulda known, though, it’s not like you got any girlfriends around …”

“Shut the fuck up !”, Alex snarled. “Mueller, why don’t you take care of Mr Yuy while I teach Maxwell how to stay silent ?”

“No problem man.”

Mueller took a step back, and prepared to deliver a punch right in Heero’s midsection. The Japanese boy braced himself for the impact.

‘Sorry, onii-san (1). I really tried, I swear. It’s not my fault, I didn’t start it.’

Just before the fist collided with his guts, Heero caught it in his right hand, blocking the elbow with his other hand. Using one of the few techniques he had learnt from one of his martial arts teacher, he managed to reverse the force of the blow, sending all the energy Mueller had put into the punch back into his arm. The bone didn’t stand the pressure and broke with a dry pop. Mueller fell to the floor with a strangled scream of pain. Alex and Duo stood paralyzed, gaping at Heero.

“What did you do ?”, Alex snapped, not relaxing his hold on Duo.

The braided boy was squirming against the wall in an attempt to escape his attacker and was slammed down quite forcefully for his efforts.

“Stop moving, you long-haired freak !!”

“Who are you calling a long-haired freak ?”, a very cold voice asked from behind.

Alex turned around very slowly and found himself face to face with Milliardo Peacecraft. A very calm, very collected Milliardo Peacecraft. The tall senior was eyeing the scene, his arms crossed on his chest.

“Hey, Milliardo, fancy seeing you here”, Alex said in a suddenly very subdued voice.

“Really ? Mind explaining why Mueller had Yuy pinned against the lockers and why you’re strangling Maxwell, then ?”

“Come on, Mil, just having a bit of fun with the first-years, you know how it is …”

“No, I don’t know how it is”, Milliardo interrupted. “What I saw was the two of you attacking Yuy, and then Maxwell when he tried to stop you. Let go of him, now.”

Alex did and went to help Mueller get up. Milliardo frowned when he saw Mueller cradling his arm and whimpering.

“What’s wrong with him ?”

“I broke his arm”, Heero said quietly.

Ice-blue eyes widened.

“You what ?”

“I broke his arm”, Heero repeated. “He tried to punch me”, he added as an explanation.

“I see”, Milliardo said, not seeing anything at all. “Well, better get to see Dr Winner, then, Mueller. But don’t think I’ll let it slide like this. I’ll have to report you. All three of you.”

Alex and Mueller tried to protest, but Heero just nodded. And there went staying out of trouble. Odin was going to be mad. Milliardo led the two second-years to the infirmary, leaving Duo and Heero standing in the corridor. Heero went to pick up his laptop.

“Man, those two are really thick, don’t mind them”, Duo said. “Just because they’re on the football team, they think everyone should lick their ass. They’re more trouble than they’re worth. You okay ?”

“Hn”, Heero grunted.

He was starting to get a headache. All he wanted now was to find a quiet place to finish that cursed essay and wait for Odin to tell him how disappointed he was. And he really didn’t want anyone pestering him. After all, he was not the one who had just been thrown into a wall.

“You sure ?”, Duo kept on, unaware of what was going on in Heero’s mind. “I mean, we could stop by the infirmary. Iria’s nice, she’s Quatre’s sister, y’know, she could just check you out and …”

“Shut up.”

The words had escaped Heero before he could stop them. Yes, he wanted Duo to shut up, but that was a bit harsh. And Duo did not take it well.

“So what ? That’s all the thanks I get for saving your ass ? Well that’s nice !”

“I didn’t need any help. And you got hurt stepping in the way.”

Heero did not see Duo’s hand move, and that in itself, he thought afterwards, was strange. But Duo slapped him so hard that his head jerked back.

“Nice to see you care !”, Duo snarled. “Just get yourself beaten to death next time and see if I care ! You’re a jerk, Yuy !”

And the braided boy stalked away. Heero was left to stare incredulously after him, blue eyes wide and hand clutching his burning cheek. A low chuckle interrupted his trance. Turning around, Heero found Wufei, Quatre, Trowa and Hilde behind him. Wufei was fighting a laugh, Quatre and Trowa were staring after Duo and Hilde was openly scowling at him.

“I don’t really know what happened, but you deserved that one alright, Heero”, Wufei said.

“We saw everything from over there, but we couldn’t come fast enough”, Quatre added. “You okay, Heero ?”

“Hn”, Heero answered, and now the blush on his cheeks was not due to the slap only.

“Why did you do that ?”, Hilde asked angrily. “He was just being nice to you ! You really are an asshole. I’ll get him and …”

“I’ll get him”, Quatre interrupted hastily, pushing Hilde out of the way and following the path Duo had taken to get out.

“But ..”, Hilde started to protest.

“Isn’t Relena waiting for you, Hil ?” Trowa asked innocently. “I thought you gals were supposed to work on that art project together.”

Hilde left with a grumble. Heero fumbled with his laptop, putting the machine back in its case, and not daring to look up at Trowa. That’s why he started when the green-eyed teenager actually gave him a hand with the laptop.

“Don’t worry”, Trowa said. “Quatre will calm him down.”

“I shouldn’t have said that anyway”, Heero said pointedly.

“No, you shouldn’t have”, Trowa agreed. “That was downright mean, in fact.”

Heero bowed his head in shame.

“I should apologize.”

“Yeah, I think you should”, Trowa acquiesced.

“Thanks for agreeing with me”, Heero sneered ironically.

“Any time”, Trowa answered deadpan. “What are friends for, after all ?”

Heero almost dropped the laptop in shock. Trowa caught it, finished putting it securely back in its case and handed it back to Heero.

“I know Duo is a bit strange for people like you, Heero”, he said quietly. “I had a hard time with him at the beginning too, especially since he was my boyfriend’s best friend, and kinda had the hots for him at a time. But he’s a good person, and he wouldn’t have done that for a lot of people. He really likes you, you know ? So you better make it alright.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he does”, Wufei said. “Heero’s just … that kind of situations makes him nervous. It would have made me nervous too.”

“Cat knows how to take him, and if you apologize, he’ll probably be okay with it”, Trowa kept on. “Oh, and .. thanks for beating those two up, by the way. Maybe they’ll stop acting like they actually own the school.”

And Trowa left them alone. Heero looked at his laptop, then at the place where Duo and Quatre had disappeared, then at the corridor where Trowa had gone, then at Wufei. His Chinese friend was quietly smiling while tucking an ebony lock back behind his ear.

“This school is something else, isn’t it ?”

“Aa. I … Odin is gonna be so mad.”

“Well, it’s not like it’s the first time, is it ?”

“Duo, wait up !”

“Leave me alone, Cat !”

“No.”

That simple world was spoken on that tone of self-confidence Quatre always had about him. Duo instantly gave up trying to escape his best friend and dropped gracelessly on the grass. If Quatre had made up his mind to talk to him, he would find a way to do it, so it w as better to get it over with.

Quatre sat on the grass next to Duo. His face expressed concern and … barely repressed amusement, Duo noticed. He almost grimaced. What was so funny in getting beaten by Alex and Mueller and then flatly told by Yuy that he was more a nuisance than anything else ?

“What happened exactly ?”, Quatre asked.

“He’s a jerk !”

“I know, that’s not what I asked.”

Duo sighed explosively.

“Oh, I’m just nice enough to get beaten defending his sorry ass, and even bothering to worry about the fact he could not be alright and what do I get ? ‘Shut up!’, that’s what he said, and just flat out told me I was in his way ! Why do I even bother ?”

The last sentence was punctuated by hands dramatically thrown in the air. Quatre chuckled, earning a reproving glance.

“What’s so funny ?”, Duo hissed.

“Oh, come on, Duo, look at you ! You wouldn’t be half as pissed if you didn’t like him !”

Duo turned the color of a ripe tomato.

“I … I don’t …”, he sputtered.

“ ‘Drooling material’, Duo, and I’m quoting, and agree wholeheartedly. And you don’t lie.”

Duo frowned.

“Okay ! Fine ! I like him ! And he’s a jerk ! Like it’s not difficult enough to like boys here, turns out the one that interests me is the greatest asshole of the universe !”

Quatre sighed, shaking his head.

“I’ll give that to you, what he did and said was not nice, but … you’re not all white either, Duo?”

“What ? What did I do ?”, Duo asked with wide eyes.

“You’re crowding him.”

“I so am not !”, Duo retorted indignatly.

“No, by your standards, you’re not, but …”

Quatre ruffled through his light blond bangs, looking for his words.

“Did you try to see things from his point of view, Duo ? He’s new here, coming from another country where things like shaking hands can engage your honor. He’s trying to adapt to a new lifestyle and a new culture. He’s a bit lost, with only one friend to rely on to. And you can be a bit overwhelming.”

“But … I’m not that bad, am I ?”

“Don’t worry, at that game, Relena wins. I know you do your best not to be all over him, Duo, and I really admire you for that, ‘cause I never thought I’d see the day you would actually do that. But it’s still too much. He needs space. You make him uncomfortable.”

“He’s not uncomfortable with Wu.”

“They’ve been knowing each other for as long as I’ve been knowing you, it’s normal, Duo. From what Odin told Solo, they almost grew up together, they must have some kind of special bond.”

Quatre abruptly stopped talking, and frowned.

“Why did you never tell me ?”, he suddenly asked.

“Tell you what ?”

“Your feelings about me. Why did you never tell me ?”

Duo’s cheeks reddened again.

“I … well, I wasn’t sure of how you would react, Q. I mean, you’re like the first real friend I ever had, and I didn’t wanna risk losing that just for a crush. It wasn’t worth it.”

“You know, I blamed myself endlessly when I found out. I thought I had been a bad friend, or I would have noticed something”, Quatre said pensively. “When was the last time we talked, Duo ?”

Duo blinked.

“We’re talking right now”, he said.

“No, I mean … when was the last time we had a real one on one talk, like we used to back then in grade school ? When we used to tell each other everything.”

Duo blinked again, and Quatre laughed softly.

“I’ve not been a very good friend for you lately, Duo. I was just so happy to have found Trowa, I let you down.”

“No ! Of course not ! Why would you think that, Cat ? You didn’t let me down ! And you and Tro deserve some time on your own …”

“Yes, but the fact remains I wasn’t there for you. I … call me tonight, okay ? And we’ll talk. Just you and me, like we used to. And I’ll even let you rant about Heero and what a jerk he is.”

Duo smiled.

“Thanks, Cat. You’re a real friend, you know that ?”

“I try”, Quatre answered modestly. “Duo, about Heero …”

“What about him ?”, Duo snapped.

“This. Could you please not snap at him too much ? He feels pretty bad about what he said, and I’m sure he wants nothing more than apologizing right now. So … take it easy, okay ? I’m not saying you’re not right to be angry with him, I’m saying … give him a chance and don’t ruin it because of pride, okay ?”

“Okay”, Duo grumbled. “But now that you mention it, what is there to ruin ? He’s not really my friend, and even if this turns out fine, how much do you wanna bet he’s straight ?”

“Duo, why do you always assume the worst ?”

“Why do you always assume the best ?”

“Your point being ?”

Both friends began laughing. Until Duo winced. The bruise on his face was starting to get purple, and he was holding his left shoulder a bit stiff.

“Duo, you should let Iria see this. You were bumped in the wall pretty badly, and that bruise doesn’t look too great.”

“No way I’m going near the infirmary, those two morons will still be there.”

“By the way, what did Heero do to Mueller ? I couldn’t see very well, but …”

“You want gory details, now Cat ? What will Trowa say ?”, Duo teased. But then he became serious again. “I don’t know what he did, but he said he had broken his arm.”

“Oh” was all Quatre found to reply to that. But he was in full mother hen mode again when Duo winced once more.

“Duo, you must …”

“No, Cat, it’s okay. I’ve had worse. I’ll just head home and let aunt Helen put something on it if she wants. I … I don’t wanna stay here.”

“Alright, but you’re not going home alone”, Quatre said firmly. “I’ll go with you.”

“Hey, come on, I don’t wanna make you skip classes …”

“Oh, better idea”, Quatre interrupted when his gaze caught someone. “SOLO !”

“Oh, no, Cat, don’t …”

“Don’t what ?”, Solo asked, coming towards the two boys with Odin, before he noticed the state his brother was in. “Who did that to you ?” he asked in a clipped tone.

“Solo, it’s okay, it doesn’t even really hurt, and Heero took care of them.”

“Them ?”

“Alex and Mueller.”

Odin sighed.

“How bad are they exactly ?”, he asked in a resigned tone.

Quatre looked up at the tall teenager suspiciously.

“You knew ?”

“About Heero being in a fight ? No. About him being the last one to stand up ? Yes.”

“Mueller’s got a broken arm, and Alex is fine”, Duo cut in.

“Not for long”, Solo said. “If I ever catch him alone …”

“Solo, stop !”, Duo said, horribly embarrassed. “I’m not in grade school anymore and I can stand my own ! I don’t need you to do the big bro act anymore, got it ?”

Solo ruffled through Duo’s bangs and smiled.

“I know, but I still have a right to worry, okay ? You’re my baby brother, after all.”

“Am not !”, Duo said indignantly.

“Are too !”

“Uh, Solo ? Duo wants to go home, and I think it would be best if …”, Quatre started.

“I’ll go with him”, Solo said before he could finish. “I’ll skip fifth period, no biggie.”

“You don’t have to …”, Duo protested.

“I want to. I’m not letting you walk home alone like that. Now c’mon, let’s go and put something on those ugly bruises, and then you can tell me what’s wrong.”

Duo crossed his arms stubbornly, a bit miffed that his brother had actually noticed something was wrong.

“Nothing’s wrong.”

“Yeah, right”, Solo smirked. “And I’m dating Milliardo. Come on, cricket. Odin, I’ll catch you later !!!”

“Bye ! Take care of him !”, Odin answered, before turning to Quatre.

“Where’s Heero ?”

“I left him with Trowa and Wufei, but I guess he was called to Mrs. Une’s office. Milliardo was here, and he must have reported the fight. Does it happen often to Heero ?”

“Unfortunately, yes”, Odin sighed. “He never throws the first punch, but somehow there’s always someone who doesn’t like him and wants to take him out. And usually, Heero doesn’t start fights, but he always finishes them. I’ll go find him.”

[Principal Une’s Office]

“You broke the arm of one of our school champions, Mr. Yuy. Thanks to you, Mr. Mueller won’t be able to play for the rest of the year. What do you have to say for your defense ?”

Une glared at the young man in front of her. If she was honest with herself, Mueller was no big loss, but she was supposed to apply the rules. And actually, her glare did not seem to impress Heero. He was looking at her, Prussian blue eyes carefully neutral and face expressing nothing. He let the silence stretch for a while before he spoke in a low voice, barely above a murmur.

“I didn’t start it, Ma’am.”

And nothing else. He didn’t even try to deny that he had indeed broken a classmate’s arm. Une sighed.

“I know, Mr. Yuy. Mr. Peacecraft was quite adamant on the fact that you were indeed attacked and only reacted to defend yourself and Mr. Maxwell. That’s why I only give you detention. I’m afraid your parents will have to be warned also.”

No visible reaction. Heero just shifted his weight a bit, before he asked a question.

“What about them ?”

“Oh, they will be punished too, Mr. Yuy, but that is none of your concern. Go back to your classes now, you will be notified the terms of your detention later.”

‘When I can figure them out, that is’ Une added in her head.

Heero got out of the principal’s office to find his brother waiting for him. Alex and Mueller were there also, both grim and glaring daggers at him. They stood up to get in the office to receive their punishment, but Alex stopped in front of Heero.

“Next time I catch you, Yuy”, he spat, “there won’t be a senior to save your ass.”

This didn’t quite have the expected effect. Heero grinned. Which in itself was something terrifying. He pierced Alex’s eyes with his own.

“Good. Then next time, I’ll actually get around to kick your ass properly”, he said very low.

Odin rolled his eyes.

“C’mon, Heero, let’s go.”

Heero followed his big brother outside, remaining silent as he did so.

“So …”, Odin started, stopping in a shaded alley. “What happened ?”

Heero shrugged, looking away.

“Come on, Heero. If I want details, you know I can ask anyone, Milliardo, or Quatre, or Trowa, so why don’t you just tell me.”

“They attacked me, and Duo, and I just defended myself, that’s all.”

“And you had to break someone’s arm to do it ?”, Odin asked pointedly.

“He had me cornered against the lockers, I couldn’t evade the punch”, Heero answered angrily.

“Hey hey, calm down, I’m just asking. Just to be sure you didn’t overreact a bit.”

Heero did calm down almost immediately.

“They’re gonna warn the parents, aren’t they ?”, Odin asked.

Heero nodded.

“It’s not that bad, Heero”, Odin tried to say consolingly. “You know your mom will understand, and Dad, well … Dad’ll just have to get over it. You didn’t start it and you defended a classmate. That should do the trick.”

“Hn.”

Odin gently traced the outline of the red mark on his little brother’s face.

“And who did that to you ?”

“Duo.”

Odin raised both eyebrows. Well, that was a story he’d have to pry from Heero with a crowbar. Probably safer to ask for it from another willing source.

“He’s got weird ways to say thank you.”

“No, I got weird ways to say thank you”, Heero grumbled.

“Peacecraft !”

Relena looked up from her notebook to see who was calling her in a such an offensive manner. She wasn’t surprised to see Hilde barreling to her, a furious scowl on her face. Relena shot a quizzical look to Dorothy. The tall blond-haired girl shook her head to show she didn’t know what this was about, and settled down to watch the show.

Hilde stopped in front of Relena’s table, hands on her hips and glaring furiously at the self-appointed queen of the school.

“What’s wrong with you, Schbeicker ?”, Relena hissed. “Don’t call me that in front of everyone. I have a reputation to maintain, unlike you.”

“Yeah right”, Hilde sneered. “Your Heero guy is the greatest jerk of the known universe and beyond !”

“What ?! How dare you …”

“Duo went to help him when he was being forced in a corner by those two thugs, and Heero just shoved him away and never even said thanks !”

“Heero would never do that !”, Relena protested. “He’s too nice and polite for that !”

“How would you know ?”, Hilde shot right back. “He doesn’t even talk to you !”

“Well, that’s just because he’s shy ! And Duo doesn’t talk to you either !”

“He does ! He’s just not ready to ask me out, that’s all !”

“Not ready !! Not a chance in hell he’ll be ready one day, Schbeicker, he likes guys !”

“That’s not true ! He just didn’t find a nice enough girl to show him what it’s really like !”

“Oh, and who’s going to show him ? You and all that girly charm you have about you ? You look like a truck driver !”

“Well, you look like a bunch of pink cotton candy !”

Relena let out an indignant yelp.

“How can you …”

She was interrupted by Dorothy’s crystalline laugh. The girl was watching the developing bickering with great amusement, until she couldn’t hold it back any longer.

“Look at you girls ! And you’re not even actually dating the guys ! That’s so pathetic !”

Both girls turned a brilliant shade of red between embarrassment and anger.

“Oh Dorothy, that’s not nice !”, Relena whined.

“Yeah, we could totally be dating them”, Hilde added.

“So it’s a wonder why you’re not”, Dorothy smirked. “How could that really be if they’re as smitten with you as you think ?”

“Uh …”

“Well …”

“And it’s not like they would actually even think of asking you to the Spring Dance”, Dorothy kept on.

“He will !”, both girls shouted in unison.

They looked at each other with evident disgust.

“Heero will ask me to the Dance, I know it”, Relena said fervently.

“ How ? By ignoring you ?”, Hilde joked. “At least, Duo talks to me.”

“Yes, but he’s gay”, Dorothy supplied helpfully.

And with that last word, Dorothy left the two bickering girls alone. It was fun to watch, but only for a while. Spotting Meiran not far from here, Dorothy went to her. The Chinese girl actually had a brain, and she disliked Dorothy with all her might, but they were both too clever not to recognize someone with equal skill in word sparring. Meiran was far more interesting than the airheads like Relena or Hilde. And Dorothy was dying to find out what the link between Meiran and the new Chinese guy Wufei was.

She sat beside the girl without asking permission. Meiran looked up from her book, saw her, shot a look to Relena and Hilde, and then flashed a knowing grin to her old enemy.

“They’re not tired yet ?”

“No, and if I managed to do things correctly, they’ll be arguing into next week. Where do you know Wufei from?”, Dorothy added in the same breath.

Meiran gaped at her, but regained composure quite quickly, even she held herself a bit stiffly.

“You know him from before, that’s obvious”, Dorothy kept on. “Come on, tell me !”

“Why should I ?”, Meiran snarled.

“Because I’m asking nicely and not torturing you for the info ?”

“As if I would give it to you anyway !”

“Probably not, but I would have a good time. Where do you know Wufei from ?”

Meiran sighed and closed her book.

“He’s my cousin (2). Satisfied ?”

“Far from it. You were at the same school ?”

“Same house, same kindergarten, same grade school, and same goddamn martial arts school, okay ?”

“Why do you hate him ?”

“Because he was always the Clan’s shining example, that’s why ! ‘Meiran, why don’t you do as Wufei does ?’, ‘Meiran, why can’t you study like Wufei ?’, and ‘Meiran, why can’t you be a nice child like Wufei ?’! I’m fed up with Wufei, thank you very much ! I thought I was rid of him for good when my parents finally left Canton to come here, but noooo, his parents had to move to the US too, and of all the freakin’ places they could have chosen in this forsaken country that’s just too big, they had to come here ! Got everything you wanted now ?”

And the Chinese stormed away, fuming, and forgetting her book behind.

(1) One of the numerous ways to say ‘big brother’ in Japanese.
(2) I know, I put 5+M as a pairing, so let me explain. The notion of family in China is not exactly the same as in other parts of the world. Even if they’re very distantly related, Meiran and Wufei would have known each other closely. My starting point here is that they are part of the same clan, but that, for example, Wufei’s great grandfather was Meiran’s great grandfather’s cousin. With this, Wufei and Meiran are very distant cousins, but so distant that a relationship between them is not considered incestuous. So there.
