people in their lives will fit into this strange picture, and if,
somehow, they can all become a family.
Can't Have It All Chapter 6 Relena had expected a note like any other from Duo. She expected him to say where he was going and when hed be back, as was his custom. What she didnt expect was the letter she found. Dear Relena, Heero and I have discussed this in detail, and we want to ask a favor of you. You know that we both love Aiko and Kyoko very much, and that we have always been there for you and for them. What wed like is to formalize the arrangement we currently have. Simply put, we want to be their fathers. You dont have to answer right away. Take some time and think it over. Were willing to wait, but Relena, you know those girls need a father, and what we are offering is two. Please, let us know your thoughts on this soon. Sincerely, Duo Maxwell Relena felt her fist crumple the paper into a ball. Think about it? He wanted her to FUCKING THINK ABOUT IT? For the first time, ever, Relena Darlian Peacecraft knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was being selfish, and didnt care in the least. Duo and Heero were talking with Quatre on his back deck, waiting for Trowa to come back with some drinks. They thought it best to give Relena some quiet time to think about their offer to adopt the twins. That was why they were very surprised when, no sooner did Trowa appear in the door way, than an enraged Relena Peacecraft marched straight up to a wide-eyed Duo Maxwell and decked him hard enough to knock him to the ground. You stupid fucking selfish bastard! You stay the hell away from my babies; do you hear me, Maxwell? Duo looked at Relena, his hand going to his jaw, too stunned to be angry. Relena, what- You just dont fucking get it, do you? she interrupted, It was okay that my personal life was shit and I was going to be a single mother working a demanding job for the rest of my life and that you got Heero instead of me, because I had them. They were MINE. I gave them everything and never expected anything or even said a damn word to anybody. In the seven months you knew I was pregnant, you didnt say a thing. On the day they were born, you held them in your arms and didnt say a damn word, you son of a bitch. And now, when MY little girls are eighteen months old, you suddenly decide you want to be their father? And hide behind Heero to do it? Thats damn low, Duo Maxwell. Youre not a father, youre a sperm donor. She turned to Heero, taking a deep, calming breath. I dont blame you, Heero. As far as I know, you didnt know anything about it. Youve been a good friend to me, and a damn good father-figure to those girls. Im so sorry about all of this. Of course, replied Heero automatically, still reeling from this news. Relena and Duo? Why couldnt you just be content like you were? Relena demanded of Duo. You were with them all the time, watching them grow up, being a part of their lives. But no, you want them, too, along with everything else. Well, news flash, asshole. You cant have it all! With that, she collapsed into sobs on a deck chair. Quatre and Trowa looked at each other in astonishment, and then moved to comfort her. Heero looked from the crying woman to his lover, and then went to the kitchen to make Relena some hot tea. Duo was glued to the ground, gaping and not sure what to say. He had obviously not thought of his request in that way before, and his mind was battling between defending his good intentions and disgust with himself over what had actually transpired. While Relena cried against Quatres shoulder, he raised his head to look at Duo, an emotion in his eyes that had Trowa, for one, had never seen before. I have to say, Duo, that Im with Relena on this one. There were other options besides just not saying anything. It was obvious Heero didnt even know. You could have at least had the decency to tell him. Duo wanted to protest, to say that he was young and scared and unprepared. But no sooner did he think it than he was forced to see that Relena was all of those things, too, but she had done beautifully. She had raised those girls, *their* girls, fearless and determined and never too busy for them. Suddenly he felt like a first class jackass. Oh, God, Relena, Im so sorry, he whispered, standing on unsteady feet. Thats a very, very small step in the right direction. Then again, it might be too little, too late. Tea? Heero asked in a neutral tone. Duo sank back to the ground with a moan. Oh, Ive really fucked up this time, havent I? It made so much sense at the time, but now I think what we all need is some time to think. You left the girls with a babysitter? Heero asked Relena. At her nod, he said, Ill drive you home and get some things for myself and Duo. Quatre, do you have a couple of rooms to spare? Duo flinched at the comment couple of rooms but knew it wasnt more than he deserved. Of course you can stay, Quatre said quietly, his face still showing his displeasure. Duo sighed inwardly. Another relationship he would have to fix, if he could. God, but he hoped he could. His mind was scrambling, hoping, wondering what it would take to undo what he had done, if the damage was irreparable. Heero drove Relena home in near silence, wondering what he could possibly say. What finally came out, as they pulled into the driveway was, Am I a complete fool? He never cheated on you, if thats what you mean. Im angry at Duo right now, but I wont try to break you up by telling lies. It was one time, more than a month before you got together, and it had absolutely nothing to do with love, or caring, or even lust, for that matter. But all this time, Heero shook his head, youve both been right there under my nose, and I didnt see it, There was very little to see. Today is the first
time since it happened, more than two years ago, that either of us
has recognized that night. There is absolutely nothing between us.
Ive come to love Duo over the past year or so, but as a friend,
a brother. Thats the most there is or ever will be to it. Come
inside and get your things, but dont leave until you come to
my room. I have something to give you, for Duo. ~ * ~ |
