Can't Have It All

Chapter 13

Trowa arrived home to find his house in an uproar. He opened the door just in time to see Duo literally climbing the banisters of the stairway, monkey-like. When he reached the top, he disappeared, and soon various articles of clothing began to rain down on Trowa. A sock, a pair of pants, a t-shirt, all fell to the ground. The second shirt, however, landed on his head.

He pulled it off just in time to catch Quatre smiling. Another sock and some underwear fell from above.

“What’s going on?” Trowa asked.

The blonde quickly sobered, and drank some of the tea he was holding before answering. “I don’t know. Heero called a few minutes ago and demanded to speak to Duo. I didn’t hear what he said, but Duo’s been going ape-shit, if you’ll pardon the expression, ever since. I can’t even get him to talk to me.”

Duo appeared at the top of the stairs and looked down at them. “Oh, Trowa, you’re here. Good. Won’t you both come upstairs? I need to speak with you.”

Trowa paled at bit. He wasn’t sure he had ever heard Duo speak so carefully. There was a tight controlled tone in his voice, like he had to say something, but it was very difficult to speak. His words were precise, harshly perfect, and when he had said them, he turned and walked away.

They exchanged a worried glance and hurried up the stairs, just in time for Duo to emerge from his room, arms full of the rest of his clothes, and throw them over the rail to join the rest. For a moment, he simply breathed, slowly and deeply.

“I wanted to thank you both for your hospitality. It was very kind of you to let me stay, but I’ll be leaving now,” he said, his back to them. He turned to face them, and they suddenly understood his tone. He had been trying to hide that fact that he was quietly crying, moisture brimming in his eyes and spilling over. He gave them a heart-breakingly beautiful smile through his tears. “I’m going home.”

Duo debated knocking, then just used his key. He was coming home, damn it, not visiting. Heero was standing at the bottom of the stairs when the door opened. He didn’t pretend he was doing anything else, just locked his eyes on Duo’s face as soon as he came in.

For a moment, there was an awkward silence as they just stared at each other. Duo, for one irrational moment, feared they would just remain, frozen like that, forever. Then Heero was kissing him, and his hands where touching his face, and, oh, God, he’d forgotten how good this was, how wonderful his lover smelled and tasted.

He heard his bag hit the floor, and guessed he must have dropped it. His arms came up around Heero’s waist, and he clung to his lover like he would be torn away forcibly if he let go.

“I’ve missed you,” Heero said against his lips. “I love you. Duo, I’m sorry. I’ve been an ass.”

“I made my share of mistakes, too, love,” Duo murmured, really wishing that he could crawl into Heero’s skin with him, so he would never have to be away again.

“This is the part where we prove that we’ve forgiven and love each other by making love all night and then calling in sick to work tomorrow, right?” Heero asked, joy and hope and need all coloring his tone.

“We should probably take this slow, build trust again, let the wounds heal - but, God, Heero, can we pretend we’ve done all of that already? Can you just be making love to me? I need to feel you to know that I really have you again. Instead of starting over, can we start from the place where you love me, and I love you, and that’s all that matters?”

“That’s a good place,” Heero agreed. His fingers slid down Duo’s neck to pull at the buttons of his shirt. “It’s good to have you home.”

“It’s good to be home. Heero, I don’t think I’m going to let you out of bed for a week.” To Duo’s ears, he sounded as needy as he felt, but Heero didn’t seem bothered by it.

“Duo, what makes you think we’re going to make it to a bed?” was his only reply.

Relena snuggled against Wufei’s chest, smiling up at him when she felt his gaze. Neither of them was really watching the movie. It was something colorful and inane put on for the benefit of the children. Now that the girls were asleep, it was simply too much trouble to pry themselves away from each other long enough to turn it off.

She put her arm around his waist, tucking it between his body and the arm of the couch. There were so many things her heart told her that needed to be said, and the time was at hand.

“I don’t know how to say what I want to say, so please, just hear me out before you respond. It’s time, Wufei. It’s time to talk to Duo, to let him see the girls. I’ve done a lot of thinking in these past few weeks, and I know now that he wasn’t the only one at fault. There are a lot of things that we need to settle.”

She paused to collect her thoughts, and her courage, and then said, “But first, I want to know what we are going to do about us. I have to know if you want to continue to be a part of our lives.”

Wufei gently kissed her, the same touch of lips that he hadn’t yet dared move beyond. “I love your children. Even just for them, I would say that I do. But I love their mother, too. There is something between us, Relena, that I want, even though I don’t know what it is yet.”

“Kiss me?” was her only reply. She closed her eyes and offered her mouth, feeling weak when his palm caressed her jaw as he took her up on that offer.

With a firmness she hadn’t expected, their lips met, but this time he wasn’t content to let it go at that. His arm tightened around her, and he coaxed her mouth open, pulling her bottom lip into his mouth before sending his tongue on a journey of exploration. With one hand she held his arm, vaguely registering it’s solidity beneath her fingers. Her other was still at his waist, holding him tightly. Heat passed between them, and when the devastating kiss was over, Relena clung to Wufei like he was her rock. How had he become that so quickly?

“I’ll call Duo tomorrow,” Wufei promised, running a hand up and down her arm.

“What will you tell him?” she queried, feeling a bit apprehensive.

“That I found you,” he replied, still using his touch to reassure her. “And maybe, what’s that expression? ‘Finders, keepers?’ ”
