Relena's lifetime commitment to the children who came of it, but when
their father's identity comes out, it's hard to see where other important
people in their lives will fit into this strange picture, and if,
somehow, they can all become a family.
Can't Have It All Chapter 1 Eight weeks after her late-night visit, Relena made her announcement to the world without a looking at where Heero Yuy stood, arm wrapped about Duo Maxwell. She had gotten good at that, focusing on what was really important and ignoring the rest. Of course, shed always been good at ignoring things; it was just that the truth was no longer one of those things. So, she took a deep breath and announced that she was expecting twins, and when questioned, replied that she certainly would *not* terminate the pregnancy, and that she *would* be raising the children on her own. Never had Relena had such a handle on life. She walked a clear path, now, and she never once looked back. Despite aggressive investigative reporting, nobody seemed to be able to say for sure who had fathered Relenas twins. As for the girl herself, not a word could be conned, coaxed, or bribed from her about the identity of the father. Many believed it to be Heero, and though he publicly denied it, neither he nor his lover seemed to be bothered by the persistent rumor, simply because they knew it was not true. In fact, despite the rumor, nobody was kinder to Relena during her pregnancy than the pair. They helped her with everything. They were her only friends. Neither of them said a word about the identity of her childrens father, something she felt was almost too good to be true. She almost laughed, thinking of a time when she would have been hurt that Heero didnt care enough to ask who she had slept with, but those days were far gone, and she knew it wasnt that he didnt care; it was simply that he respected her privacy. Others, however, did not seem to have his tact. Well, Miss Peacecraft, the obstetrician said, peeling off his gloves, those babies are as healthy as can be, and so are you. He hesitated, and she knew what was coming. Your career is going well, and youve managed to work it around your pregnancy very well. Are you *sure* you dont want to involve the father? Relena nodded. You cant have it all, Doctor. He knows Im pregnant, Im sure. After all, who doesnt? But he hasnt said anything to me about wanting to get involved. He has his own life, and I respect that. Are you saying you arent going to *inconvenience* him with responsibility for his *children*? the doctor asked. Isnt that a bit blasé, Miss Peacecraft? Not at all, Relena said, frowning at him. Im saying that I want my children to have a father who is around because he wants to be, or none at all. They deserve that. After getting in from the obstetrician, Relena decided she had never been so sick in her life. There was NOTHING in her stomach. She was stuck in front of the toilet, and had been for what seemed like hours now. Relena? Duos voice called. Are you still here? You had a meeting that started five minutes ago. In here, she called weakly. Duo stuck his head in, then seeing she was decent, entered the bathroom. You okay? he asked gently. Morning sickness. The very name is a cruel joke. It implies that is stops after the morning. My ass. Its two oclock in the afternoon, for pitys sake. She closed her eyes and set her mouth in a grim line as another wave of nausea crashed into her body. Duo wet a wash cloth and handed it to her. She put the cool cloth against the heat of her neck. It felt so good. She managed a smile. Thanks, Duo He grinned at her. No problem. If youre done here, we should probably get going. Heero was looking for you downstairs. She nodded. Theres nothing left to throw up, Duo shot out the bathroom door. Hey, Heero! I found Prego! Prego? Relena asked, raising an eyebrow as she pulled herself off the floor. Duos head again appeared in the doorway. Yeah, you know, like the spaghetti sauce. Prego: Its in there! Prego, as in pregnant, and it IS in there, you know? Relena shook her head. Duo, I really wonder about how that brain of yours works sometimes. Nothing wrong with my brain a little mechanic work wouldnt fix, Duo said cheerfully. Which reminds me, I have to take it in for a tune-up. Relena went down the stairs, Duo walking beside her lest she feel sick again. You are such a goof ball, she muttered, shooting him a glare when he snickered at the sound of the words goof ball coming out of the mouth of the prim Miss Relena Peacecraft. Heero, whack your boyfriend a few good times for me, will you? Hes making fun of me, again. Heero didnt seem surprised by this news in the least. One day, those hormones everyone talks about pregnant women having are going to come out in full force against you, Duo, and when they do, Im not going to do a thing to stop her. Relena gave a thoughtful, mischievous smile. Thats right, I can blame it on the hormones, cant I? Great, Heero, now youve all but given her permission to do something bad to me, Duo whined. Oh, just be quiet and you dont have a thing to worry about. Especially when Im running so late. It was only a few minutes later that Relena hurried into the conference room. So nice of you to join us, Miss Peacecraft, one man whispered loudly as she passed. Im terribly sorry. Ill be sure to schedule my morning sickness around any future obligations, she snapped back irritably. That, she decided, really was hormones. The subject was quickly dropped as the man seemed to
be uncomfortable and the women in the room looked at her sympathetically.
Such a nice girl, and to think she was going to be all alone raising
those twins. ~ * ~ |
